The Lorwyn 5 are the first group of Planeswalker cards introduced to Magic The Gathering in 2007. Ajani Goldmain, Jace Beleren, Chandra Nalaar, Garruk Wildspeaker and Liliana Vess were brought into the game delivering a new card type, a slew of new mechanics and a ton of questions. Liliana has been crucial to the story of MTG for the past dozen years and today we'll take a look at her back story and speculate who we would like to see potentially play her in an upcoming film adaptation.

Liliana's Lore

Just like the original protagonist of MTG, Urza, Liliana's story starts on the plane of Dominaria. Liliana was of noble heritage and joined the Forward Order as a cleric, as seen on the card Liliana, Heretical Healer. She was aloof and a temptress which caused her peers Duress but she could have cared less about her reputation. This led her to practice the necromantic arts as she thought it would assist in her healing abilities.

After a battle, her brother Josu was afflicted by a magical illness and her mentor asked Liliana to find the required plants to cure him. Upon finding its location, she learned her fathers enemies had destroyed the plants to prevent its harvest. Just then a stranger, whom we know as The Raven Man, encouraged Liliana to use her necromancy to sprout new roots. She collected them, created the cure intended to restore her brother only to find she had been betrayed. The cure caused her brother to go into a frenzy killing most of the clerics around her. Liliana resorted to her necromancy to raise the dead clerics as zombies and battle her brother once more. This resulted in her planeswalker spark igniting and teleporting her to the plane of Innistrad.

After unlocking her planeswalker spark Liliana explored the multiverse, training under vampires and liches on Innistrad to grow her power. Then she moved to the university of Strixhaven on Arcavios to study under the tutelage of the Witherbloom. Her ultimate bid for power came when she met the elder dragon Nicol Bolas, who helped her broker a deal with four demons for even greater magical prowess. She starts an on again off again relationship with Jace Beleren, finds the magical artifact The Chain Veil to boost her powers even further, has an on again off again relationship with Gideon Jura, and battles Eldrazi on two separate planes. All while this is taking place Liliana is slowly and methodically destroying the demons she bargained with. This ultimately reveals the secret of the contract, now that the demons are gone, she's become a thrall to Nicol Bolas himself.

Nicol Bolas, whose story covers tens of thousands of years, uses her necromantic abilities to control a massive undead army of his own design. Together they trap opposing planeswalkers on the plane of Ravnica in an attempt to steal planeswalker sparks, but in a bid of defiance Liliana turns the undead horde on Nicol Bolas, defeating him for the time being. From here we leave Liliana back on Arcavios, now a teacher at Strixhaven, where she can reflect on her life, past battles and betrayals.

With the potential of a Magic The Gathering movie on the horizon, we hope that Liliana is somewhere to be seen in the film. Let's check out a few actresses that we think would be perfect for the role of the Queen of the Dead herself.

5. Nina Dobrev

Nina Dobrev is most recognized from her time on the show The Vampire Diaries. She played multiple characters with complex levels of humanity or lack thereof. I think she would be perfect in tackling the dualistic nature of Liliana.

Jenna Ortega is most well known for her role as Wednesday Addams on the Netflix show Wednesday. She would be perfectly cast to play Liliana in her youth, young and carefree with her magical and necromantic abilities.

3. Kat Dennings

Kat Dennings is best known for her MCU roles in Thor and Wandavision. She plays the spunky and sarcastic Darcy Lewis. Kat's ability to deliver quips after quip would be perfect for a Liliana in the middle of her adventure, destroying demons and saving the multiverse.

2. Christina Ricci

Just like Jenna Ortega, Christina Ricci is best known for her role as Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values. She was a 90's darling with a dark streak. Christina would be perfectly cast as Liliana's alternate identity Professor Onyx.

Gal Gadot is easily the number one pick to play Liliana. She's played the villain, she's played a hero, she's even played the original queen Cleopatra. Gal is perfect for a veteran Liliana, hunting relics, defeating demons, and leading the Dreadhorde on behalf of Nicol Bolas.
