Reign of Jafar Set Review: Sapphire

Reddit

While this article is probably not going to be published in the order it was written it is my last of this set. Let me tell you, I am maxed out. So if my normal cute quips and phrases seem lacking I am sorry.

As I am sure you've seen by now I'm not ranking or rating cards for this set. Instead I am just talking about the cards that gave me a reason to pause and think.

These cards represent a couple of first. A base card that wants to be Shifted on top and a Shift card that costs the same as its normal play. If you pull both together you get an even card count removal. You gain an ink but lose the Mech Engineer while your opponent loses a character of choice ( as good as Hades) while they also gain an ink. Your upgrade will be a 3 /3 Evasive with 2 Lore while your loss is a 1 / 3 with 1 Lore. All this for 3 less than Hades seems good to me.

Base numbers are good for sapphire. The So Naughty ability can be quite a drawback if your opponent has any card draw in his deck. Versus decks that are "jazz hands" the overflow of ink isn't a big deal. The bummer and bonus of the card is the Stealth Mode ability. Free replay is awesome but each free play also triggers So Naughty which can be an exponential issue. My personal issue is the timing of Stealth Mode. You have to decide before the draw. Which could both limit you from doing it since you have no inkable in hand OR makes you wish you hadn't since you need that ink you just discarded.

I am sure you remember Prince Naveen - Ukulele Player and now we also have Tiana - Natural Talent. Both can Sing this and play a card for free from the top three of the deck. While we don't have a good trick that can move a card we want on top of the deck, playing a randomish 6 ink cost in the early game is powerful. Tipo, Pluto, Lantern, or even just use the ukulele with Cinderella and you could see a Tamatoa on turn two!

I mention this card because of the unused potential of Resist. Resist 2 can make many characters basically unbeatable.

Any card with 4 Lore needs to be looked at twice. But to be honest, after the second look just look away and never go back. At 8 Inkable you have to trick it in and then you need to be sure to ink EVERY turn. No thank you.

For my last entry I am putting both these ladies together. The Item draw engine is now officially insane. Given the number of decks that already love items in play and/or in discard we may be on the verge of domination. Good Luck.

Let's wrap this up with the usual tag line. All the cards that are cool to Ink can be found at coolstuffinc.com.
