Hunting for Value

ug is a popular color combination in Magic. The ability to combine Green's efficient creatures and mana ramp with Blue's countermagic and card advantage is powerful and exciting. It's also something that we haven't seen much of in recent years. One of the most exciting things about the unbanning of Jace, the Mind Sculptor in Modern is that it pairs so well with mana creatures, especially in a shell like this:

Nissa, Steward of Elements
This deck plays a lot of one-mana acceleraiton in the form of Arbor Elf and Noble Hierarch. These cards help you power out early Planeswalkers like Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Nissa, Steward of Elements to try to run away with the game early on. While other Blue decks are playing tap lands and Serum Visions, you can just slam a Jace on the third turn. Alternatively, you could dream even bigger with Utopia Sprawl and try to cast a Jace on the second turn of the game. Against more aggressive decks, you can try to curve into Courser of Kruphix to help you hit land drops, provide some card selection and advantage, and give yourself more of a life buffer.

One of the most interesting things about this deck is what it does with all the card selection provided by Jace and Nissa. Revenge of the Hunted is a really powerful card that hasn't had much of a home, even in its Standard and Block formats. Revenge of the Hunted can be an absolute blowout, particularly against opposing creature decks in board stalls. When Courser of Kruphix is great at gumming up the ground and the rest of your deck gives you such fine control over when you're going to miracle Revenge of the Hunted, it's easy to imagine situations where the card just wins you the game.

The other exciting thing about this deck is that you get the chance to play with Mystic Snake against control decks. Mystic Snake is an incredible counterspell because it trumps traditional mirror breakers like Negate and Dispel.

If you're looking for an excuse to play a midrangey ug deck in Modern, this looks like a great place to start. You've got a solid combination of ramp, card advantage, and card selection. You may struggle somewhat with the linear aggressive decks, but it seems like that your sideboard could solve any problems with decks like Burn and Affinity.
