In an Age of Wonder
A thousand years of Skeksis rule has ravaged Thra, leaving it as harsh and twisted as the Skeksis themselves. The Emperor lies on his deathbed, a dying leader of a dying race. SkekSil the Chamberlain and skekUng the Garthim-Master argue in the throne room. Their stakes are the highest there can be, for the winner shall become an immortal emperor once he absorbs the power of the stars. The other shall be cast out into the very land they ruined.
A world away, Jen the Gelfling mourns. He mourns the sickness of his oldest friend, the wise elder of the Mystic village. Though the Mystics are peaceful, they cannot stop the ravages of time and they prepare for the passing of their leader. Jen is told of a prophecy, told that he is the only one alive who can stop the Skeksis from using the power of the stars to gain untold power. He is told that he must leave the Mystic village and find a shard of the Dark Crystal. He is told to make the world whole once more.
Jen and Kira are the last of the Gelflings. Kira's family was destroyed by the Skeksis and their Garthim. She has lived among the Podlings and animals of the jungle her entire life, knowing nothing of the Gelfling prophecy, a prophecy that the Skeksis are desparate to prevent.
In the dark castle of the Skeksis, steel hits stone and sparks fly forth. SkekSil strikes with conviction, skekUng strikes with rage. Ringing is heard throughout the Crystal Castle and the fate of Thra is decided.
The Gelflings and the Skeksis
The Dark Crystal takes place in the fantastic land of Thra and places players on two sides of a struggle for the fate of the world. 2-4 Players will pick sides, controlling either the Gelflings, Jen and Kira, or the Skeksis, skekSil and SkekUng. The Gelflings wish to fulfill the prophecy, healing the Dark Crystal in the Crystal Castle and making the land whole once more, while the Skeksis fight among themselves to see who will be the new emperor of an eternal empire.
Each character is represented by a beautiful miniature and has a unique character sheet which lists the dice rolled for specific skill tests and they each receive a unique special ability to use once during the game. Will the Gelflings succeed in their quest to find the Crystal Shard and heal the Dark Crystal, or will the Skeksis crown a new emperor and rule Thra for eternity?
The Gelflings
Jen and Kira make up the team of Gelflings, and they must make their way to Aughra's Observatory to find the Crystal Shard they'll need to heal the Dark Crystal. The challenges will be great as they travel through the land of Thra, fighting off the Garthim and the Skeksis who want to stop their quest at all costs. Luckily, the Gelflings have a safe haven in The Valley of the Stones, where they can recover their Will and gain the aid of the Mystics who live there. Find the Crystal Shard and make it through the dangers of the Crystal Castle. If you can accomplish this, the Gelflings will win the day!
The Skeksis
The Skeksis, skekSil and skekUng, hate each other and are constantly fighting to claim the title of emperor. However, they cannot sit idly by as the Gelflings attempt to bring their empire to an end. The Skeksis take control of their Garthim armies and send them out to hunt down the Gelflings, causing them to lose their Will to go on and ensuring a new Skeksis emperor is crowned. Other Skeksis will aid you for a time, and you can always count on your trusty minions to do your dirty work, leaving you time to focus on keeping the crown for yourself. If the Skeksis are able to keep the Gelflings from accomplishing their goals, the Skeksis who holds the crown will absorb the power of the stars and become an immortal emperor!
