Boldly Taking a First Look: Star Trek Previews

Reddit

Today's Weekly MTG stream was a pre-recorded first look at the upcoming Star Trek Universes Beyond set.

Perfectly timed before MagicCon Amsterdam this weekend, the team got together to give us a tour and let us see where Magic could boldly go with this new release.

Star Trek Previews

This show highlighted a few major cards, gave us a peek at special variants, and upcoming products where we'll find all the goods.

Here's what we found out:

New Cards

We'll start off by checking out several of the new cards coming this November.

Captain James T. Kirk
Captain Kathryn Janeway

The captains served as the centerpiece of every Star Trek series, so they were an obvious starting point for the preview stream.

One of the first characters we got to see was Captain James T. Kirk, an icon of the original Star Trek series. He flavorfully depicts the character's very Red personality as well as his ability to persevere when backed into a corner.

The second card was for Captain Kathryn Janeway, from Star Trek: Voyager. She's the first card featuring Explore, which has been touted as a main mechanic for the set. Here, though, it's a simple cameo mechanic.

Dr. Beverly Crusher
Hoshi Sato, Exolinguist
Beckett Mariner, Impetuous Ensign

Other crew members from throughout the series are also included in this Star Trek expansion. A new flavorful Creature type, "Officer," has been added as a 'catch all' for members of this spacefaring group.

USS Enterprise D, Galaxy Class

But, of course, what would a crew be without their spacecraft?

Spacecrafts and the Station mechanic make their return with this set. The first one we got to see was the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class. This is the ship used in Star Trek: The Next Generation and is one of dozens of tidbits that will be exciting for longtime fans.

Salt Vampire
Crystalline Entity

Throughout the series, we meet many otherworldly beings and antagonists, like the Salt Vampire and Crystalline Entity, with more expected to make a showing as we get more cards in the coming days.

In the Pale Moonlight
Amok Time
The City on the Edge of Forever

Several classic Star Trek episodes are depicted here as Saga cards. Three were previewed during the stream, though we learned we'll be getting 10 in total. This continues an element of Universes Beyond releases seen within sets like Doctor Who and Marvel Super Heroes.

Breeding Pool
Hallowed Fountain
Steam Vents

We'll also finally get the long-awaited return of the Shock Land cards. All ten of these iconic Lands are included in Star Trek, which is sure to make opening Boosters that much exciting.

Variants

Not only did we get our first look at several new cards, but also a host of special variants for you to collect. Let's take a look at what could be in your packs and how to find them.

LCARS Frame Cards

Dr. Beverly Crusher
Captain Kathryn Janeway
Blood Crypt

The Enterprise is well known for its Library Computer Access and Retrieval System, aka LCARS. With this release, we get a special LCARS frame that is designed after the show's computer visuals for this system.

We'll get 29 cards with this special new frame, including prints of Dr. Beverly Crusher and Captain Kathryn Janeway. All 10 Shock Lands will also get an LCARS print.

Classic Enterprise Cards

Salt Vampire
Captain James T. Kirk

On 24 cards, you can find the Classic Enterprise frame, which captures the look of vintage Star Trek posters. Many of these will represent the classic vibes of Star Trek: The Original Series, though it's not clear if this is the only era represented with these frames.

Surge Foils

Dr. Beverly Crusher Foil
Captain James T. Kirk Foil
Watery Grave

Various Surge Foil treatments will be given to both the LCARS frame and the Classic Enterprise cards. These will be found exclusively in Collector Boosters.

Scene Cards

Captain Kathryn Janeway
Seven of Nine

Scene cards make their return, too. These have become a staple of Universes Beyond releases, highlighting major events or settings from the property they represent. We're not yet sure of the scenes we're getting this time around, but, they're bound to be as Spock on as the rest of the characters and settings we've seen so far.

Signed Headliner Cards

Captain James T. Kirk
Captain Kathryn Janeway

The most exciting of these new variants is easily the set of Signed Headliner cards featured in Star Trek. These special versions, though they won't look exactly like what we see here, include autographs from the actors who play each of the characters.

We've only seen two, but there will be seven in total. Five have captains and five have other beloved characters. Each card is hand signed and, though they're not serialized, have roughly 200 of each that can be pulled via Collector Boosters in low quantities.

Extended Frame Cards

Crystalline Entity
USS Enterprise D, Galaxy Class

Last but not least, the typical Extended Frame cards are also back. These are typically reserved for any Rare or Mythic Rare card in the set that didn't receive any other special variant. You'll be able to find these exclusively in Collector Boosters.

Stardates Cards

In addition to the cards from throughout the main set, Wizards unveiled a single card from the bonus sheet, Star Trek: Stardates Cards, which will include various Magic cards reskinned to depict iconic series moments.

Khan, Engineered Evil

Sheoldred, the Apocalypse makes an appearance here as Khan, Engineered Evil. This depicts Khan from the film Star Trek: Into Darkness, though the classic Khan will show up in other cards.

