Roon's Tale - Null Moon

Reddit

You arrive at Issar Roon's study to find the thick oak door shut.  No sliver of light escapes the frame of the door leaving you to stare at the rough wood.  The tree rings create a spiral pattern in one corner, straightening to lines that extend the length of the door.  Metal hinges, the size of your fist, attach the door to its frame in four places spaced evenly on the left side.  The pins remain within the study, whether by design or security you cannot tell.  Dropping out of your reverie, you knock three times on the hard surface.  Low, muffled sounds emerge from behind the door, most likely that of the old man trying to work his way through the books strewn about his study.

Well hello there.  Come in, I suppose I have time to tell you a tale today.  I apologize for the shut door, but the cicadas have become a nuisance this year.

The old man backs away, allowing you room to enter his sanctuary.  Once you step within the shining light of the candles he shuts the door and shuffles over to one of the many bookcases that cover the surrounding walls.

What should I speak of today?  The Vodalian Merfolk?  The Phyrexian Belbe?  Ah-ha!  How about the Null Moon of Dominaria?

The old man's bony fingers run along the spines of books and tags of boxes before finding the object he is searching for.  Out of a dusty box, the old man draws a thick scroll.  Newer than the previous scrolls you've seen, this one appears to be able to withstand one actually reading it without crumbling to dust.

Mist MoonDid you know that Dominaria has two moons?  No, of course you didn't, but it does!  One is a natural satellite called the Mist Moon.  There is nothing special about the Mist Moon, but it is quite pretty when viewed on a cool evening from the Ekundu Mountains.  The other is an unnatural satellite that has been called various names throughout Dominaria's history.  The Glimmer Moon, the Null Moon, and when it was first created, the Null Sphere.

The Null Moon, as many historians call it, was built by the ever-ingenious Thran.  Originally, it was no moon, but a base near the Thran capital of Halcyon.  Designed to control the empire's artifact warriors, the Null Sphere played a key role in the Thran Civil War.

The old man rolls the parchment to the edge of his desk, revealing more text and what looks to be a blueprint.

When Yawgmoth set the Thran Civil War into motion, the Thran Alliance took control of the Null Sphere.  In the ensuing battles, the Thran Alliance's artifact warriors proved to be the only thing capable of withstanding Yawgmoth's corrupted Phyrexians.  Unfortunately for them, Yawgmoth took such facts with great displeasure.  Knowing it was the key to defeating his enemies, Yawgmoth set about taking control of the Null Sphere in the Battle of Megheddon Defile.

Over the course of the oscillating battle Yawgmoth was able to gain control of the Null Sphere.  He immediately put it to use, and turned the artifact warriors upon their creators.  With one vicious order, the Thran Alliance army was wiped from the battlefield.  After the use of a stonecharger to finish off any remaining survivors the Battle of Megheddon Defile had ended.

The battle had been won by his new creations, the Phyrexians, but Yawgmoth's troubles were just beginning.  Two more armies of Thran Alliance soldiers appeared soon after the Battle of Megheddon Defile to take back the capital city.  Yawgmoth knew he did not have a force sufficient enough to fight two fresh armies, and so, dropped multiple stonechargers upon them.  He planned to use the Null Sphere to neutralize the ensuing death clouds before they could reach Halcyon, but never had the chance.  For the operators within the Null Sphere sacrificed themselves to hurl the base into orbit around Dominaria preventing anyone from taking control of its power.

The old man rolls the beginning of the scroll closed, shifts the parchment, then once more rolls it open to the raised edge of his desk.

After the collapse of the Thran Empire, the true purpose of the Null Moon was forgotten.  As time passed, the moon slowly gathered white mana, giving it a glimmer in the night sky.  Races and tribes incorporated it into their lore, and it found a place alongside Dominaria's larger natural satellite.  But something as powerful as a Thran creation cannot remain inconspicuous forever.

As the old man's fingers roll the parchment for a third time, you find a familiar shape on the parchment, that of the Skyship Weatherlight.

Skyship WeatherlightDuring the end of the Phyrexian Invasion Gerrard searched for a way to defeat Yawgmoth before he could fully manifest himself within the plane of Dominaria.  Desperate, he drove the Skyship Weatherlight into the Null Moon.  His maneuver punched a hole in the moon, and released the white mana that had been building up within it for millennia.  To Gerrard’s dismay the blast from the Null Moon was not enough to defeat Yawgmoth.  He would have to continue his search or watch his home plane be devoured by The Lord of the Wastes, but that is not the tale I tell today.

The Null Moon survived, and still drifts across Dominaria’s sky.  Its glimmer is gone along with the white mana it had stored and a hole exists, but many of Dominaria’s races still view it as nothing more than another moon in their sky.

The old man’s weathered hands close the scroll, and roll it up once again.  A waved hand in the direction of the door indicates his wishes for you to leave.  Satisfied the old man added to his lore of Dominaria you make your way out of the study, closing the heavy door shut behind you.
