Best Jeskai Lands for Commander (W/U/R)

Reddit

Jeskai (urw) in Magic: The Gathering brings together three colors that are very good at casting spells and Artifacts to set the pace of your Commander games.

Jeskai is particularly well known for Spellslinger strategies, but it also has some of the strongest Artifact synergies among the three-color combinations. That gives you a pretty wide range of Commanders and strategies to build around.

Before any of those engines get moving, though, you need to reliably produce Blue, Red, and White mana. So, if you're building a Jeskai Commander deck, here are some of the best Lands to consider for your 99.

The Best Color-Fixing Lands for Jeskai

Let's start with the primary job of any mana base: letting you cast the cards in your hand.

Tricolor Lands & Command Tower

Mystic Monastery
Command Tower
Raugrin Triome

The easiest place to start is with Lands capable of producing all three Jeskai colors.

Command Tower is the obvious inclusion. It enters untapped with no real drawback and produces Blue, Red, or White mana.

Starting Town is another great option, while Mana Confluence and City of Brass can produce any color at the cost of a little life.

Mystic Monastery and Raugrin Triome are Jeskai's dedicated Trilands. Both enter tapped but produce any of your three colors afterward, making them an auto-include. The big difference is that Raugrin Triome is simultaneously an Island, Mountain, and Plains and can be Cycled if needed.

Summary of the Lands You Need

  • Command Tower
  • Starting Town, Mana Confluence, and City of Brass
  • Mystic Monastery
  • Raugrin Triome

Perilous Landscape

Perilous Landscape

If Fetch Lands aren't within your budget, a cheaper alternative is Perilous Landscape. It taps for colorless mana, but you can also Sacrifice it to search your library for a Basic Plains, Island, or Mountain and put it onto the battlefield tapped.

The Land you find won't be immediately available, but Bountiful Landscape still gives you a way to turn one Land into whichever basic color you're currently missing.

It also has Cycling for a single White, Blue, or Red mana. If your colors are already sorted out later in the game, you can Cycle it instead and look for something more useful.

Check Lands

Glacial Fortress
Sulfur Falls
Clifftop Retreat

Jeskai has access to three Check Lands:

Each enters untapped if you control a Land with one of the appropriate Basic Land types. The more Basic Land types you include, the more consistently your Check Lands enter untapped.

Shock Lands

Hallowed Fountain
Steam Vents
Sacred Foundry

The three Jeskai Shock Lands are:

Each can enter tapped or you can pay 2 life to have it enter untapped, meaning these are the strongest Dual Lands available in Commander outside of the original Duals like Tundra, Plateau, and Volcanic Island. More importantly, all three have Basic Land types.

Hallowed Fountain is a Plains and Island, Steam Vents is an Island and Mountain, while Sacred Foundry is a Mountain and Plains.

Pain Lands

Adarkar Wastes
Shivan Reef
Battlefield Forge

If you want more Dual Lands that reliably enter untapped, Jeskai has three Pain Lands:

Each can tap for colorless mana without any downside or produce one of its two colors at the cost of 1 life. You also won't necessarily lose life every time you use them. Once your colored mana requirements are covered, they can simply produce colorless mana instead.

Fetch Lands

Flooded Strand
Scalding Tarn
Arid Mesa

Jeskai's three on-color Fetch Lands are:

Fetch Lands become significantly better once your mana base contains Shock Lands, Surveil Lands, and Raugrin Triome.

Flooded Strand, for example, can search for any Plains or Island. That includes Hallowed Fountain, Sacred Foundry, Steam Vents, Raugrin Triome, Meticulous Archive, Thundering Falls, Elegant Parlor, and your appropriate Basics.

Fetch Lands care about Land types rather than the colors the Land actually produces, which gives you considerably more options than it might initially appear.

Need untapped mana? Grab a Shock Land and pay the life. Need access to all three colors? Find Raugrin Triome. Have enough mana and want some card selection? Grab one of your Surveil Lands.

Bond Lands

Sea of Clouds
Training Center
Spectator Seating

Jeskai also has access to three Battlebond Lands:

Each enters untapped as long as you have two or more opponents. That's barely a restriction during most four-player Commander games, giving you an untapped Dual Land without paying life or needing another particular Land type on the battlefield.

Surveil Lands & Scry Lands

Meticulous Archive
Thundering Falls
Elegant Parlor

The three Jeskai Surveil Lands are:

All three enter tapped and let you Surveil 1 when they enter.

That gives you some immediate card selection while potentially putting a useful card into your graveyard. More importantly for your mana base, each has two Basic Land types for your Fetch and Check Lands.

For more budget-friendly options, Jeskai also has three Scry Lands:

You lose the Basic Land types and the ability to put something into your graveyard but Scry 1 still helps improve your next draw.

Verge Lands

Floodfarm Verge
Riverpyre Verge
Sunbillow Verge

Jeskai's Verge Lands are another strong option once you've built enough Basic Land types into your mana base.

Each can immediately produce one of its colors but requires you to control a particular Basic Land type before it can produce the other.

