Hello happy Commander and multiplayer aficionados! I've got your sweepers in Red today!
It debuted with Earthquake and got Shatterstorm two sets later! We'll be looking at my favorite but not mean sweepers for Commander and multiplayer today, so no to Jokulhaups or Obliterate. Or Wildfire or Decree of Annihilation or Ruination either. Go away mass land destruction! This must be mono-red, so something like Desolation Giant is a no go. I usually run two or three sweepers in my brews.
This is a sequel to my last two Top Ten White and Black Sweepers (https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/abesargent-01242025-the-top-White-mass-removal-for-commander and https://www.coolstuffinc.com/a/abesargent-01312025-top-ten-Black-sweepers-for-commander).
Honorable Mention #1. (#18. Overall) - Scrap Mastery
This Living Death for artifacts for the same cost kicks off my list! Since it exiles you cannot answer it with indestructible tricks. Then they head to the graveyard, less issues with pushback by players. You can abuse the death or sacrifice of your artifacts like Mind Stone, Commander's Sphere and Mindslaver or just sac engines like Chandra, Spark Hunter, Makeshift Munitions or Goblin Welder to fill up your graveyard. It's less powerful than Living Death since most decks are deep in dorks. That's why it's here.
Honorable Mention #2. (#17. Overall) - Inferno AND Bloodfire Colossus
This used to be multiplayer instant classic costs seven to sweep everything for one less 6 damage to everyone and everything too. Note no restrictions are here like ground or flyers or anything else. All creatures and players too eat that 6. With damage increasers and multipliers just for your opposing stuff not you, this is amazing. You can easily hit everyone else 12 or 18 damage. This was turned into one more mana 6/6 Giant with a one red to sac and Inferno everything. Love it too since you can use it if the Inferno isn't needed and people won't play things like Consecrated Sphinx or mass token makers when it's on the board. There are also Bloodfire Pyroclasm and Tremor too.
Honorable Mention #3. (#16. Overall) - Exocrine
This three-cost to start 2/2 rare critter has X to start with. It ETBs with X counters, draw if 5 or more and then shoots all other dorks and players for what you spent in X. Love it much as a mass removal spell that survives with a big Tyranid toy. The more this sweeps and hurts players, the bigger it'll be!
Honorable Mention #4. (#15. Overall) - Gates Ablaze
This three mana sorcery deals damage to everything equal to your Gate count. It made Gates decks work by hitting for just three mana early and on the turn you cast it you should be able to deal that much damage if all of your lands are Gates, so on the 5th turn it should deal 5 damage, so it scales up. Love it much, you will too!! Embrace your inner Gates lover and run this today!!
Honorable Mention #5. (#14. Overall) - Fuel the Flames AND Volcanic Fallout
Next up are my two instant speed three-cost Pyroclasms with a boost. The first just printed in Aetherdrift is a splashable cost with cycling two in case you don't need it. The harder to cast Fallout is unable to be countered so it's worth the harder cost since you know it will resolve barring stack tricks like exiling them instead with Time Stop. Love this pair loads! See also Breath Weapon in Dragon brews.
Honorable Mention #6. (#13. Overall) - Slagstorms
These three mana sorceries that deal three damage to everything are next. The first one printed was Slagstorm that can either shoot all critters or players for three. Then Anger of the Gods will exile them if killed. The Suns can be cycled for three mana instead if not needed. Great stuff!
Honorable Mention #7. (#12. Overall) - Brotherhood's End
Our next card is this three-cost sorcery that can either shoot everything for three like the above ones, including planeswalker too, nice! Or you can destroy all cheap artifacts with a cost of three or less. Love that flexibility way more!
My main issue with that artifacts is that at Commander and multiplayer generally there are tons of folks with mana rocks that cost one, two or three mana. It's a bad feeling to hit mana rocks just to take care of someone cheap artifact they are abusing like Skullclamp or Lightning Greaves, so use this only to do so when it's essential for everyone. Just blow-up dorks and move on to other threats. Or else you could ruin friendships, not brotherhoods.
Honorable Mention #8. (#11. Overall). Earthquake
This X-spell is our final card before Top Ten and just our second X-Spell with just one to start. It's a classic that costs one to start and then shoots all grounded critters and players for that sweet damage. You can easily build around it by running few or no flyers yourself and Green's grounded stuff and others can be super great. I like this in decks with flyers like Boros Angels, red Dragons, Rakdos Demons or all three with Kaalia of the Vast. Love it, you will too, embrace the quaking goodness!!
