Ultra-Budget Commander with Banon, the Returners' Leader

Reddit

Hello and happiest of days to each of you! For today on Tuesday, I am giving you my next Budget Commander Brew around Banon. Typically, I create the decklist on Monday and then write it up on Tuesday and then get ready for the brew. Usually, these budget brews are about twice as long to build, since I have to know the price of each card. But the Monday I am writing we haven't had internet for around 15 hours or so when I am going to build the brew, and I certainly will be unable to load pictures or easily check prices too. I also cannot look to even see what the Budget of the Last Article that I need to come down from is. My phone is mostly down too, since we are very far from stuff and will be very slow too and I had wifi calling enabled and more...but hey, what else am I going to do without the internet - it's pretty boring stuff. I am assuming I have a budget of $31.12 which was one previously loads.

The idea of my budget brews is to have the cheapest Near Mint card here at CoolStuffInc.com. Then I need to come in under the previous one's budget and I take this seriously since I've been unemployed, so most of my budgets have been under $40. Get ready for the budget loving good stuff!

Banon, the Returners' Leader

This brew is built around Banon who costs me two mana for a 1/3 that lets me play dorks that went to my graveyard this turn from anywhere save in play to get replayed and then when my stuff swings I can spend a mana to discard and then draw - great rummaging here to fill my graveyard and then get my card draw loving on!

Mana, Ramp, Lands

Our budget is at $9.41 for my commander, 12 ramp cards and 17 lands.

Eternal Dragon
Angel of the Ruins

Let's start with this pair of classic flying seven-drop Plainscyclers for two with five power. The Dragon can be brought back to my hand in my upkeep for five mana and no additional stuff from the graveyard so he's great! Then the Angel has a 7 toughness and then when it ETBs you exile two opposing artifacts or enchantments great removal on a stick! I tossed in more too!

Now let's turn to budget and good size and cost Mountaincyclers like a pair of six-drop beaters with evasion. Ruin Grinder has menace and then when it dies everyone Wheels - great here! Then the 6/4 Oliphaunt has the classic trample and then an attack trigger to double pump and trample-ize another dork.

I tossed in the cheap duals, the uncommon Rogue's Passage that'll give our dork unblockable for the turn which is pretty keen here with the swinging of my stuff, and then all of the cheap cyclers and Ash Barrens, then Drownyard Temple can be brought back with three mana tapped, so it's great to discard and then recur.

Normally I'd do answers next in my non-budget brews, then card draw, then synergies and backup wincons and then finish with stuff that's for our brew in order after securing my mana base. We'll do that in that order. Next up are answers!

Shredded Sails
Radiant's Judgment

Now let's turn to removal and answers! This cycling removal duo is first! The common Red one will shoot a flyer for four killing many likely or an artifact too for the same mana as Shatter or cycle for two. Then the three-cost White common will destroy higher power stuff and then cycle for two if not needed.

Jiwari, the Earth Aflame can be cycled for X and three red to start and then Earthquake all grounded stuff. Great and you can recast him after with Banon. Then the three-cost White sorcery Dismantling Wave will destroy one artifact or enchantment for each foe, or them all if cycled for eight!

Rout
Mizzium Mortars

The mass removal of this pair is next. The five-cost former Commander Classic bulk rare sweeps with no regeneration all dorks but at instant speed for two more mana - totally worth it! Then then six-cost overload will shoot each opposing dork for four damage or just the one if you've got the need to kill now. Great stuff to end this fun section on!

Card Draw

Cost - $20.53

Change of Fortune
Book Devourer

Let's turn to the card draw and when my Commander is heavy in it I need it less here. The sorcery four-cost one is amazing here since you'll discard and then draw all of the cards you've discarded this turn! Nasty just generally all up and down the block. The 4/5 trampler with a six-cost turns combat damage into a discard and draw your hand. Note it's may.

Conspiracy Theorist has an attack trigger like our Banon for himself and then when you discard those non-lands you can get a free exile and then cast -that's may, so it's not required. Dismissive Pyromancer taps with one and discards and draws. Then you can tap and sac for three to Lightning Blast a dork for removal too.

Fiery Encore
Decaying Time Loop

Now let's finish with this spell duo. The Storm one-costs five, you discard and draw and then shoot a dork or planeswalker equal to its cost. Then the retrace four-cost instant will discard and then draw that many - great here!

Faithless Looting is a buck, should I toss it in?

Synergies and Win-Cons

$0.75:

$0.69:

$0.49:

$0.35:

$0.20:

Total - $26.90

Charming Scoundrel is just a buck here as is Magus of the Wheel!

Gau, Feral Youth
Cyan, Vengeful Samurai
Quintorius, Field Historian

Now let's turn to synergies and backup win cons! The two-drop is the latter with a Bear size and then when it swings you toss a counter to grow it. Then in each of the end steps, not just yours, you can shoot each foe for damage equal its power if something was moved from it! Then the seven-drop White guy with double strike and a 3/3 size has a built-in cost reduction for each dork, and then when stuff leaves your graveyard grow it in size too. Then the Boros five-drop uncommon will turn things that leave your graveyard into a 3/2 Spirit being made and they are pumped in power while you control it!

General Leo Cristophe has a smaller 2/2 size but the five-cost will ETB for a Sun Titan trigger but just dorks. I also tossed in the Titan too. Then the two-drop Red uncommon Ivora, Insatiable Heir will grow when you discard and then when it ETBs and smashes face you'll make a Blood token for the digging!

Magmakin Artillerist
Enterprising Scallywag
Brallin, Skyshark Rider

The three-cost 1/4 good for blocking body has cycling for two and then when you do you ping each foe. Then your discards will shoot each foe for one damage each - great here, then the two-drop Bear size one will in your end step make a free Treasure for ramping if you have descended this turn - easily done here. The legendary Hill Giant one in size and cost will turn discards into one ping and then pump its size too with a counter! It does both.

Fun Discard Stuff

$0.39:

$0.29:

Total Budget - $31.13 - ONE Cent over! Good stuff!

Decree of Justice
Sevinne's Reclamation

Now let's turn to fun discarding and support. The cycling three to start and then X will make X Soldiers and then at instant speed for chumps or wins. The three-cost sorcery with flashback for two more can Sun Titan one thing and then if flashed back two things. Great to discard early if needed for the right card!

Collector's Vault was just printed and costs two, taps for two, loots and then you'll also make a Treasure for the looting. Jalum Tome, printed way back in the second set ever, drops for three, and then taps with two too and then Loots one. Love this colorless Looting duo here!

Marshal's Anthem
Sunblade Samurai

Let's finish with these two enchantments. The first costs a base four and then has multikicker for two and then recurs that many dead dorks and pumps them while on the board too! Then the five-cost 4/4 enchantment dork with vigilance can be channeled for two life and a basic Plains for the ramping. Love that pair loads!

And there we go! Ready for my brew?
