Best Boros Lands for Commander (Red/White)

Reddit

Boros (rw) is arguably MTG's most aggressive two-color combination. The term Boros itself was originally introduced in Ravnica: City of Guilds (RAV), being the name of one of the ten guilds of Ravnica and acting as the city's military.

However, Boros decks in Commander have many different identities. Some decks focus on attacking and having cheap Creatures, such as Arabella, Abandoned Doll. Others are less focused on being aggressive and instead care more about noncreature spells, like Lorehold, the Historian.

This is why it's important to have an air-tight mana base, one that will both allow you to cast your spells easily while also playing into your Commander's unique identity.

No matter what Boros strategy you want to play it's important to understand what the best MTG Red/White Lands are. Let's look at the top overall Boros Lands in Commander, so you'll be prepared to build the best mana base possible for whatever Boros strategy you want to build around.

The Boros Staples

Sacred Foundry
Arid Mesa
Plateau

Arguably, the three best Boros Lands are none other than Sacred Foundry, Arid Mesa, and Plateau.

Sacred Foundry is the most flexible of the three, as it is a Dual Land that can come into play untapped (for the small price of two life) and it also counts as both a Mountain and a Plains. Plateau is just Sacred Foundry, but better! However, Plateau is on the Reserved List, meaning that it won't get reprinted.

Arid Mesa is your second-best option in terms of utility and availability, as it can fetch any Land with the Mountain or Plains type in your deck. While it can fetch out your Sacred Foundry, it also can search for Lands such as Elegant Parlor. This is useful because with Arid Mesa fetching Parlor, you can basically Surveil 1 at Instant-speed.

Spectator Seating
Turbulent Steppe

Two other Lands that are close to Sacred Foundry, Arid Mesa, and Plateau in power are Spectator Seating and Turbulent Steppe. These Lands care about how many opponents you have, so they have diminishing returns if you're only playing with one or two opponents.

Turbulent Steppe gets turned on pretty quickly if you're playing a game with three or more opponents, allowing you to have an untapped Red/White source with the Mountain and Plains types on it as early as turn two or three.

Spectator Seating is just always great when you're playing a 3+ person game. These five Lands are arguably the best Lands for Boros in Commander, but let's take a look at other staple Red/White Lands you should consider playing.

Solid Red-White Lands

Elegant Parlor
Sundown Pass
Clifftop Retreat
Glittering Massif

The next best Boros Lands to consider are Elegant Parlor, Sundown Pass, Clifftop Retreat and Glittering Massif.

As mentioned above, Elegant Parlor acts as a solid Dual Land choice that also has some baked-in utility. Elegant Parlor has the Mountain and Plains types tacked on to it, meaning that you can have Lands like Clifftop Retreat come into play untapped if you already have Parlor in play.

Coupled with the fact you can fetch it with cards like Arid Mesa makes Parlor a solid choice. The only downside is that it always comes into play tapped.

Sundown Pass and Clifftop Retreat are some of your other staple Red/White Lands that are always just good. Sundown Pass comes into play untapped after your first two Land drops and Clifftop Retreat usually comes into play untapped, as you'll either have a basic Mountain or Plains in play when you play it, or a Land like Sacred Foundry.

Glittering Massif always comes into play tapped, has the Mountain and Plains types on it, and has Cycling as its Activated Ability. This means for two mana you can discard this card at any point in time to draw a card. This is useful in longer games of EDH when you don't need another Land, so you can trade in Glittering Massif for a random card.

Next up are more Boros Lands that can enter untapped. Radiant Summit is very similar to Sundown Pass. However, the big difference here is that Summit requires you to have two or more Basic Lands in play for it to come in untapped. However, one big upside to Summit is the fact that it has the Mountain and Plains types on it, so it's another card you can search for with Arid Mesa.

Radiant Summit
Battlefield Forge
Sunbillow Verge

Battlefield Forge is a card that does have a drawback but is still one of the best untapped Dual Lands you can play in Boros. This Land always comes into play untapped and taps for Red or White mana, but at the cost of dealing 1 point of damage to yourself.

Boros decks, especially ones that are aggro, don't care about this minor disadvantage, especially when you start a game with 40 life.

