Hello and happiest of days to each of you! Did you know there are 20 different planeswalkers that have been printed that can be your Commander? We've come a long way since the first batch of Mono-Color options was printed in Commander 2014, huh? Planeswalker Commanders often break the key rules of Commander and do weird stuff while avoiding the traditional weaknesses of creatures, but they can be attacked or killed outright! They are often overly powerful, and many of them just dominate games when they show up. So, I want to take a look-see at the Planeswalker Commanders and figure out how they stack up against each other. That's right, it's time for a Planeswalker Commander Tier List!
S Tier
Let's start with S tier! Jeska, Thrice Reborn costs three mana, has partner (which is broken), and she arrives with loyalty equal to the times you've cast a Commander from the Command Zone this game. You can 0 her to triple the combat damage from one of your creatures that turn. You can also -X her to deal X damage to each of up to three targets. Lord Windgrace is a lovely lands matter Jund planeswalker with 5 loyalty that can +2 to discard and draw, unless you discard a land and then you get to draw two cards. You can also -3 him to return two lands from your graveyard to the battlefield (untapped!).
Teferi, Temporal Archmage costs six mana, drops with 5 loyalty, +1s to dig and draw and then -1s to untap four permanents. That untapping is everything! Folks run it with Stasis or Winter Orb and so much more. That tendency to abuse it in Stax and Prison strategies is nasty - I'm begging you to reconsider! Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools also has Partner and arrives with four loyalty. He +2s to make two chump blocking or sacrifice fodder 0/1 Thrulls. Then you can +1 him to sac a dork or planeswalker to draw two cards, or three cards if you sac'd a Commander.
A Tier
Next up we have A-tier! Aminatou, the Fateshifter enters with 3 loyalty and then +1s to draw a card and toss a card from your hand on top of your library. I'd prefer either looting or rummaging, but that's about as good as you'd expect for three mana, and it can lead to a bunch of top of library tricks with Scroll Rack or Soothsaying[/card. It also works great with shuffle effects and fetches. Then you can -1 her to flicker any of our permanents. Love that!
Next we have everyone's favorite Forgotten Realms Gandalf er... Dumbledore... sorry [card]Elminster, that costs five in Azorius colors and enters with five loyalty. He turns scrying into cost reduction for our next instant or sorcery, which is always spicy, and you can +2 him to essentially cast Serum Visions. His -3 is a potential win-con that exiles the top card of your library and makes 1/1 fliers equal to the cards mana value. Wow!
Estrid, the Masked can +2 to untap all of our enchanted permanents. Then you can -1 Estrid to make an Aura that grants totem armor to the permanent it's attached to. A nice little combo, right?
Next is this set of four-loyalty two-color blue planeswalkers. Saheeli, the Gifted +1s to make a 1/1 Servo artifact token to block or protect, or +1s to make give affinity to the next spell we cast this turn. Cost reduction is always really good, and why this Saheeli deserves a spot in A Tier. Then we have Tasha, the Witch Queen that gives us a 3/3 when we cast a spell we don't own. Then you can +1 her to draw a card and exile an instant or sorcery from each opponent's graveyard with a page counter. Then you can -3 her to cast one of those exiled spells for free! Great stuff!
B Tier
B Tier is up next! Commodore Guff is great for a planeswalker deck, since in our end step he'll toss a loyalty counter on one. Then you can +1 him to make a mana dork 1/1 Wizard that taps for
but just for casting planeswalkers. Then you can -3 him to draw and ping each opponent equal your planeswalker count! Daretti, Scrap Savant can +2 to discard and draw up to two cards. You can -2 him to sac an artifact to reanimate a different one, like Goblin Welder!
Sivitri, Dragon Master is pretty good for dragon decks, but is fine otherwise. She can +1 to shut down attacks like Propaganda but they have to spend two life instead of two mana to attack. Then you can -3 her to Tutor a Dragon to our hand. Not bad, but not the most exciting or synergistic. Jared Carthalion cares about all colors. He can +1 to make a 3/3 trampling Kavu that is all colors. Then you can -3 him to toss +1/+1 counters on two creatures equal to the number of colors they are!
C Tier
C Tier is here! These planeswalkers have okay abilities, but they're too expensive to cast or enter with too low a loyalty. Dihada, Binder of Wills +2s to give a legendary dork a ton of keywords in vigilance, lifelink, and indestructible. Then you can -3 to dig four, and draw the legendary stuff we revealed, binning the rest and then making some Treasures. That +2 is weak, but that -3 is nasty. Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury +2s to make a Llanowar Elves token and then -2s to Naturalize. Both options are pretty good, but they just don't get there on a five-drop planeswalker with 3 loyalty.
Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes arrives with a 1/1 Hamster with trample and haste, and then you can get another one in your upkeep when it dies. Then you can +1 them to grow a trampler or haster with 3 +1/+1 counters. Then you can -2 them to sac a dork, dealing damage equal to that creature's power to any target, and then draw cards equal to its power if it was a Hamster. Great flavor, but limited power in multiplayer.
And now let's turn to the Kenrith twins with partner. Rowan Kenrith and Will Kenrith are fine, but with lower loyalty and a mana value of six each they belong in C tier. Rowan can +2 to make one player attack next turn, like the many Gideons. Then she can -2 to Bolt all tapped dorks target player controls. Pretty strong! Then Will can +2 to make two dorks 0/3 and abilityless. Then you can -2 him to draw two and then our spells and planeswalkers cost less. Not bad, but I wish they both cost five instead so they could come down earlier.
D Tier
Finally, we have these two mono-color 5-drop, three loyalty planeswalkers in D Tier. They are here due to low loyalty or high costs. Nahiri, the Lithomancer can +2 to make a 1/1 Kor Solider that will pick up an equipment for free! Great! But maybe not the most impactful. Then that -2 will drop a free Equipment from your hand or graveyard. That's also nice, but still a little slow. Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath can +2 to drain a life from each foe and then gain that much life. Then you can -2 him to swap a pair of life for a flying 5/5 Demon too. You cannot do that often since his starting loyalty is so low, but it is what it is.
There we go! I hope you enjoyed my Tier list of all planeswalkers that can be Commanders. What are your experiences? Which one is your favorite? Enjoy and embrace it!