#10. Subterranean Tremors
This X-spell one to start too like Earthquake also hits those grounded creatures too, but not their players. Then if you spend 4 or more? Sweep all artifacts too! Then if you spend 8 or more? Make a giant Lizard that size too! It's clearly created on multiplayer play. Love its flexibility.
#9. Molten Disaster
This two to start Earthquake might seem worse since it's another mana to start, although it still hits players again, but I get cha! But if you kick it for just one mana? It's got split second and pretty hard to counter or even exile from the stack. You can also kill players as long as you have more life plus they cannot gain life in response. You might prefer the flexibility of the Tremors above and swap them, I hear you. But I'd prefer uncounterable.
#8. Delayed Blast Fireball
This three mana to start instant is next, and again it's a Pyroclasm for everything but better since it doesn't hurt you or your stuff, just opponents and their stuff. Note it also hits them too. Then if you cast it exiled like Impulsive card draw in this color like Act on Impulse or its foretell you can deal 5 damage instead to all of their stuff and them too. Love this much early or later.
#7. Magmaquake
This instant speed X-spell is next! It's got a double Red to start, and then will sweep all grounded dorks like an instant speed Earthquake, but with the added ability to hit planeswalkers too, it's murder against them. The only issue, or good thing if your life is low, is that it doesn't hit players too. But if you want that instant sweeper for the most with planeswalkers too, this is the best Earthquake variant to my mind since it can be cast anytime, but you might prefer the Tremors or Disaster above. But this isn't my top hitting X-spell, that's next!
#6. Starstorm
Our highest hitting X-spell and the final card before our Top Five is this double Red to start instant speed thang! This hits all dorks, not just grounded ones. Then it won't hit planeswalkers, so you are swapping that for all dorks, usually the better sweepage, hence it hitting harder. It also has cycling too. Love it much!
#5. Mizzium Mortars
This two-cost sorcery that shoots a dork for four is next! You can overload it for six mana and then shoot all things you don't control for four instead of that one creature. That flexibility early or late is great, Nate. Love it much, I am sure you do as well, right? It's also a great fun thing for twice the mana of Delayed Blast Fireball but also twice the damage so that's why it's here and then the early game play is fine too.
#4. Chain Reaction
This deals to all creatures damage equal to the creatures count! Therefore, the fuller the board is the more likely this four-cost will sweep it! Love it, but sometimes you need to sweep and the board isn't full enough and stuff can survive and then unlike the previous one this hits your stuff, hence it just being one higher. There is a tension here since this wants you to fill the board to kill their stuff better but you'll lose your board. So run stuff like indestructible, or enablers like Heroic Intervention or protection from Red stuff.
#3. Chandra's Ignition
This five-cost sorcery will have your dork shoot its power at all opposing dorks and their controller too. Only you and your stuff will survive! This is ideal with a high-power Commander you can rely on running around. Note the creature deals the damage, not the spell, for protection purposes. So, for example a protection from creatures thing like Commander Eesha would keep you alive. Love it much, I am sure you do as well!
#2. Anzrag's Rampage AND Vandalblast
Anzrag's Rampage costs five and destroys all non-your artifact, then you exile from your library the destroyed number and drop a dork with haste and then return it to your hand. The 'blast costs one base at sorcery speed to destroy an artifact, and that's one fewer than Shatter but slower. Then you can overload it for five mana to destroy them all that you don't control. Love it loads to hurt mass artifacts, but that can really be unfortunate against mana rock players just so you can take out overuse of The One Ring and more. Don't do it unless needed. I prefer things like Into the Core for handling them usually.
#1. Blasphemous Act
Ah yes...#1 on the list and in your heart had to be this, right? This nine-mana sorcery with a shooting of all dorks for 13 damage each is massively good at board sweepage! Then the built-in cost reduction for each dork means it's rare that you'll actually rarely need that high mana for sweeping and the more it's needed the cheaper it'll be! It's also surprisingly cheap here at CoolStuffInc.com compared to other top sweepers in colors.
There we go! I hope you enjoyed this! What are your top sweepers?
