WeeklyMTG Stream Brings More Hobbit Previews

Reddit

It's another fine day to explore the wonderful world of J.R.R. Tolkien with The Hobbit.

The second Tuesday of preview season kicks off with a bang. Today, you'll find some powerful Rares and Mythic Rares as well as some great cards to enhance your Limited experience.

Sadly, the Classic Artist individual card previews have all ended for the preview season, but it's likely we'll see the remainder of them on Friday.

The WeeklyMTG Stream Previews

Almost every Tuesday, Wizards provides special announcements, reveals, and important discussions via their WeeklyMTG stream. Today's stream brought us several previews for The Hobbit.

Fateful Discovery

First up is Fateful Discovery, a powerful new Mythic Rare Enchantment.

Every time you put an Artifact into play, you draw a card. Pay attention to the wording on that. If you make multiple Artifact tokens at once, you'll draw a card for each one. In Commander, this can prove devastating, making it sure to be a staple of the format.

If the right deck comes along, it might even be good enough in Constructed.

Hobbit Hole

The powerful Enchantment was followed by something a bit more quaint: Hobbit Hole. This card depicts the home of Bilbo Baggins at Bag End, representing the start of The Hobbit.

In terms of gameplay, it's mostly just another variation of cards like Terramorphic Expanse or Evolving Wilds. To match the flavor, though, it also has the addition of Halflingcycling 4.

There aren't many ways to make use of this in the set besides Bilbo and Gollum, but in Hobbit-themed Commander decks, this can go a long way.

Elvenking's Halls
Goblin-town

Iron Hills
Lake-town
Mirkwood

Next, we saw some of The Hobbit Dual Lands.

These are an unusual mix of Allied and Enemy color pairs rather than sticking to one side. This better reflects the set's Draft archetypes, as is typical for Lands meant to smooth the Limited experience.

Each of these enters tapped and taps for one of two colors. If you pay two generic and one of each color the Land can tap for, you can sacrifice it to put two +1/+1 counters on a Creature.

Each card supports a different, specific Creature type.

Plains
Island

Swamp
Mountain
Forest

We also got our normal Basic Lands for the set. These come in addition to the previously revealed full art Basics that depict Thorin's Company's journey through Middle-earth.

However, these Basics have a little twist to them: flavor text. Each of these includes lyrics from the story's songs that are depicted as Sagas throughout the set. This marks the first time we've seen flavor text on Basic Lands since Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate.

Elven Passage

Rounding out our look at Land cards for the day, we get a new take on Fabled Passage with Elven Passage. In many cases, this will be simply another Terramorphic Expanse/Evolving Wilds type of card. If you have a deck playing any kind of Elves, though, it turns into a Prismatic Vista.

This is great for many Multicolor decks that have Green. In Green, it's likely that you'll be running Elves as mana dorks, making this easy to turn on. Its applications may be deeper than you think as well, with Llanowar Elves being a mainstay in the popular Standard Landfall variants floating around.

If The Hobbit spawns a new Elves archetype in Standard, you'd better believe this is going to be an instant four-of.

Bilbo Baggins, Burglar
Gollum, Silent Slinker
Beorn, Reluctant Host

The stream also showed off several Limited-focused Legendary Creatures.

Each of these focuses on a lower rarity Legend for fans to play with. To help make them feel distinct and useful in multiples, each of these features the Adventure mechanic. This way if you draw extras, you can simply cast their Adventure side and save the actual Creature for later.

Ori, Keeper of Songs
Nori, Teller of Tales

We also got a look at several more members of Thorin's Company, each at Common. This includes Ori, Keeper of Songs, Dori, Bearer of Friends, and Nori, Teller of Tales. Each of these plays into the Red-White Dwarves archetype, especially Nori who can be cast for either color.

Duskwatch Hunter
Mirkwood Nurturer
Patient Instructor

Following in the example of Nori, we also got a look at several Common cards with Hybrid mana costs. Each of these gives players better flexibility in Draft while still providing good signposts to help steer Draft picks.

What makes these especially useful is their crossover with multiple archetypes. For example, the Black-Green archetype will center around Ferocious, a mechanic that cares about you having a Creature with four or more power.