Wizards stated that 30 of these will be included in this bonus sheet. Non-foils will appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters while the foil versions will be Collector Booster exclusives.

Welcome Decks

WeeklyMTG Star Trek

Wizards also unveiled a series of Star Trek Welcome Decks. Each of these includes a fixed set of cards for new players and comes with a few unique cards.

Spock, Logical Choice
Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest
Kirk, Enterprising Captain
Benjamin Siski, Besieged

All five colors get their own Welcome Deck, making for a fun way for fans to see what Magic is all about. While no further information is available on them yet, we'll likely see more details come out with the Star Trek Las Vegas event in August.

Promos

Finally, when it comes to individual card previews, there are a few Promos worth taking a look at.

USS Enterprise D, Galaxy Class

First up, we got to see a gorgeous Schematic rendition of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, Galaxy-Class. This special art treatment is one of eight cards that you can find within a Beam Me Up Bundle.

Highly Illogical
Munitions Enthusiast
Solemn Simulacrum

Several other Promos were revealed and you can get those by attending local play events.

Commander events can net you special versions of Highly Illogical or Munitions Enthusiast. If you play in Magic presents: To Boldly Go events, you can find yourself taking home a cosmic rendition of Solemn Simulacrum card as well.

Burst Lightning

Players who win at their local Standard Showdown events could get their hands on a sweet new promo for Burst Lightning or another card that hasn't been revealed yet.

Explore
Fact or Fiction

If you plan to hit up MagicCon Atlanta, you can track down two fancy promos for Explore and Fact or Fiction.

Kirk, Enterprising Captain
Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest

Other events will feature a handful of additional promos. A special treatment of Kirk, Enterprising Captain will be available at both Star Trek Las Vegas and San Diego Comic Con.

New York Comic Con, held in November, will feature a promo for Borg Queen, Perfection Manifest. Additional events will be held at AWS re:Invent and PAX Unplugged, though no Promos were revealed for those just yet.

Products

Let's wrap things up by taking a look at the various products that coincide with this set.

Star Trek Collector Boosters

Of course, Star Trek will come with the classic Play and Collector Booster Boxes.

Play Boosters are the most basic release, and include all the cards you need to play while also allowing for Limited experiences. Collector Boosters, on the other hand, are for the most die-hard fan and contain some of the hottest cards from this release.

MTG Federation Fleet
MTG Landing Party
MTG Klingon Fury
MTG We Are the Borg

Star Trek also boasts a whopping four preconstructed Commander decks. Fans can play with their favorite characters with Federation Fleet, Landing Party, Klingon Fury, and We Are the Borg.

No cards from these precons were previewed during the First Look, though it was revealed that each deck would contain 32 all-new designs.

MTG Federation Fleet Collector's Edition
MTG Landing Party Collector's Edition
MTG Klingon Fury Collector's Edition
MTG We Are the Borg Collector's Edition

We also got to see the Collector versions of each of these decks. The Collector version contains every card in a special surge foil version, as is consistent with previous Collector versions of Universes Beyond releases.

Star Trek Bundle MTG
Beam Me Up Bundle

Star Trek also brings with it two new Bundle releases.

The first is the standard version with 9 Play Boosters, 30 Basic Lands, a foil Promo card, and an oversized spindown counter, as well as a handy storage box.

The other one is the fancy Beam Me Up Bundle, which is closer to your average Gift Bundle. It has special box art and includes one Collector Booster, two of eight Beam Me Up promo cards, and everything in the standard version.

Star Trek Beginner Deck
Star Trek Draft Night Box

Fans looking to experience Magic for the first time will be able to pick up a Beginner Box release. This is also great for veteran fans of Star Trek looking to see what the game is all about.

For the more experienced fans, Draft Night is back and comes with everything players need to organize a Pick-Two Draft event at home. Each of these includes 12 Play Boosters, Basic Lands, Tokens, and a single Collector Booster to give out as a prize.

Star Trek Scene Cards Enterprise Q
Star Trek Scene Cards Divergent Timeline

Finally, two Scene Boxes were revealed. These will highlight characters and moments from both Star Trek: The Next Generation and the alternate timeline of the J.J. Abrams directed Star Trek films. Each of these will follow the pattern of prior Scene Box releases with a set of six new cards, matching art cards, a display easel, and three Star Trek Play Boosters.

Conclusion

Star Trek is looking to be an absolute love letter for long-time fans of the franchise.

If you're someone who enjoys both Magic and Star Trek, then buckle up because it's sure to be an exciting time once previews start rolling out in earnest.

The set releases on November 13, 2026 with Prereleases starting on November 6.

As far as we know, MagicCon Amsterdam and ST:LV Trek to Vegas will be the next key dates to watch for collectors.

It's going to be exciting to experience space... the Final Frontier.
