There have been a ton of cards worth talking about in Lorwyn Eclipsed. It's one of those sets where we see players coming back for certain staples. I wanted to discuss a few niche White cards that have slid under the radar or aren't held currently held in high regard.
Let's dive in!
Curious Colossus
Maybe it's the circles I'm in, but I've heard basically nothing about Curious Colossus. Maybe it's because it's a seven-mana investment, notably with ![]()
in the casting cost, but have we read this card? It's sort of a game ender, or at bare minimum it can change the tide of a game.
I play Dihada, Binder of Wills, and if this card came down during a game I would have to desperately find a way to sacrifice my creatures. The abilities on my creatures are my whole strategy. The strength of taking away key pesky game pieces from opponents cannot be understated.
Additionally, if your opponent hasn't already popped off with Scute Swarm, it shuts things down before the Swarm can proliferate and become problematic. It's also a permanent effect, applied when Curious Colossus Enters. If they destroy the Colossus, those creatures remain 1/1 Cowards. All you have to do is slap some trample on your creatures and it could spell the end for your opponent.
I'm not a fan of the fact the Colossus only targets a single opponent at its hefty mana cost, but that's probably my only complaint. It's also a 7/7 for seven mana. That's plenty already. If this card were not Mono-White, I think they might have given it Trample, which would make it see much more play. Or maybe they were afraid it would be too good?
Flock Impostor
Flock Impostor is a really exciting card. A Creature with Flash, Flying, and Changeling is interesting! It could go into any White typal deck that wants a flyer, but the real reason I like this card is the Bounce effect. It's not as good as a Flicker effect, but being able to bounce a creature back to your hand at instant speed to avoid an exile effect or destruction effect screams versatility.
Beyond saving a Creature in peril, if you have a creature with an Enters trigger you want to double up on, Flock Impostor has you covered. I love a card that can interact with someone else's board when I want it to, or can gas up my own turn.
I would have loved this card to be a pseudo-Restoration Angel sort of situation for one mana less, but that would be asking for too much, perhaps. Restoration Angel is already so incredible.
Kinbinding
I've heard some murmurings about Kinbinding. A few people have caught on to the strength of this card. It's so insane. You just have to run it In any token deck running White. It's a pseudo-Craterhoof Behemoth/Moonshaker Cavalry. Pumping your team equal to the number of Creatures that entered under your control this turn is simply incredible. Even making five tokens that turn makes this an insane +5/+5 boost to each of your creatures!
Notably, Kinbinding isn't really as good as Craterhoof because of its inability to suddenly pop off. It needs more set up and doesn't give anything trample. It costs significantly less than Craterhoof at ![]()
![]()
, so It's the sort of thing you must be strategic about. Consider, this would be insane in a Commander deck like Eowyn, Shieldmaiden that is constantly making Trampling Hasty Knight tokens!
Kinsbaile Aspirant
Speaking of Eowyn, Shieldmaiden, Kinsbaile Aspirant would be incredible there. It's not a Human, but it gets buffed alongside the Humans she makes. Honestly, giving it a little buff in a Kithkin deck might be a good early game strategy.
Even though it's not really in the color pie for White, I think this card would be so much better with either Haste or Trample. Being able to attack through with a huge creature on a turn you put a bunch of other creatures into play would be so worth it for
mana or even ![]()
if you don't have Kithkin to behold. I'm not 100% sold on it, but I think this card is cool.
Kinscaer Sentry
I was so surprised by how little conversation I've seen about Kinscaer Sentry. A 2/2 for ![]()
with firstrike and lifelink is good all by itself, but a card that lets you cheat out Creatures is amazing! Attacking with a big group of tokens can pull big creature cards from the hand, getting around their inflated casting costs. I don't see how this goes poorly in most situations. Even attacking with four creatures will get you something worthwhile.
It's a shame you it has to attack to get its trigger, though. You'd likely have to buff it to protect it, but it's still so good early game. And maybe even getting one trigger off it is worth it. I'm so hyped to try this card and find out.
Personify
Having another Ephemerate for ![]()
is pretty good. Making a token is nice for typal strategies, but it's mostly just instant speed protection and flicker, which is really good. I think Personify will absolutely become a staple for Flicker decks. Not much else to say about it other than I'm impressed.
Rhys, the Evermore
Giving a creature persist until the end of the turn at instant speed is insane for![]()
. Any destroy effect is mitigated by this card. It's also a 2/2 for ![]()
which is just a good rate. I'm so enamored by that alone, but it keeps going!
It can remove the -1/-1 counter from Persist for
and tapping itself. It can only be done at sorcery speed, which is fair, but it's so good in Shilgengar, Sire of Famine. It can remove finality counters, -1/-1 counters, and any other type of counter!
Conclusion
Did you see any cards here you'd play in your upcoming decks? Let me know! I'm @Strixhavendropout on everything including BlueSky.
