The Most Unique Cards from Universes Beyond: Doctor Who

Now that spoiler season for Doctor Who is over, why don't we take a deep dive into a few of the non-legendary singles. Here we will discuss the top 10 most interesting and unique cards from this set.

1. Displaced Dinosaurs

Displaced Dinosaurs

Starting with one of the most discussed cards from this set and one of the priciest cards at UNCOMMON, (Pauper EDH Players rejoice!) the Displaced Dinosaurs. This 5gg Dinosaur may not be Legendary but its effect sure is. It says, "As a Historic permanent enters the battlefield under your control it becomes a 7/7 Dinosaur in addition to its other types" This does not specify "Nontoken" nor "until end of turn". So, all those clues, treasures, food, and even Planeswalkers (Along with creatures and Sagas) will trigger this.

2. The Flood of Mars

The Flood of Mars

Next, we have an infectious creature that is sure to flood the board in no time, The Flood of Mars. With a mana value of 2uu and Islandwalk, whenever this creature attacks you can put a flood counter on a land or creature. Lands stay as their type but are also Islands (For that Islandwalk), and creatures BECOME a copy of this one! Now this is a Zombie Apocalypse!

3. Auron Soldier

Auton Soldier

Speaking of making creatures other creatures, at 4uu the Auton Soldier enters as a nonlegendary copy of any creature, is an artifact, and has Myriad! I'm sure you can think of some interesting interactions with this EVEN costed BLUE creature *Coughs in Gyruda, Doom of Depths*

4. Reverse the Polarity

Reverse the Polarity

QUICK! Reverse the Polarity! With this Modal Instant for a measly 1uu you can choose to either Counter all other spells (Goodbye Storm), Switch the power and toughness of all creatures (Cries in Doran), or sneak in an elimination whether you are the one attacking or someone is alpha striking someone else by choosing Creatures can't block this turn. You do not want to get caught off guard with this one.

5. Decaying Time Loop

Decaying Time Loop

Decaying Time Loop is a very interesting card, where it lets you wheel away your hand and draw that many cards for 3r at instant speed. But what makes it really special is that it has Retrace, meaning you can recast this spell whenever you want by discarding a land in addition to its other costs. Can we say Brallin, Skyshark Rider's new favorite Spell?

6. This is How It Ends

This is How It Ends

Endings are no one's favorite part of their favorite stories, but unfortunately This Is How It Ends is the name of one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Doctor Who as it tells this particular story. At 3b this instant forces a player to shuffle their creature into their library then they must choose to lose 5 life or do it to another creature they own. Which, funnily enough, they don't have to control, so if someone is playing theft it could be used politically.

7. Blink

Blink

Following up with this heartbreaking story, is the culprit. Blink is a saga that doesn't progress in a linear form. With a mana value of 2ub, chapter 1 and 3 are the first ability which forces someone to shuffle one of their creatures into their deck, and chapters 2 and 4 are the second ability that creates a 2/2 black Alien Angel Artifact Creature Token with First Strike, Vigilance and it stops being a creature until end of turn whenever an opponent casts a permanent. Whovians call these creatures Weeping Angels, as they resembled Stone Angels statues that look like they are crying into their hands.

8. Heaven Sent

Heaven Sent

On the topic of Sagas doing weird things, Heaven Sent costing only ur already seems fun. But what it does is even more wacky. Chapters 1 and 2 let you Investigate. Seems simple enough right? Well chapter 3 deals 1 damage to each opponent, then if one of them has 0 or less life, draw seven cards; but if this is NOT the case then you exile Heaven Sent and you can recast it this turn. A saga that just keeps looping itself by its own volition?

9. Midnight Crusader Shuttle

Midnight Crusader Shuttle

Lastly, we have one of 5 vehicles from this set. The Midnight Crusader Shuttle is a 3/4 for 4 with crew 2 that says when it attacks defending player either sacrifices a creature or you gain control of a creature they control (of your choice) and it's attacking them. This is the first time you've been able to steal a creature during combat with a vehicle AND have it come in attacking that person.

10. Barbara Wright

Barbara Wright

And the final card on our list, Barbara Wright that has a rather powerful keyword - Read Ahead. Read Ahead says "As this saga enters the battlefield, you can choose a chapter and put that many lore counters on it. Skipped Chapters don't trigger." Being able to skip ahead on ANY saga is incredibly powerful because a lot of sagas are "Balanced" because players have time to interact with them before their final chapter (and usually most back breaking ability) resolve. The fact that she is 1w helps, but she has Doctor's Companion so you can pair her with a doctor. Thankfully none of the Doctors have Black in their color identity; but that doesn't make her less powerful, just more restricted in what sagas she can see in the command zone. Unless you put her in the 99, you little villains.
