Edge of Eternities Previews Come to a Supernova Finish

Art of the Magic card Radiant Summit

Edge of Eternities previews are finally over! The entire set has been revealed, bringing with it tons of new science fiction-themed cards. With the set's prerelease just a week away, I'd like to walk you through some of the remaining coolness that's been revealed in the last week, as well as several of the set's awesome Commander cards.

There's a lot to cover so let's not waste any time and get right to it!

The New Hotness

Starwinder

Just when you thought it was nuts enough drawing cards off Enduring Curiosity, this monster comes along. If you attack with multiple 2 power creatures after warping this in, you'll draw two cards for each one that connects rather than just one! That's a massive swing in card advantage and has many players wowed by the potential things this sort of card can get up to both in competitive and casual play alike.

Pinnacle Starcage

Goodbye Temporary Lockdown. Welcome back Temporary Lockdown.

For a hot minute, players were worried that the rotation of Temporary Lockdown would make it difficult for control decks to be able to compete. Well, sometimes things just work out for the best. This card is a little different than Temporary Lockdown in that it only hits creatures and artifacts, but the relevant element usually revolves on nuking your opponent's critters anyways. This will no doubt be a mainstay in Standard for some time going forward and is something you should be ready to deal with.

Xu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist

Reanimation effects are often extremely potent for their ability to put expensive powerhouses onto the battlefield for a remarkably affordable rate. Xu-Ifit, Osteoharmonist (what a name to try spelling out) offers a unique twist on this tactic. Sure you can reanimate your creature, but it doesn't have any of the abilities that make it cool. Can you imagine reanimating something like a Griselbrand or Atraxa, Grand Unifer with this? Boring! Things get a bit silly when using cards like Death's Shadow, though, so it'll be interesting to see what players get up to with it in the coming weeks.

The Latest Commander Cards

Patrolling Peacemaker

Wow is this a flavor home run. The card is an outstanding triumph of flavor meeting function, basically depicting a robotic guard or cop. As such, it gets more powerful when your opponents commit crimes! There's not much more to say beyond that, but the concept struck a chord for players everywhere as something really cool to be able to do in Commander going forward.

Planetary Annihilation

This card generated quite a bit of buzz and even some controversy when it was first revealed. The recent adaptation of brackets in the Commander format has taken aim squarely at cutting mass land destruction. However, that's exactly what this card is doing. Thus it becomes a matter of where is the line drawn with something like this compared to other powerful spells that can destroy multiple lands and how appropriate is it for a precon-level deck?

The real talk of the town when it came to these Commander decks, however, were the all-new lands in them. These lands are the beginning of multiple releases that will include the enemy colored versions of the Battle for Zendikar tango lands and the Amonkhet bicycle lands. These will appear across multiple sets in the future, with Gavin Verhey also noting that they will be increasing the new card design count to 12 cards per deck over the current 10. The intention for this change will be to put out new lands and mana fixing options.

Awesome Reprints

Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus
Moraug, Fury of Akoum
Oracle of Mul Daya

The Commander decks aren't just packed with cool new cards either! There are several great reprints, including expensive cards like Tekuthal, Inquiry Dominus and Moraug, Fury of Akoum. The Counter Intelligence deck seems to boast the higher number of value reprints with cards like Ripples of Potential, Cyberdrive Awakener, and Swan Song leading the pack. Both decks contain tons of goodies, though, and are both excellent pickups.

The second week of previews for the Stellar Sights bonus sheet has shown us some truly potent cards getting reprints in this set. Ancient Tomb is easily the biggest standout, being a major player in Commander and Legacy and being extremely expensive. Many players were quick to call out that and Strip Mine as being extremely potent for MTG Arena formats like Timeless. Inkmoth Nexus also provides the first true reprint that isn't in a Secret Lair, offering some fresh new availability on that card as well.

Last but not least are the set's Special Guest cards. For these ten cool new reprints, Wizards leaned into the sci-fi pulp novels that served as inspirations for the set's tropes. Each is stylized to look like the cover of a book you might see from the mid-1900s that plays up the campy retro-futuristic look of the genre at the time. Many of these reprints are quite powerful too, with low print cards like Darkness and Green Sun's Zenith getting notable reprints here.