Artifact Lands

Razortide Bridge
Silverbluff Bridge
Rustvale Bridge

Jeskai is one of the most Artifact-friendly three-color combinations, so some decks can make their mana base contribute directly to their Artifact synergies.

The three Bridges in Jeskai colors are:

All three enter tapped, but they're both Lands and Artifacts. They're also Indestructible.

That opens up plenty of additional synergies in Artifact-focused decks. They increase your Artifact count, can contribute to mechanics like Affinity and Improvise, and can interact with cards that Sacrifice or otherwise care about Artifacts.

Darksteel Citadel is another option. It only produces colorless mana, so it isn't helping fix your Jeskai colors, but it does give Artifact decks another Indestructible Artifact in a Land slot.

The Best Utility Lands for Jeskai

Once you can reliably produce Blue, Red, and White, you can start dedicating some Land slots to supporting what your deck actually does.

For Jeskai, that often means one of two things: casting lots of Instants and Sorceries or shenanigans with Artifacts.

Otawara, Soaring City

Otawara, Soaring City

Otawara, Soaring City is an easy Utility Land to consider because there's very little opportunity cost involved. On the battlefield it just taps for Blue mana. But its Channel ability lets you discard it to return an Artifact, Creature, Enchantment, or Planeswalker to its owner's hand.

That's especially useful in Jeskai control and tempo strategies. You can temporarily remove a dangerous permanent, clear a blocker, or even save one of your own permanents from removal.

Uthros, Titanic Godcore

Uthros, Titanic Godcore

Uthros, Titanic Godcore is much more specialized, but Jeskai Artifact decks have a very good reason to pay attention to it.

Uthros enters tapped and normally produces Blue mana. Its Station Ability lets you tap another Creature you control to add Charge Counters equal to that Creature's power.

Once Uthros reaches 12 or more Charge Counters, you can pay a Blue mana and tap it to produce Blue mana equal to the number of Artifacts you control. Yes, this is a fixed Tolarian Academy.

In an Artifact deck capable of putting ten, fifteen, or even more Artifacts onto the battlefield, however, Uthros can become a ridiculous mana engine sitting in one of your Land slots.

Adagia, Windswept Bastion

Adagia, Windswept Bastion

Adagia, Windswept Bastion gives Jeskai Artifact decks another payoff for building around permanents that already fit their strategy.

Like Uthros, Adagia enters tapped and has Station. Once it has accumulated at least 12 Charge Counters, you can pay four mana and tap it to create a token copy of an Artifact or Enchantment you control, except that the copy is Legendary. The ability can only be activated as a Sorcery.

That can mean another copy of an important mana rock, value engine, or other Artifact payoff.

Mystic Sanctuary

Mystic Sanctuary

If your Jeskai deck is packed with Instants and Sorceries, Mystic Sanctuary is a must. It enters tapped unless you control three or more other Islands. When it enters untapped, you can put an Instant or Sorcery from your graveyard on top of your library.

Putting your best removal, counterspell, extra-turn spell, or other powerful Instant or Sorcery back on top can give Spellslinger decks exactly the card they need for another round.

Mistrise Village

Mistrise Village

Mistrise Village gives Jeskai decks a reliable tool for protecting important spells. It can make the next spell you cast that turn Uncounterable. That's particularly useful in Spellslinger decks where a large spell, combo piece, or Commander represents a significant mana investment.

Emergence Zone

Emergence Zone

Emergence Zone taps for colorless mana, but you can pay one mana, tap it, and Sacrifice it to cast spells that turn as though they had Flash.

You can wait until immediately before your turn to deploy an important permanent, hold mana open for interaction, or simply force your opponents to respect the possibility that you can play something at Instant speed.

Desolate Lighthouse

Desolate Lighthouse

Desolate Lighthouse gives Jeskai a simple but useful way to improve the quality of the cards in your hand.

For 1ur, you can tap it to draw a card and then discard a card. You're not gaining cards overall, but you are turning the least useful card in your hand into another chance at finding something better.

Some Jeskai strategies can also take advantage of putting specific cards into the graveyard, turning the discard into part of the plan rather than merely a cost.

Building Your Jeskai Mana Base

Island
Mountain
Plains

Jeskai may not have Green's enormous selection of Land ramp, but it has no shortage of excellent fixing.

Raugrin Triome, Shock Lands, Surveil Lands, and Fetch Lands form a strong foundation because their Basic Land types allow several pieces of your mana base to support each other. Check Lands become easier to turn on, Verge Lands become more reliable, and Mystic Sanctuary becomes much less demanding.

From there, your Utility Lands should reflect what your particular Jeskai deck actually wants to accomplish.

Artifact strategies have unique options ranging from the Indestructible Artifact Bridges to powerful Lands like Uthros and Adagia. Spellslinger decks can get more from Mystic Sanctuary, Mistrise Village, and Desolate Lighthouse, while Otawara and Emergence Zone provide flexible utility across a much wider range of decks.

Just remember: there's nothing worse than sitting behind a collection of incredibly synergistic Utility Lands with five spells in your hand and realizing that none of them produce Blue.
