Gathering Magic Exclusive Spoiler: Scars of Mirrodin

Reddit

The Scars of Mirrodin spoiler season has been a little unorthodox, at least as far as MTG spoiler seasons go.  The set is released at the end of September, yet there was really not a peep about it until one week ago.  Mechanics, Planeswalkers, and story have all been purely speculation, but the dam has burst open, as it always does, and Gathering Magic is a small part of the resulting flood.  Without further ado, here is our exclusive Scars of Mirrodin spoiler broken down, piece by piece.

There is only a short list of Legendary Cats that can be pulled from the Magic multiverse, but the group is varied.  Including the likes of Cat Giants (Jareth, Leonine Titan), Cat Lords (Jedit Ojanen of Efrava), and one Cat in two forms, both vampire (Mirri the Cursed) and warrior (the accurately titled Mirri, Cat Warrior).  However, there has never been a Legendary Cat Cleric, at least not until now.  So this is uncharted territory… or is it?  There was one other Legendary Cat that prowled Mirrodin our first visit.  Could it be?

No, this is not the most recent iteration of Raksha Golden Cub from Mirrodin Original.  Instead we have a new kha, one that should not be taken lightly.  But if this kitty is not Raksha, then who does it be?  Who now represents (furiously, as you can tell) the equipment-loving, and mono-white tribe?  Who does this new leader think she is?

Indeed, this in no Kha at all, but a regent instead.  That would certainly explain the hostility in the flavor text, as Kemba must defend her rule often (at least one can presume, given that she her authority is not absolute).  If her tribe is to survive the harsh environment of Mirrodin, then Kemba, Kha Regent must offer something else for that three CMC.  But what, exactly is it?

Already a 2/4 for three mana, Kemba needed a kick, but most anything would suffice.  This more than suffices, it super-suffices.  Producing even one 2/2 Cat creature token would mean scoring 4 power and 6 toughness for 1WW.  Not quite a Sprouting Thrinax ratio, but very good none-the-less.   With multiple equipment attached, Kemba becomes a more affordable Grave Titan.  Not bad for one little kitty cat.  Let’s have a look at the complete Kemba, in all her cat glory.

While not a kha to be sure, Kemba is absolutely one thing: fit.  She is also very well equipped with a dagger, metallic staff, and mystical helm in addition to her standard-issue metal bikini.  No more a threat than Kor Spiritdancer (speaking of bikinis)  in Constructed play, this cat has two things going for it the Kor Wizard does not.  First, in limited she is not a dead card because a 2/4 for three is almost always a good deal.  Second, EDH fans everywhere must be drooling at the build possibilities (ah, if only Kemba were blue…).  Who wouldn’t like a 10/6 trample, lifelink general pumping out three 2/2 tokens each turn?  Not us, and probably not you.