Sunbillow Verge is just a Plains with an upside, as it can tap for Red if you have a card that has the Mountain or Plains type on it in play. Sunscorched Divide is also an okay option, and while it does technically tap for Red and White mana, you'll need another mana source in play to activate it.

Furycalm Snarl is another Dual Land that can come into play untapped, but it requires you to reveal a Plains or a Mountain card from your hand to do so. Note that you can reveal both Basic Lands and Lands with Basic Land types on them for this ability.

Needleverge Pathway can type for either Red and White mana, depending on which side you choose to play. Over the course of a game of Magic, which side you choose won't matter as much, but it's nice to have the versatility in an untapped Land that is better than just a Basic Land.

Sunbaked Canyon

Finally, Sunbaked Canyon is another untapped Boros Land with a drawback of losing 1 life every time you use it for mana, but it does come with the added utility of sacrificing itself to net you a card.

There are other Boros Lands you can choose to play in your deck other than the ones listed above, but they will have more diminishing returns to them. Temple of Triumph isn't a bad option since it lets you Scry 1 when it enters, but this Land always comes into play tapped and doesn't count as a Mountain or Plains.

Inspiring Vantage comes into play untapped on turns one through three, but it's a pretty bad Dual Land to play any turn following three.

Boros Utility Lands

Rogue's Passage
Access Tunnel
Kher Keep

A major part of building your EDH deck's mana base is figuring out what Utility Lands exist and best serve the goals of your Commander. Boros has a variety of different Commanders with unique abilities that synergize well with different Utility Lands, some of which that don't even tap for Red or White mana.

For example, Arabella, Abandoned Doll is a Red/White Commander that cares about Arabella herself attacking. While Arabella only costs two mana, it's easy to keep replaying her from the Command Zone if she dies in combat. However, there are other ways to have Arabella sneak by Creatures in combat.

With Arabella, you can play Lands like Rogue's Passage and Access Tunnel to make her Unblockable. Even Maze's End is a decent option in protecting her in combat.

You can also play a handful of Lands that generate tokens with power two or less, such as Castle Ardenvale, Kher Keep, and Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance. Arabella is a perfect example of a Boros Commander that really benefits from a variety of Utility Lands to help her deal tons of damage to your opponents.

Blinkmoth Nexus
Inkmoth Nexus
Mishra's Factory

Winota, Joiner of Forces is a Commander that cares about attacking your opponents with non-Human Creatures. In Winota, you can play colorless Lands that can become creatures like Blinkmoth Nexus, Inkmoth Nexus, and Mishra's Factory. Since these Lands become non-Human Creatures, they're a great way to trigger Winota, while also acting as a core part of your mana base.

When you're making 4/4 Creature tokens with a Commander like General Ferrous Rokiric, you can utilize Lands like Minas Tirith and Bonders' Enclave as great sources of card advantage.

Any Boros deck that is centered around attacking can also just capitalize on cards like Slayers' Stronghold and Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion to buff up Creatures or provide widespread buffs with cards like Castle Embereth, if you're attacking with multiple tokens.

Restless Bivouac and Needle Spires are solid Utility Lands, as they can become attacking Creatures. However, these Lands don't have great evasion and can usually be blocked or destroyed fairly easily.

Windbrisk Heights

Windbrisk Heights is another Land that cares about attacking that's fairly easy to trigger, especially if you can power out an expensive spell by simply attacking with a few Creatures, which isn't hard to do if you're playing a tokens-based Boros Commander deck.

Finally, Arena of Glory is a pretty versatile Red Land that can slot into virtually any Boros Commander deck. Using Arena of Glory's ability, you can Haste out any Creature you cast off it for only a minor drawback. This was useful in Modern with Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury (until Phlage was banned) but you can use it in EDH to give your Commander Haste.

Conclusion

Mountain
Plains

Overall, Boros has a variety of solid Dual Lands and Utility Lands to choose from. Whether your Boros deck is focused on attacking your opponent down or cares about Artifacts or tokens in some capacity, you can find mana-fixing Lands that will let you cast your spells with ease and Utility Lands that can further your Commander's identity.

When building your next Boros deck it's important to figure out what mix of Lands will provide you with enough value to combat your opponents. Experimenting with your mana base and playtesting your deck will help you figure out what Lands are actively helping your Commander, and which are hindering your game plan.
