Nicol Bolas, I Just Can't Quit You

Reddit

Grixis has been quite the enigma in Standard. The deck has had a host of powerful cards in its colors in the last year or two, but has never been able to put them together into a tier one deck like its much better known Esper sibling. The removal is there, the threats are there, Thought Erasure is there... but the recipe always comes up short.

However, for the love of Bolas I just can't stop trying!

Ashiok, Nightmare Muse
Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths
Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger

Thankfully, Theros Beyond Death provides Grixis with a whole host of powerful new cards; A great new planewalker, a great value threat, and most importantly a whole new angle of attack that can present a very fast clock with an interesting synergy alongside Dimir legend Lazav, the Multifarious. Add this to the good cards already present in Standard; Thought Erasure, Thief of Sanity, Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God, and great removal, and maybe we've got something here.

Time Stamps:

Match 1 - 00:07:08

Match 2 - 00:43:22

Match 3 - 01:17:31

Match 4 - 01:31:23

Not too shabby!

Lazav, the Multifarious
Angrath's Rampage
Thought Erasure

The best thing about this version of Grixis is how lean the mana curve leans. Rather than being jam packed at four and five mana, we're very heavy at two and three mana, allowing us to interact quickly and double spell early, all while building toward a very powerful planeswalker-based endgame. The Lazav, the Multifarious mini-combo with Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger was on full display many times, and each card was reasonable enough on its own to not be embarrassing. Ashiok, Nightmare Muse was phenomenal, forming a one-two punch with Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God to control the board, draw cards, and kill our opponents.

The only cards that underperformed were Tyrant's Scorn and Bedevil. Tyrant's Scorn just wasn't that exciting for a four-of removal spell, and Bedevil was mostly out performed by Murderous Rider on almost all fronts.

Otherwise the deck was a blast to play and we won most of our games, making for a winning combination. Could this finally be Nicol Bolas' time?
