Vorthos Holiday Gift Guide: Art Swag

Reddit

If you’re reading this, it means you survived Black Friday and prevented all rancor damage at your local Wal-Mart. Here’s to not getting trampled. So, with what cash you have left, may I suggest you drop a little dough on some art. Think about it: The one-time outlay for a print divided by the number of future days you’ll enjoy it equals unmatchable economic value. Plus, a gift of art for a friend or loved one does something that no electric drill or summer sausage can: Art seduces us away from the soul-sucking mire of everyday life, enchanting the eye and exciting the spirit into peeking over the threshold of reality versus fantasy. In that moment, the mind knows boundless freedom. That’s a gift worth giving.

Rob Alexander

You can get a set of 5 × 7 prints of all ten of the original Ravnica shock lands for $45. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that if you don’t take advantage of this, you’re a moron. Keep your favorites, give the others to your crew—or keep ’em all. It’s $4.50 a piece—burn to the but-art’s-too-expensive! excuse.

Steve Argyle

Steve’s site is easily shoppable once you go to gallery. There, you can click on your favorite pieces and add the size of print you want to your cart. A supersized, super-sexy Liliana will make anyone happy this year.

John Avon

John appears to be selling most of his items through StarCityGames or eBay, with sets of his beloved lands readily available. I hope these offerings will expand to include more of his nonland work as well.

Daarken

There is a small(ish) collection of Daarken’s MTG works for sale on his website, but it does include favorites such as Korlash, Heir to Blackblade, Bloodhusk Ritualist, and Bloodghast, with some less-high-profile stunners such as Bog Wraith, Dread Warlock, Trapmaker's Snare, and Ethersworn Shieldmage also available.

Rebecca Guay

“It might not be a commonly known piece because it never appeared on a card you could play. The only time this has seen print was on a 6" × 9" oversized card, but that doesn't mean it's not cool. In fact, it might make it even cooler.” – Tom Jenkot in Wizards Asks. This glorious take on Serra Angel is one of the select few MTG works available on Guay’s site. A real swaggy collector’s print.

Michael Komarck

Iconic works such as Sorin Markov, Rafiq of the Many, and Knight of the Reliquary are part of Komarck’s gallery. Komarck also did the cover for The Purifying Fire, which makes a great gift for the fantasy-romance novel lover. Komarck’s shipping info is here.

Howard Lyon

Lyon made a splash in Innistrad with his soft, yet dark touch. A wonderful large (13 × 18 inch) limited-edition print runs $100, with Goldenglow Moth, Taste of Blood, and Crusade also among the offerings.

Chris Moeller

Yes, an original Moeller acrylic can be yours—a lot of gorgeous Moeller works are listed between $200 and $500 in his store. The Phantom General above is $250, as are Electropotence, Corpse Lunge, Guardians' Pledge, Vines of Vastwood, Yamabushi's Flame, Spider Umbra, and Zealous Persecution. If you ever wanted to pick up original swag, this is the place to do it.

Terese Nielsen

Terese Nielsen’s ethereal and sensuous style makes her a favorite among fans. She has soldered glass jewelry and accessories, mouse pads (such as the Eternal Witness version I mentioned at StarCityGames: Seattle), prints, and originals (some discounted!) on her site. I would especially recommend Descendants' Path for family members.

Also, that Elvish Ranger can be yours for $12.95.

rk post

rk post playmats are available for $25 through the man himself via his Facebook page, including the brand-new and droolworthy Unmask shown above. You might have to catch rk on the road to score gifts since he’s traveling right now; you can also e-mail him with inquiries: postrk at aol dot com.

Steve Prescott

Steve has an amazing eighty-page art book of his illustrations available; just holler at him, and check out his blog and his other blog.

Susan Van Camp

Hymn to Tourach and other prints are available from artist Susan Van Camp in her Etsy store. It’s such a great card and with such tribally psychedelic art that it should be hung in Magic man/maneater caves everywhere. [Editor’s Note: Hymn to Tourach prints have since sold out! Pick up your art quick. Wyluli Wolf and Waiting in the Weeds prints are still available from Susan Van Camp.]

Go forth and conquer in love, life, and shopping this holiday season. Till next time, may Magic be the palette of your great masterpiece, or at the very least, your electric drill and summer sausage.