Duskwatch Hunter is great at this, since it can put itself right into Ferocious status. However, you can use the Green side of Mirkwood Nurturer to fuel this strategy, even if it's a Green-Blue card.

Little Bear
Ordinary Bear
Large Bear
Gigantic Big Bear

Last but certainly not least, the stream gave us a look at several Bear cards in several sizes. Each aptly named rarity comes with increasingly large stats. Gigantic Big Bear is particularly notable for being the biggest Bear ever printed.

Additional New Cards

The stream wasn't the only place we saw new cards today.

Dancing from Dark to Dawn

The bears kept coming with this awesome new Mythic: Dancing from Dark to Dawn. The more Creatures you cast, the more counters you can pump your team with along the way. Even better, playing Lands will trigger Landfall and allow you to make more Creatures to power up.

Both modes are excellent and will let you dominate games of Limited and Commander. It probably is a bit too costly for something like Standard Landfall, but if players can make it work, this might be a beating there as well.

Gleaming Splendor

Next up is another Mythic Rare - the last one, in fact - called Gleaming Splendor.

Players usually love drawing lots of cards but this Enchantment punishes them for doing so, allowing you to stock up on Treasure tokens. Even better, you can force your opponents to draw a second card, while giving yourself another in the process.

So far, we've only seen its special Book Frame variant.

Gloin The Mighty

From here, we mostly saw a lot of lower rarity stuff. This includes Gloin the Mighty, another member of Thorin's Company, who is surprisingly strong for an Uncommon. Not only is the board wiping Adventure good, but if he sticks around on the board, you'll get an extra rr every turn with no strings attached. Talk about a good deal.

Most Decrepit Old Bird
Nasty Little Rabbit
Old Fat Spider

We also got to see plenty of the critters that populate Middle-earth. These include names that feature descriptions used by Tolkien in his works, including Nasty Little Rabbit, Old Fat Spider, the previously revealed Great Ugly-Looking Goblin, and a Most Decrepit Old Bird.

The Bird is the only Rare card among these, becoming a very efficient beater once you have enough cards in your graveyard. To help fill it up, you can use the Adventure side to not only Mill yourself, but also get a spell back into your hand too.

Eagle's Rescue

Eagle's Rescue is a cool new Aura. On the front end, it's a very strong power boost like you'd get from Serra's Embrace.

Unlike the Embrace, though, this offsets the potential of getting two-for-one'd with its second ability. This lets you return it to the battlefield at Sorcery speed, as long as you put it onto a 1/1 Creature.

Thror's Map

Finally, Thror's Map gives players a fantastic option for Limited. This Artifact lets you find a Basic Land for cheap while also giving you the chance to draw and discard later.

It stops you from being able to loot too much by having it also be Legendary. However, you can still run extra copies to find more Lands in a pinch.

Sweet Booster Variants

In addition to all the new cards, we got a few more special variant treatments to show off.

Most Decrepit Old Bird Dragon Hoard Frame
Gloin The Mighty Dragon Hoard Frame
Dancing from Dark to Dawn Dragon Hoard Frame

More cool Dragon's Hoard frame cards were revealed today. Most Decrepit Old Bird, Gloin the Mighty, and Dancing from Dark to Dawn each get this scaly treatment with gorgeous alternate art.

Each of these also comes in the extra fancy Surge Foil treatment. These Collector Booster exclusives are the best way to bling out your favorite decks and show off.

Dain's Company Dragon Hoard Frame

Finally, the Company cycle continues with Dain's Company. It's a great way to lean into Dwarf Kindred decks and can be a great way to find critical Equipment in decks like Pioneer Hammer Time.

This version provides another piece of the "The Five Armies Clash!" Scene Art by Denman Rooke. You'll be able to find this in all packs of The Hobbit along with the "Fight with the Great Goblin" scene by Ted Nasmith.

Conclusion

That wraps things up for another day of The Hobbit previews.

We got to see several awesome cards from the WeeklyMTG stream as well as plenty of others. From funny names to epic Enchantments, there's been a lot of great stuff to check out.
