Rise of the Eldrazi Spoiler Wrap-up 4/1/10

Reddit

If ever there was a time to call one of these 'spoiler wrap-ups' mythic, today is the day.  WotC unleashed a furious barrage of  these past few days.  The Mythic rares of any set ore often leaked early to get fans like us excited about a new expansion, but this has been unprecedented.  A creature with the second highest converted mana-cost ever, the most green mana symbols in one casting cost, a possibly one-sided Wrath of God, and two planeswalkers to top it all off.   Not a bad few days for Magic the Gathering, let's take a look at these beauties.

Does this guys look familiar?  Ah yes, that strange dream a few weeks back.  Same CMC, same down ability, same.... okay everything else it pretty much completely wrong, not that anyone could have predicted him more accurately.  The reason is because Gideon works like no other planeswalker before him, he has no ultimate ability.  WotC decided to put the zero cost ability on the bottom, but that is nothing more than slieght-of-hand.  Gideon Jura has no ultimate ability.  Something about that is troubling, but we will get to it later.  For now, feast your eyes on white's newest walker, a great combination of power and utility.  Adding two counters will draw all the aggro possible from target opponent, while removing two activates a repeatable Vengeance.  Too bad planeswalker's abilities activate one per turn at sorcery speed, because GJ's work so well together.

Sarkhan was the subject of another prediction, one with mixed results.  But, one thing is very clear with our second (and final) planeswalker within Rise of the Eldrazi, nobody predicted this guy accurately.  If a person makes claims to, you have every right to stare them down as if they just stated women's basketball is a more pure form than the men's version.  These abilities are completely out there, not to mention Sarkhan is built to destroy himself!  Wizards explored the design space here.  Really explored the space, indeed!  It is all well and good to experiment from time to time, but allow a brief aside (read: rant) here.  Part of the power and majesty of planeswalkers were that they had ultimate abilities.  Game winning effects that took time to achieve.  Even Chandra Ablaze (regarded by most as the worst planeswalker yet printed) needs to be attended to, or your bread is toast.  Now we have two walkers that ramp to nothing, and one even ramps down until he dies of his own accord.  It may not seem like much now, but that missing piece will be noticed come April 23rd.

The answer to twin questions: what will 15 colorless mana get you, and what is the most powerful creature ever printed? When Emrakul was revealed, he made every other Eldrazi look weak and economical by comparison.  In fact, we should throw the word 'comparison' out the window for the rest of the paragraph in honor of this sky god come to life.  EAT (a funny if unintentional acronym) will win any game in which you are lucky enough to play him from your hand.  The abilities are without peer, but waiting until you have 15 mana to spare is pretty much suicide in any format outside EDH, so tricks should be used to get this fellow out more quickly.  The major drawback with Hypergenesis and Elvish Piper effects is that 'take and extra turn after this one' line disappears.  Too bad, but a 15/15 flying Progenitus should be useful anyway.  Speaking earlier about EDH, a closing question: In what EDH deck would Emrakul not be a must-add?

WotC's newest mythic is another leveler, and one of the best yet.  The problem here is saying 'one of the best levelers yet', is like saying 'one of the best N'SYNC songs'.  It's not really a compliment.  Certainly the ability to boast an 8/8 flying trampler on turn five is fantastic, but the mana consumption means turns three and four net you an upgrade to a pedestrian 4/4 flyer.  If your opponent is hiding a Doom Blade for once you hit level 8, your game might be all but lost.

Nothing is better than wiping the board and waiting for the debris to settle, revealing that you still have all your stuff.  All is Dust is an artificers fancy way of saying, I win the game my friend, so sorry.  Of course the express purpose of this mythic sorcery is to blast your opponent while keeping your Eldrazi from harm.  Not that they really need the protection.  There is a mythic feel to this spell that is unmistakable, and the way it slides around that whole indestructible thing is pretty cool too.  Good thing Darksteel Colossus is colorless.

People can fall in love with things that don't make any sense.  There is simply something that draws them in, and once drawn they are unable to escape.  For myself, that thing is big green stompers.  And Khalni Hydra is about as big and green as you will see.  In fact, it dethrones Primalcrux by having the most green mana symbols in one casting cost ever.  While that is not exactly the first attribute most players look for in a creature, I'm captivated.  You can bet I'll spend the next six months trying desperately to get this guy out for free as early as I can.  So in review, an well-priced 8/8 trampler with no protection from deathtouch, sweeps or any form of spot removal.  Damn I love this card! Sometimes love is truly blind.
