Wizards Reveals Key Details from Phyrexia: All Will be One

Reddit

Wizards of the Coast revealed much more about the world of Phyrexia in a Twitch stream today. The World Building Reveal of the terrifying Phyrexians was hosted by @LadeeDanger and featured content creators in addition to a panel with the Phyrexia: All Will Be One story team from Wizards of the Coast.

To briefly catch you up, Phyrexia: All Will Be One is our trip back to the plane the Phyrexians and their praetors inhabit. As @RhysticStudies narrated in the intro, it's... not a very nice place. The five praetors from New Phyrexia have each designed a part of the plane to match their own twisted machinations, and this set is a deep dive into how the Phyrexians operate... and what it means for the rest of the multiverse as Elesh Norn plans an invasion of all planes.

Phyrexia: All Will Be One releases on Feb. 10, 2023, and it'll end the four-set Phyrexian story arc, paving the way for the biggest event set since War of the Spark: March of the Machine. Things are going to change, and the imagery Wizards shared today of the heavily altered New Phyrexia is, frankly, terrifying. In the best way.

The panel included Mary Kathryn Amiotte-Beaulieu, who carries the truly unique title of "Head Phyrexian Linguist," Lead Art Director Ovidio Cartagena, and Senior Creative Lead Matt Danner. They described the drastic changes that have occurred to the plane of Mirrodin since the Phyrexians invaded and successfully took over, as told in the sets of the Scars of Mirrodin block. Now the Phyrexians are in full control, and Amiotte-Beaulieu summed up their goals simply:

We are Phyrexia. We will sow Perfection into the soft flesh of this world.

Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines

As the story goes, planeswalkers from across the multiverse have teamed up to try and fight the Phyrexians on their home turf and fight through the nine layers of the plane in control of the five Praetors. It's a wild departure from Mirrodin as it once was, with the new world reflecting the whims and machinations of Elesh Norn, Sheoldred and the rest. That's what the planeswalkers are up against. But as we've known for the past several weeks, not everyone will make it out unscathed. And as they told us in the video reveal, no path to Phyrexian perfection is ever treaded twice.

That brings us to the "Compleated" Planeswalker cards. We've seen this mechanic with Tamiyo, Compleated Sage, and the cycle is continuing in Phyrexia: All Will Be One as planeswalkers fall to the Phyrexians and their sleeper agents. Not just defeated, but compleated - something that was previously impossible for the Phyrexians to achieve.

That blows open a world of possibilities, and the advancement of both Magic story and design.

Ajani, Sleeper Agent

The hype here is simple: no one is safe. Lukka has already joined Ajani and Tamiyo in compleation, and previews over the next few weeks will reveal who else will be turned into a Phyrexian. And to drive that point home, Wizards showed off "compleated" versions of all 10 planeswalkers involved.

The first edition of the Magic Story paired with Phyrexia: All Will Be One dropped on the mothership here. With the panel leaving it ambiguous which planeswalkers will fall, all eyes are on the next stream at 9 a.m. PST on January 17, 2023. We'll cover more developments from the reveal of Phyrexia: All Will Be One as they roll out over the next few weeks!

And while we wait, we have something else to enjoy: the full reveal of the translated Phyrexian language, at long last.
