Yip Yip! Avatar: The Last Airbender Previews Take Off!

Reddit

Flameo, my good hotmen! Avatar: the Last Airbender previews are here at last!

This all-new preview season for the latest Magic release kicked off with the debut show and follow-up stream on Tuesday. Dozens of sweet new cards were shown off, backed by the voice of Dante Basco, beloved voice actor of the show's character Zuko. With so many cards revealed, I wanted to take some time today to take a look over a handful of cool new previews and show off what looks awesome about the set.

Let's fly right into the discussion! Yip yip!

What's New and Pricey?

Badgermole Cub

It wasn't long before we started seeing some real heavy hitters pop up for preorder. Badgermole Cub immediately made people everywhere perk up, as it makes your mana dorks tap for extra mana while costing next to nothing to do so. Not only can this juice up the land you earthbend, but it also substantially improves the potency of Llanowar Elves - another Standard staple. This is only taking Standard into account as well, but the card is certain to be a big player in other formats like Commander as well.

Wan Shi Tong, Librarian
Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong

Hey! Hey wait a minute, I've seen this one, it's a classic! Wan Shi Tong, Librarian is bound to be an extremely powerful card. Longtime Standard fans will recognize the similarities between this card and the likes of Sphinx's Revelation and Hydroid Krasis. Both of those were all-stars of Standards past and this knowledge spirit is certain to make a splash as well. The Planetarium of Wan Shi Tong also looks to be no slouch as well, as it too commands a strong price, often for the reasons I talked about in my preview article for the card earlier this week!

White Lotus Tile

Leave it to Commander players to get excited about a new mana rock that's certain to generate absurd amounts of mana in the right deck. Typal synergies are fan favorites, making White Lotus Tile an instant hit in those kinds of decks, whether they really need that much mana or not. Because of this, it's already commanding quite a costly amount, and may bleed into Standard with the typal-centric Lorwyn Eclipsed right around the corner.

The Cards People Are Talking About

Usually, the most talked about cards in a set reflect cool and interesting things, while maybe not being the most powerful and expensive cards in the set. This time around, though, there's a more obvious approach to the cards being discussed most heavily: memes and memorable moments.

The original Avatar: the Last Airbender cartoon spawned an endless slew of them, with perhaps the most iconic of the bunch being the Unlucky Cabbage Merchant. His cabbages are always getting destroyed, leading to his iconic exclamation of "MY CABBAGES!" The card also has some potential as a mana ramp outlet, so that's certainly helped give it some extra buzz.

Leaves from the Vine

No sooner did we find ourselves chuckling at the Cabbage Merchant than we started tearbending when Wizards showed off Leaves from the Vine. This famous moment depicts the beloved Uncle Iroh mourning the loss of his son on his birthday, and remains one of the most heartbreaking sequences for many fans of the series.

Secret Tunnel

"Secret tunnel! Secret tunnel! Through the mountain! Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel!"

This card comes from an episode in the second season of the show (Book Two: Earth) where the Gaang goes through a secret mountain passage. Along the way, they're joined by a group of hippie-like performers who sing the infamously memeable song. We're also introduced to the badgermoles properly in the episode, which is why it leans so much on earthbending thanks to the land's particularly memorable line of "This land can't be blocked."

Sozin's Comet

Normally I limit this section to three cards but, well, there were so many cool cards to talk about with this set! Just before the debut show happened, a handful of previews trickled through with Sozin's Comet being among them. Players immediately were blown away by the amount of mana this card can generate and scrambled to find ways to break it in all kinds of formats. It should certainly make for an exciting card to play with once the set releases in just a few short weeks.

Awesome New Reprints

The Source Material Cards bonus sheet continues with Avatar: The Last Airbender. These 61 cards each showcase an individual episode of the original series' run, using screenshots from their respective episodes to depict the cards in question. Some of these have seen positive responses, such as the new treatment of Mystic Remora, while others such as the new printing of Cruel Tutor have been met with disdain. Regardless, just about every card revealed thus far is a sweet one, even if the treatments themselves can be a bit hit or miss.

Additionally, a small number of reprints were revealed to be coming with the Avatar: the Last Airbender Jumpstart release. Only two cards were shown here: Descendants' Path and Fiery Confluence. Both are casual staples and are always welcome as reprints.

He's been crushed, tossed, and trampled...

But he's never been forgotten.

Last but not least, it was revealed during the debut stream that there will be several Avatar: the Last Airbender Secret Lairs coming during a future Superdrop. While only one was shown off, it was a stellar one: the Cabbage Merchant having his cabbages ruined in a variety of ways. Is the value great on this one? Not terribly, but the card choices and accompanying art make it perfect as is regardless.
