When Wizards of the Coast released The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth back in June 2023, fans of the franchise were eager to learn how The One Ring would integrate with the rules of Magic.

They were not disappointed. The One Ring went on to not only be the most valuable card in the set, but a special 001/001 printing of the card would also be one of the most valuable Magic cards of all time, valued at $2,000,000.
"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them." - Ring Inscription
In addition to the famously desirable The One Ring card, WOTC also created an entire mechanic built around the Ring's flavor. It only makes sense, given how central the Ring temptation is to the entire story.
The keyword action was named The Ring Tempts You, but what exactly does that mean in MTG? Ironically, The One Ring doesn't Trigger The Ring Tempts You itself, so it's important to distinguish between the two.
The Ring Tempts You: Keyword Action
While The One Ring is a card, The Ring Tempts You is a unique MTG ability. The keyword action goes deeper than what fits in the reminder text of any given card.
Fortunately, WOTC printed a special The Ring Tempts You rules card that explains each step of the process.

Once The Ring Tempts You, you get an emblem eponymously named "The Ring" if you don't already have one.
The emblem starts at the first level and progresses one step further down the card until you reach the max, after four temptations. At the same time, you choose a Creature you control to become or remain your Ring-bearer.
This already sounds complicated, but it can be simplified. Effectively, when The Ring Tempts You for the first time in a game, you get an emblem called The Ring set to Level One and you choose a Creature to become your Ring-bearer.
Then, if The Ring Tempts You again, you move up to the next Level and you can either keep the Ring-bearer the same or change to a new Creature. Each step you progress along the Ring Tempting ladder gives your Creature incremental abilities that accumulate:
- Level One: Your Ring-bearer is Legendary and can't be blocked by Creatures with greater power.
- Level Two: Whenever your Ring-bearer attacks, draw a card, then discard a card.
- Level Three: Whenever your Ring-bearer becomes blocked by a Creature, that Creature's controller sacrifices it at end of combat.
- Level Four: Whenever your Ring-bearer deals combat damage to a player, each opponent loses 3 life.
The first time you're tempted, your Creature has the pseudo-Evasion Ability of Level One. Get tempted again, and whichever Creature you choose now Loots upon attacking and can't be blocked by Creatures with greater power.
Level Three and Level Four accumulate in the same fashion, so by the end your Ring-bearer Creature has a pesuedo-Evasion Ability, Loots upon attacking, has the Basalt Golem combat ability (minus the 0/2 token), and drains each opponent for three if it gets through.

Thus, by Level Four, your Ring-bearer becomes a formidable Creature that is both painful to block and painful to allow through.
The combination of Looting (to help dig for more cards) and forced decision of either losing blocking Creatures or losing a chunk of life makes The Ring Tempts You a powerful MTG mechanic when exploited to the maximum.
Additional Rulings
It's important to highlight a couple of cards that include The Ring Tempts You in the rules text.
There happen to be around 50 such cards, which can be as simple as a cantrip attached to the ability, as in Birthday Escape, or they can carry a multitude of other rules text and caveats, such as Commander-favorite Frodo, Adventurous Hobbit.

Rules surrounding The Ring Tempts You can become fairly complicated, which is why Wizards of the Coast printed a special emblem card that explains the mechanics involved. The reverse of the token also emphasizes some important nuances associated with the ability.
First, The Ring can tempt you even if you don't control a Creature. If it's your first Temptation you receive the emblem and start at Level One; you just can't reap the benefit of the Ring-bearer since you won't control one.
Not to worry because once you're tempted again, you'll have another opportunity to select a Creature. It's actually required: every time The Ring Tempts You, you must choose a Creature if you control one (you can choose the same Creature to remain the Ring-bearer).
In fact, even if you're Level Four and get tempted again, you can still select a Ring-bearer, so you never really "miss the boat" in that way.
The Ring gains its abilities from top to bottom (Level One to Level Four) throughout the game. Once it has the ability, it keeps it for the rest of the game. You cannot lose the benefits of having been Tempted. Additionally, there is currently no way to lose Levels of Temptation.

Finally, each player can only have one emblem named The Ring and one Ring-bearer. There's no doubling up here, which makes sense from a flavor perspective. After all, there was only One Ring so having multiple One Rings and Ring-bearers would be a flavor fail.
MTG's The Ring Tempts You FAQ
What happens if The Ring Tempts You and you don't have a Creature?
If it's the first time you're Tempted, you receive an emblem called The Ring set at Level One and that's it. If it's a subsequent time, you advance The Ring to the next level.
Either way, you don't have a Ring-bearer because you don't have a Creature, but the emblem still advances.
Can The Ring Tempt multiple Creatures?
No. You can only have one Ring-bearer at a time.
What happens when The Ring Tempts You a fifth time?
The emblem remains at level four, and you must choose a Ring-bearer (it can be the same one as before or the new one).
Is The Ring tempting a Triggered Ability?
The action of The Ring Tempts You is a game action. However, the cause of ring temptation is often a Triggered Ability, and the action of choosing a Ring-bearer can also Trigger subsequent abilities, such as on Call of the Ring.
What happens if your Ring-bearer dies in MTG?
You lose your Ring-bearer, but you still keep The Ring emblem at the same level. You'll need to be tempted again in order to select a new Ring-bearer.
Can I interact with The Ring associated with a Ring-bearer?
The Ring isn't any of those things. A Creature is designated Ring-bearer, but that quality can't be copied or removed without its controller selecting a new Ring-bearer when they're tempted a subsequent time.
