The Best Commons and Uncommons in FRA Limited

Reddit

Reality is about to be Fractured. Does that mean you need to forget everything you know about Limited? Not quite. It's time to look at best of the cards that will make up the bulk of your Draft and Sealed pools.

Best White Commons & Uncommons w

White Commons

Memory Trap
Surgical Precision

Memory Trap is perhaps the most obvious inclusion. Three mana removal that answers any nonland permanent is good in most sets. In a set with Jace Planeswalkers all over the place, this effect might be even better than normal.

There is a possibility that it goes the other way; Removal could simply be overwhelmed. If that is the case, an Exile anything effect like Memory Trap still looks very good.

Surgical Precision is a flexible two mana answer to the Creatures that matter. Obviously, this doesn't hit those Jace tokens, but it has variety of applications. There is a strong Lifegain theme in the set, and this triggers those.

It also Cycles if you need a threat of your own -- and triggers Lifegain synergies at the same time. "Destroy big Creature" is often a good card in White, and this is a very good version of that.

White Uncommons

Koth of the Homestead
Your Fate Ends Here

Speaking of Lifegain synergies, Koth of the Homestead is a house. For 2w, the 2/3 body is nothing special. Both of his abilities work very nicely together, though. Gaining you life when a Land enters triggers a lot of stuff in the set. Dishing out +1/+1 Counters when a Plains enters would matter in any set.

In Reality Fracture (FRA), where those counters are the basis of an entire archetype, it matters even more.

We've already covered a couple of Removal spells, but here's one more. For 2w, Your Fate Ends Here is an interesting one. Your opponent is very likely to have a Planeswalker, but that Planeswalker is likely to have a mana value of zero.

Fortunately, this hits a wide range of Creatures to make up for that. Surveil 1 also matters in this set. This will often be worse than its Common equivalent, but occasionally it will be a lot better.

Best Blue Commons & Uncommons u

Blue Commons

Divining Duelist
Icy Reception

Divining Duelist looks too flexible to be anything but good. In fact, the only real downside here is that it might be hard to pick the right mode. Do you tap down a potential attacker, or untap your own Creature for a risky block? Do you have time to try and draw into more action instead? For 2u at Common, you can't ask for much more than this.

In a similar vein, Icy Reception offers a surprising amount of versatility for a cheap Common. For 1u, you're getting most of a Mana Leak or a highly situational combat trick. You probably want the Counterspell most of the time, and it's a shame it can't counter Removal.

Still, Limited is usually about Creatures, so if this ends up being an Essence Scatter, that's still great. No single part of this card is amazing, but the end result is pretty good.

Blue Uncommons

Fblthp, Impossibly Lost
Proft, Consulting Detective

Fblthp, Impossibly Lost looks incredible. The "Achievement Unlocked" moment might come up once in a blue moon, but that's not why you're playing this card. For 1u, this is going to bury your opponent in card advantage. Admittedly, it's not the best thing to play from behind, but if you slam this on turn two you are going to draw so many cards. Just remember that this doesn't trigger off hitting Planewalkers.

Scry or Surveil Typal has been a bit of a trap in some previous sets. Proft, Consulting Detective might single handedly solve that for Reality Fracture.

He does ask you to do a little bit of work, and 2 isn't an insignificant cost. Gaining a +1/+1 Counter and drawing a card is well worth it if you have the time, though. For the low price of 1u, Proft can get the ball rolling very early, too.

Best Black Commons & Uncommons b

Black Commons

Last Gasp
Extended Absence

Black's Commons don't look especially great on paper. The best of the bunch are, predictably, a couple of Removal spells. Last Gasp is good in every set it's in, and this one should be no different. -3/-3 for 1b, at Instant speed, is just incredible efficient. It kills plenty of things outright, and, in combat, it kills even more. It's not particularly interesting, but it is very good.

Extended Absence is less efficient but it kills anything. The little bonus drain is nice in a format where Lifegain and noncombat damage are both themes. Really, though, you're playing this because it kills any threat and that threat isn't coming back. 3b isn't the cheapest, but it gets the job done.

