There has been a ton of cards worth talking about in Lorwyn Eclipsed. It's one of those sets where we see players coming back for certain staples. I wanted to discuss a few niche Blue cards that have slid under the radar or aren't held in high regard.
Aquitect's Defenses
So, I'm not exactly convinced this is a good card, but it is an interesting way to give something hexproof in Blue. Instant speed interaction could be cool. If it phased out the creature it might be cooler, but beggars can't be choosers.
Blue isn't huge in instant speed hexproof in my experience. At least it's on my radar as a good way to protect a commander like Hakbal of the Surging Soul. Instant speed protection that buffs isn't nothing.
Champions of the Shoal
This card is a 4/6 for ![]()
. Yeah, you've got to behold a Merfolk, but let's be honest about what types of decks are playing this card. I find that being able to Crew or Station into its effect is great. You could do it two times on the turn it comes down. Putting a stun counter on something with this effect gets that creature out of the way for two turn rotations.
I don't know how good it would be if you ran it in non-Merfolk decks because the cost is mandatory. However, getting this thing going with Freed from the Real would be so nutty. A little salt inducing but it's a potential avenue to a win in Commander.
Disruptor of Currents
I. Love. Convoke. It's what makes Clever Concealment such an insane card. It can give the appearance of no interaction, into a big blow out. Giving a creature Flash and Convoke is so interesting. Being able to return another target nonland permanent to your hand, is huge at instant speed. Someone swinging for lethal on you, declaring blocks, and then flashing out a bounce spell is so goated.
Additionally, it's a 3/3 blocker which can pack some punch. Maybe you could Convoke out a bigger than expected blocker. It's such a shame that this card is ![]()

. I wish it had a little more umph. I'm not sure I would play it in anything other than a Merfolk deck, though.
Glen Elendra Guardian
This card is incredibly versatile. Flashing out a creature and countering a spell is sometimes so necessary. It's just that it stinks that it would cost as much as five mana for a noncreature spell counter. There are way better rates out there like An Offer You Can't Refuse. And removing a -1/-1 counter is part of the cost. The 3/4 flyer is not nothing either, but it seems a little steep.
However, having it out and a way to put counters on it could be something. Paying ![]()
is so rough when you have to remove a counter from her, but they couldn't just make another Glen Elendra Archmage, I guess. Either way if there are ways to put counters on her, she's excellent. Because of her 4 toughness she can even hold some -1/-1 counters as well.
Glen Elendra's Answer
Yeah, I know! People were talking about this card, but I feel like it fell out of favor fairly quickly. It was talked about being a Commander staple, but it sort of has too much mana investment to be viable. Most players aren't holding up four mana in cEDH, at least in my opinion. Maybe they are, but not often.
I think when people wrote it off for Commander, it fell out favor and notice. I rather like it a lot though. If you have a way to discount your Instants or Sorceries, this card is good. If you're playing a spell-slinger deck, it might be helpful if you end up in a stack war. It's a little niche of this could be an all-star in Heliod, the Radiant Dawn. The reduction of spells costs and the likelihood of a stack war is huge.
Loch Mare
I was surprised people weren't talking about this card more too. Loch Mare such an incredible card, and rightfully listed as a Mythic. Being able to be a 3/4, draw two cards, and have another draw in the chamber for 6 mana seems really good. Being able to draw a card and make this creature stronger is such an interesting interaction.
It's also the sort of thing that is a 4/5 for ![]()
if you find a way to have things enter without counters. It also has a versatile second ability that, personally, I'll never use because the ability to draw cards is so good. Deck centered on Blue counters might want to use this, or at least any other deck that wants to pay ![]()
every turn to draw a card.
Omni-Changeling
Again, the incredible Convoke! I know it seems like I'm trying to put y'all on with some bad cards just because it says Convoke in it, but this is different. I like this card because it's a Phyrexian Metamorph for potentially no mana spent. In a token strategy like Alandra, Sky Dreamer or Minn, Wily Illusionist, this card could be so good. Convoking out something with tokens you're not usually using for anything.
Conclusion
I found a handful of fun Blue cards from Lorwyn that are good in niche situations. That's the thing with Commander. Whether a card is really good or not can be purely situational. I see some use here but let me know what you think. I'm @strixhavendropout on everything.
