Best Uncommon Commanders from MSH

Reddit

There were 77 different cards released at the Uncommon level in the Marvel Super Heroes (MSH) set. Today, we're going to narrow that list down to the best ones.

Uncommons don't have the best reputation among Magic players. Often, they're little more than draft chaff that shows the direction Limited didn't take. But, many of these cards are quite good.

These can be fun for throwing something together with friends, building on a budget, or even setting up a new player with their first deck.

So, get ready for an explosion of good cards and flavor wins as we look back at Marvel's best uncommon Commanders.

Top 20 Uncommon MSH Commanders

20. Human Torch, Johnny Storm

Human Torch, Johnny Storm

Human Torch, Johnny Storm is a three-drop Red Wind Drake with Flying. When we draw a card, if we control another Hero, we can ping one foe for damage. If you focus a whole deck on Heroes, that can be a win con on its own.

We can also pay 6RR to put three +1/+1 Counters on him. That's not bad but turning card draw into a life loss engine can be a great backbone for a brew.

19. Loki Laufeyson

Loki Laufeyson

Loki Laufeyson is a fun two-drop in Red. He's a 2/1 God Sorcerer Villain with a power-up that lets us add two +1/+1 Counters for five mana. We only get to do it one time, bumping him up to 4/3, but we can do it for just 3 if we do it when he enters.

Once he's in play, we can tap him for just one to copy an Instant or Sorcery that's cheaper than his power. A copy on a stick is amazing here, especially if we can get free spells with a value up to four.

18. Captain America, Living Legend

Captain America, Living Legend

For 1wu, we get Captain America, Living Legend, a 3/4 Human Soldier Hero. When our Creatures become tapped on our turn, we can untap them once. From mana dorks and pingers to Creatures that swing, and Looters, there are so many ways to get value out of another tap this turn.

That's a very strong effect for a Commander and gives us tons of ways to build around him, especially perfect for a go-wide strategy.

17. Iron Man, Master of Machines

Iron Man, Master of Machines

Iron Man, Master of Machines is a four-drop Izzet ur Legendary Artifact Creature with a 1/4 body that comes with Flying and Vigilance. Being able to swing and still keep him free to block is a great bonus. His power gets a boost from our Artifact count, making him a nasty win con in the air for go-wide Artifact brews. That count can include mana rocks, dorks, Clues, and Treasures.

Toss in Armor Wars and we can draw a ton of cards. Then, when Iron Man swings, we can draw a card if an Artifact came onto our battlefield that turn.

16. Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord

Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord

Baron Strucker, HYDRA Overlord is a fun three-drop mono-Black 2/2 Human Villain. It seems like he's a good fit to have Noble printed, like Baron Helmut Zemo does. Mole Man, Moloid Master doesn't have Noble either, though, even though he rules the underground. Maybe Wizards didn't agree that was a good flavor fit.

Von Strucker makes our Villains cost 1 less per cast. Then, when another Villain enters, we can Connive once each turn. That's great card flow for free while also building up our graveyard. This works on every turn, not just ours. So, a Villain with Flash can give us another Connive on an opponent's turn. Tokens should work here too.

15. Red Hulk

Red Hulk

Red Hulk is a fun six-drop mono-Red 6/7 with Reach and Trample. When he takes damage, we put a +1/+1 Counter on him, much like Fungusaur. Then he can deal damage to any target equal to the number of counters on him. That's great for Creature or Planeswalker removal, and it can even serve as a win con.

I love that potential so much. You can build him around self-damage with pingers, Burn, +1/+1 Counters, and plenty more.

14. Black Panther, Vanguard

Black Panther, Vanguard

Black Panther, Vanguard is a four-drop 4/4 in Selesnya wg colors. When another nontoken Hero enters, we can make a 1/1 Soldier token or give our Creatures +1/+1 until the end of the turn. That's either a win con or a token maker, depending on how the board looks and what you need at the time.

13. Ant-Man, Colony Commander

Ant-Man, Colony Commander

Ant-Man, Colony Commander is a fun Simic ug 2/2 three-drop with an Attack Trigger. We can pay 1 to put a +1/+1 Counter on a Creature. Then, once each turn, we can make a 1/1 Insect if we put a counter on a Creature. He's great in Insect brews, token decks, counter decks, or all three at once.

12. Grim Reaper, Lethal Legionnaire

Grim Reaper, Lethal Legionnaire

Grim Reaper, Lethal Legionnaire is a fun four-drop mono-Black 3/4. When he attacks, we can pay his mana cost of 3b to return a Creature from our graveyard to the battlefield tapped and attacking with a Finality Counter on it.

Getting that recursive engine over and over again is brilliant. Those Creatures get Exiled if they die. It's great that they get to swing right away.

11. Attuma, Atlantean Warlord

Attuma, Atlantean Warlord

Attuma, Atlantean Warlord is a 3/4 Merfolk Lord for 2uu. He pumps our other Merfolk Creatures by +1/+1. Then, when they attack, we can draw a card. That's just one card per attack, though. Despite this, Attuma still provides very solid value.

10. Viv Vision, Teen Synthezoid

Viv Vision, Teen Synthezoid

Viv Vision, Teen Synthezoid is a fun three-drop 2/2 colorless Lady with Flying. She has a Gray Ogre-sized body with Flying too. We can pay 7 to put two +1/+1 Counters on her. Then, when she attacks with four or more power, we can draw a card.

That's why she's here. She's a fun, self-contained colorless leader who can pump herself and draw us cards. She's also good with +1/+1 Counters or for acting as a Glorious Anthem for Artifacts.

9. Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards

Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards

Mister Fantastic, Reed Richards is a four-drop 2/4 with Reach. Whenever a token enters, we can draw a card. This is only once per token, but there are no other restrictions. The card draw from this token generator can provide so much value.

Imagine building this with something like Reed Richards, Smartest Man and Nadir Kraken. In just a few turns, you could be running over the table.

8. Shuri, Wakandan Inventor

Shuri, Wakandan Inventor

Shuri, Wakandan Inventor is a two-drop 2/1 Legendary Creature. She makes our Artifacts cost 1 less each, much like a Pearl Medallion for Artifacts. That's a mad cost cut for colorless cards.

Then we can tap her and pay a mana to make one of our Artifacts a copy of another Artifact. Our copy isn't Legendary and we can only use this ability as a Sorcery. But that means our Solemn Simulacrum can become a Sol Ring for the turn. It could also become a Treasure, Clue, or even our Skullclamp. Amazing in all sorts of Artifact decks.

7. Whiplash, Vengeful Engineer

Whiplash, Vengeful Engineer

Whiplash, Vengeful Engineer is a one-drop 2/2 that enters tapped. When he attacks, if he's Equipped, we can drain an opponent for the number of Equipment attached to him and gain that amount of life. That's a bit of a win con too. Mono-Black doesn't really do Equipment, so this is a fun color to try it out with.

6. Tigra, Feline Fury

Tigra, Feline Fury

Tigra, Feline Fury is a fun two-drop 2/1 Legendary Creature with Flash and Trample. She's great in lifegain brews. Whenever we gain life, we put a +1/+1 Counter on her. Just wait until the lifegain is on the stack, then Flash her out. From Essence Warden to Natural Spring, there are plenty of ways to make her bigger.

5. Misty Knight, Hero for Hire

Misty Knight, Hero for Hire

With Misty Knight, Hero for Hire we can tap this two-drop 3/1 and pay 2 to discard a card. Then we draw cards equal to the number of cards that we discarded that turn. That's so strong and could pair well with cards like Big Score.

4. Ka-Zar of the Savage Land

Ka-Zar of the Savage Land
Zabu (Token)

Ka-Zar of the Savage Land is a five-drop 3/2 that arrives with a 2/2 Legendary Green Cat token named Zabu. He has Landfall, too. We can look at the top card of our library and play a Land from there. That helps us keep up our Land drops and trigger Zabu.

Then we can put a +1/+1 Counter on him too. He's great in Landfall decks or for ramp and token builds.

3. Hawkeye, Young Avenger

Hawkeye, Young Avenger

Hawkeye, Young Avenger is a fun four-drop 2/4 with Reach. She can turn noncombat damage dealt to a foe or their Creatures into extra damage equal to her power. Her base power is two, so that's two extra damage each time. That's great with Burn strategies, Guttersnipe, mass removal like Pyroclasm, and much more.

2. Echo, Perceptive Prodigy

Echo, Perceptive Prodigy

Echo, Perceptive Prodigy is a three-drop mono-Blue 1/4 with Vigilance. She can swing and then tap for one mana to copy an Activated or Triggered Ability from one of our Creatures, allowing us to choose a new target for the copy. That's great for triggers like Solemn Simulacrum ramping when it arrives. It also works with Arcanis the Omnipotent.

1. Doc Samson, Super Psychiatrist

Doc Samson, Super Psychiatrist

Doc Samson, Super Psychiatrist is a five-drop 3/6 that taps for mana equal to his power. Right there, that's three mana as a base. Then, whenever counters are put on our permanents, we can add another mana. Also, if we would put any counters on a target Creature that we control, we get to put that many counters plus one.

That's like having a better way to turn Loyalty Counters into extra mana while also powering up +1/+1 Counters. He's amazing in so many builds, from Planeswalkers to counter decks to power-based brews.

Honorable Mentions

Iron Fist, Living Weapon
Stature, Size Shifter
Captain Mar-Vell, Space-Born
Rick Jones, Destined Sidekick

Iron Fist, Living Weapon

Iron Fist, Living Weapon is a three-drop 2/3 Human Warrior Hero. When we cast spells that target our own Creatures, he gets the ability to tap and deal damage equal to his power to any other target. That's like having a pinger such as Kamahl, Fist of Krosa.

Stature, Size Shifter

Stature, Size Shifter is a fun one-drop 1/1 with a neat win con. Her tiny size makes her Unblockable. That stops when she gets bigger, but then she can pay xuu to put X +1/+1 Counters on herself. That can turn her into a nice Commander Damage win con too.

Captain Mar-Vell, Space-Born

Captain Mar-Vell, Space-Born is a fun five-drop 4/4 with Flying and Vigilance, much like the classic Serra Angel. Whenever a foe casts a spell on any turn, our stuff gains Flash for that turn. They get some control over when we can do this, but this can still provide a lot of value.

Rick Jones, Destined Sidekick

Rick Jones, Destined Sidekick is a one-drop 0/3 with a Wall of Wood-sized body. We can tap him for 3 to mill four cards. Then we can return a Hero or Enchantment from our graveyard to our hand, which is basically like drawing that card.

That works well as a leader for Mill, Enchantment, or Hero brews depending on what playstyle you like the most.

Conclusion

Uncommon Commanders give us a fun way to build decks without reaching for the same old Legends. They also let us look at cards from a different angle. A card that might pass through a draft deck can become the heart of a Commander brew.

That's one of my favorite parts of Magic. A card doesn't need to be Rare or Mythic to give us a great deck idea. Sometimes a small card has just the right ability to get the whole thing moving. The Marvel set gives us plenty of those cards and I had a blast looking through them to find the ones that made me want to build.