Black Uncommons

Danitha, Spear of Agony
Mabel, Bitter Recluse

Uncommon is where Black starts to get good. Danitha, Spear of Agony rewards you for doing what you already want to do, and that's usually a recipe for success. Killing your opponent's stuff is always good, and even if it gets countered, you still get a +1/+1 Counter.

For 2b, you don't need to do much to make this into a terrifying threat. First Strike is nasty on a Creature that grows as big as Danitha can. Imagine trying to block this when your opponent has Last Gasp mana open.

Mabel, Bitter Recluse is exactly the kind of card that could sneakily over-perform in a set like this. A 1/1 with Deathtouch for b is usually playable, if unexciting. Cards that remove counters from Planeswalkers are usually quite bad, if that's all they do.

Combining the two, though, is a recipe for success. Taking out a Jace token for a single Black mana, while also putting a body into play, seems like it should be great.

Best Red Commons & Uncommons r

Red Commons

Chandra's Emberling
No Admittance

Chandra's Emberling is the type of Creature that can be excellent in the right context. If Izzet (ur) spells are good, this is going to be a real threat. If not, it can look pretty mopey as a 2/2 with Haste for 2r. Fortunately for this Gremlin, there are several cheap spells that are worth including in your deck.

No Admittance is one of them. Lightning Strike does get a lot worse at Sorcery speed, but Empower Jace, even just for one, is a real bonus. It also combines nicely with the Emberling.

If you can follow it up with a No Admittance and Twinned Vision on turn four, you're really doing it. That's going to get a blocker out of the way, draw you a card and give you a four-power attacker.

Red Uncomons

Gallia, the Merrymaker
Kiora of Fire and Ashes

Two drops that tap to give a Creature Haste have been pretty hit or miss, historically. Does it get better if you also give that Creature a permanent buff, though? Definitely.

The fact that Gallia, the Merrymaker also has Haste is what makes this a real threat. It means that even if you top deck it later in the game, it can still do something. That's a big deal for 1r Creature, that would otherwise be a dead draw.

Kiora of Fire and Ashes is going to end games. You would hope so, for 4rr, but bringing a 5/5 Flyer right away is going to go a long way. If the game goes long enough for you to be activating her eight-mana ability, an army of Dragons will surely put the game to bed. Gruul (rg) has a lot of ramp in this set, so this is a very real possibility.

Best Green Commons & Uncommons g

Green Common

Compel Brutality

Compel Brutality is the best of a bad bunch when it comes to Green's Commons. For 1g, you're getting an Instant-speed Removal spell that is open to a lot of disruption. If you can, you should try and use the second mode. Planeswalkers are harder to interact with, even in this set, so you're slightly less likely to get blown out. This card is just fine, but there isn't much competition for this spot.

Green Uncommons

Fblthp, Knows the Way
Way of the Wildspeaker

Like Black, though, Green's Uncommons are much more exciting than its Commons. Fblthp, Knows the Way is going to enable some very fun, very silly decks. If five-colour Jace is going to be a real thing, Fblthp is going to help a lot. He's both a solid Creature on his own, and one of the best enablers for splashing various "Way of..." Enchantments.

Ironically, Green has perhaps the best of that cycle. Way of the Wildspeaker starts out as an unexciting 4/4 for 4g. Empower Jace 7 is absolutely huge, though. With just a tiny bit of help, this starts to look like five mana for eight power and toughness.

Even if you don't have more synergy with Jace, this leaves you enough Loyalty to draw a card. The floor on this one is very good, and the ceiling is absurd.

Conclusion

Reality Fracture has plenty of strong Commons and Uncommons to build around in Limited. White and Black have efficient removal, Blue offers plenty of flexibility and card advantage, while Red and Green have some powerful build-around options.

The abundance of Planeswalkers also gives several cards an extra edge in this format. Keep these cards in mind when cracking packs, building Sealed pools, and making your Draft picks.
