More Top Cards from Adventures in the Forgotten Realms

Reddit

Hello my happy readers! I hope that your day is amazing and productive in equal measure! You are worth it, right? Right!

Today I want to look at another Top Ten slate of cards from the very unusual and deep set that was just released: D&D: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms. When your set title is longer than Ravnica: City of Guilds, you are doing it wrong. Today we'll look at the card that count down from #34 - #44 inclusive. For you math-inclined players, that's 11 cards, so we'll have an Honorable Mention as well.

I have 3 previous articles for this set, here they are!

  • The first week I gave you my Top Ten Cards (which you can find here). That list includes hitters like Oswald Fiddlebender and Demilich, but where? Check it out! We finished with ten cards and one honorable mention, so we had 11 cards in total.
  • In the second week I gave you my Top Ten cards from #12 - #22. That list includes fun cards like Ochre Jelly and Treasure Vault and a Vecna body part. We finish with a common taking the top spot. What hit where?
  • In the third week I gave you my Top Ten cards from #23-33 including Tiamat and The Book of Vile Darkness. Where did they wind up? You can see my list here.

In order to make my list these cards need to be good at casual table gaming. A great card for Standard like Werewolf Pack Leader that works wonders there may not always hit it out of the park in things like Commander, multiplayer, and other kitchen table formats.

Ready for my list? Let's check it out!

Honorable Mention - 44. The Deck of Many Things

The Deck of Many Things

Sometimes you just have a card that is so crazy and fun that it makes the cut in my article even if it's not powerful. And this thing is a lot of fun, right? Toss a d20! Do you have cards in your hand? Bad player! You reduce that many cards from your result! Is your result now a 0 or lower? You discard your hand you bad player! Otherwise check the chart - 1-9? Awesome you Regrowth a card at random. Roll another die to figure out what is coming back. Did you toss a 10-19? Great! Divination. Did you toss a 20? You are a Lizard Wizard! You can bring back a dead dork from a graveyard and when it dies that player loses the game. Fun for all!

43. Minsc, Beloved Ranger

Minsc, Beloved Ranger

I have already created an EDH deck around Minsc here. You can check it out for a deep dive into this 3-mana legend that's already leading 82 decks over at EDHREC.com. Pretty good for the gaming. Not only is Minsc good at Commander but his X to Giant-ify a creature is relevant to casual town as well. His X reminds me of Mirror Entity's that can pump up a team out of nowhere, but here, just one dork. Love it (and them) a lot!

42. The Blackstaff of Waterdeep

The Blackstaff of Waterdeep

Are you a fan of a one-drop artifact that can tap to animate your non-creature artifact into a 4/4 for as long as the Blackstaff is tapped? And you can skip untapping it during your untap step to keep it animated. Note that you cannot use it on itself. I enjoy that this is legendary as many recent cards with "The" in the title haven't been which is a big flavor foul. (Example? How about The Biblioplex? Or The World Tree?) I enjoy the flavor of this card a lot!

41. Boots of Speed

Boots of Speed

Our top-scoring common in today's list are the Boots of Speed. Compare them to Crystal Slipper, which was playable at the kitchen table already with a 2-drop and a 1-cst equip. These are better. They give haste and a +1/+0 boost for one mana to drop on the first turn and then just one to equip. They are aruguably better than Strider Harness that's a 3-drop for a +1/+1 and haste off one equip. The Boots are the best piece of common equipment of these type. Love them!

And now let's look at our Top 40!

40. Inferno of the Star Mounts

Inferno of the Star Mounts

Hello people who like casual formats and Dragons. This Shivan Dragon variant costs the same mana, pumps, has flying, but is +1/+1 in size, haste, and cannot be countered, and he's legendary so you can run him as a Commander. He's an alternate win con in 20-life formats as you want to pump him to 20 and then deal that amount of damage to your foe, but in Commander he won't auto-kill folks, thus his reduction on this list to #40. But I love this guy a lot and I won't be ashamed to see him at Standard or kitchen table play.

39. Drizzt Do'Urden

Drizzt Do'Urden

This powerful Elf Ranger is the most iconic character in the entire D&D property, as his books by R.A. Salvatore have been giant hits. They also introduced the cards Bruenor Battlehammer, Wulfgar of Icewind Dale and Catti-Brie of Mithral Hall. Drizzt is the dark elf ranger who turned his back on his evil people and fled the underdark to find his destiny. He's pretty brooding in his later works (although not in the first book) and he became a fantasy icon. And here is his card! As you can see, Drizzt costs 5 mana for a 3/3 with double strike, which is already good for the cause. The double strike is flavorful since he fights with two scimitars. Then he brings a 4/1 Cat to the cause. That's really strong and already deserves recommendation as a leader of a Commander brew. And then you can grow by +1/+1 permanently as things die that are bigger than his power, like his token. Great stuff!

38. Orb of Dragonkind

Orb of Dragonkind

Hello fans of Dragons! I wish this were legendary for flavor purposes, but I understand the mechanical restriction that would happen if that were the case. I really like these Orbs. They are a 2-drop and then they can filter one generic mana into two of any color if that color is used for a Dragon spell or ability. Then you can sacrifice this and dig 7 cards into your library and put a Dragon from them into your hand. Great stuff for decks like Tiamat, Bladewing the Risen, and The Ur-Dragon. Love it lots there!

37. Teleportation Circle

Teleportation Circle

I really enjoy this White enchantment! You can exile a dork or an artifact at the end of your turn and then return it, making this a valuable blink card for those decks that seek out an engine. This is mana free way to do so that will always work, turn after turn. Also note that this blinks artifacts which other blinks don't do. Love it!

36. The Rare Creature Land Cycle

Cave of the Frost Dragon

This five-card cycle is pretty cool as unlike most creature lands these can enter the battlefield untapped and ready to be used under the right circumstances. I have already included one of these (Den of the Bugbear) in my Commander deck built around Targ Nar (which you can find here). I love them as they tap for mana and are great in a lot of builds.

35. The Tarrasque

The Tarrasque

The epic creature and one of the hardest to answer or kill is this nasty creature. You pay 9 mana for a 10/10 haste, ward 10, and fighter on arrival. That's pretty good. The fight is likely to kill given its power and survive given its toughness. Haste is great in multiplayer where you can get in one hit before sorcery speed or tapped out players can answer with things like Wrath of God. Ward 10 is basically just hexproof. I wish it had indestructible as that would be on flavor. This nasty creature shouldn't be reanimated or Tooth and Nailed as it's missing its two best abilities that way. Enjoy our top Green card, mythic, and creature!

34. Sphere of Annihilation

Sphere of Annihilation

Here is our top card! As you can see it's Black, rare, and an artifact with an X in its cost. It arrives to the party with a bunch of void counters. At the beginning of your upkeep, you exile the Sphere and all dorks and 'walkers with that X mana cost. It's pretty good at sweeping the battlefield and it is an exiling removal spell that will keep things from being recurred or triggering death triggers. It can also clear out graveyards of that mana value as well. I love it a lot! It's great for formats like Commander and friends.

And there we are! I hope you enjoyed my final Top Ten list from AFR. Next week we'll turn to the best cards from the Commander set that released with it. See you then!
