Building Koh, the Face Stealer in Commander

A Little Mono-Black Control and a Little Ability Copying and a Little Self-Sac too with Koh, the Face Stealer

Hello and happiest of days to you all! Today is the last day I have for an Avatar Commander, but I haven't spent much time with the Jumpstart set. today let's embrace a fun and interesting Mono-Black dork just printed here too!

Koh, the Face Stealer

This six-drop on-curve 6/6 Shapeshifter and Spirit ETBs and then you can exile another dork, ending it forever. Then as other stuff die you can also exile them too, from our foes to ours too. Then I can spend a life to copy it's activated and triggered abilities like Solemn or Sakura-Tribe Elder, and taps like a Birds, but not keywords like flying. Only the last one is copied.

I like this leading Mono-Black Control, with Koh as the control! Then a little ability copying and then bunches of self-sac stuff too to copy and trigger other stuff and such too. The self-sac stuff will trigger it for our stuff too. Make sense?

Mana, Ramping, and Lands

Let's get started with this trio of good artifacts and dorks for folks! That three-drop Elk will sac for three to ramp two! Great here with copies. Then that one-drop rock taps and sacs with two to tutor a land to our hand! Any lands, like Coffers or Yawgmoth. Nykthos and more! Then that four-drop mana rock taps to sac a dork for making three mana, not bad there! It can also save you from dying if you would do so once. Note that's not to life loss but anything like milling or Thassa's Oracle.

Next up are mana-dropping or mad tapping stuff. The Darkness Crystal drops our Black stuff and then when something dies by our foes can be exiled here, not necessarily and then you'll gain 2! Then you can tap it for six to toss one exiled with counters on it out and tapped with us. I also tossed in the win-con for Black dorks cost reducer Monument. Nyx Lotus ETBs tapped and then taps with nothing to make Black mana colors of mana in the combo of devotion! Then Radiant Lotus taps and sacs rocks this time for three mana which is a big ol' burst of nasty stuff.

And now some fun lands I grabbed and snagged. Realm of Koh taps with four to make a 1/1 saccing possible 1/1 Spirit that cannot be blocked or block save by Spirits. Then I tossed in tons of flip lands. Havengul Laboratory taps for colorless, then with four to make a Clue. Then we can flip it if we sacked at least three Clues then you can reanimate something when it does! Then when it dies you can flip this back and keep it up. Phyrexian Tower can also sac a creature to make two mana!

Now this duo is next! The Planet arrives tapped, and then taps with two once at 12 size at sorcery speed to sac a dork and draw its power and then lose two life too. Then that Black tapping legendary land can be tapped with one to give our legendary stuff fear!

Midgar, City of Mako costs three to sac a rock or dork here too and then draw two. Then Accursed Duneyard taps with two to regenerate any undead thing! From Zombies to Spirits to Wraiths.

Fountainport is awesome since we can tap it with two to sac a token for a card, with three to pay a life for a 1/1 Fish token and then four for a Treasure. Eumidian Hatchery keeps adding counters until it's big enough and then death triggers into many 1/1 dorks. Then Secluded Starforge taps with five to make a 2/2 Robot and then with two to tap our rocks at sorcery speed to grow a dork in power by those tapped! Nice for twice!

And now we'll see our thesis here. This two-drop enchantment arrives with a Clue and a life loss too. Then each upkeep do the same. Then as we sac stuff on our turns we can pump with counters on one dork that swings. Then we can give it lifelink for the turn too! Then that fun three-drop on curve 3/3 taps to sac a dork for its cost in mana! Then that four-drop 2/4 arrives and sacs a dork to make its power's cost in Treasures! Then we can spend three and sac X artifacts to reanimate something - great right? Right!

The eight-drop 6/6 flyer Archon of Cruelty arrives or attacks with a card drawn and three life gained while a foe discards, loses it, and then sacs a dork or walker too. Then that fun two-drop colorless Toy dork 2/2 artifact Marvin, Murderous Mimic must be here too! He'll get the abilities of our dorks too that don't have the same name too, just like our leader.

Next up are these two Vees and creatures in uncommon spaces that make copies of themselves. The former flying four-drop 4/4 Vee with crew 1 is great since in our end step we'll get a copy for free if we sacked something our turn, and then with 8 they are all auto-copied. Then the latter Bear can tap with one at sorcery speed to make a copy after surveiling 1, and then sac something to keep it around, but it can be the copy too. Love them together to fill the board!

And now let's turn to some ways to copy stuff. The best here is the four-drop legendary artifact Lithoform Engine that taps with two to copy a triggered or activated ability too! And then three taps for copying a spell and then four for a permanent. I'm also running Rings of Brighthearth.

Dread
No Mercy

Next up are these two classic multiplayer shut downs. First came the four-drop enchantment will kill anything that attacks and deals damage to us, so? No one will! Then that six-drop feared 6/6 dork came next with the same ability to punch face.

And then next will be some sac to recur stuff like Victimize, Lich-Knights' Conquest, Hell's Caretaker and Blood for Bones. I also thought about Dread Return and Doomed Necromancer and even Tortured Existence and Malevolent Awakening too, although Oversold Cemetery had to be here. The rare five-cost sorcery will sacrifice tokens, artifacts or enchantments for that many recurred things - a bit of a win con outta nowhere. Then that four-cost 1/1 in our upkeep taps for nothing to sac and recur something too. I also tossed in the four-cost one to sac and recur two untapped too.

Next up let's turn to these two interesting Tutor takes on stuff. Transmutation Font can be tapped for nothing to make a Clue, Food or Blood. Then we can tap it with three to sac three artifact Tokens of different names to Tutor an Artifact in our hand at sorcery speed. Then the eight-drop on-curve Razaketh, the Foulblooded with two evasions in both flying and trample is next! You can pay two life and sac a dork for no mana or tapping over and over again to Tutor a card too our hand - nasty!

That X cost spell is a bit of a win con since when it resolves, each foe's life total drops by it, and then we gain how much was lost, not X, just as a heads up. Like Koko and the Gray Merchant here too. Then that fun six-drop 6/6 machine is next! He arrives and with an ability to replace draws instead with exiling the top card of our library, then spend three mana over and over again to draw seven! Then pay one to swap what was exiled to draw, and then we lose that much life too.

Next are these fun synergies. Yahenni, Undying Partisan is great to copy with a sac into indestructible, and then when a foe dies, we can grow this with great counters too. Then the flashing enchantment Dictate of Erebos is a better Grave Pact since it arrives and then smashes people's positions, but I didn't have space for it too.

And now we've got targeted removal, ideally on dorks with artifacts too, like Meteor Golem, Duplicant or the Gearhulk. The best is the flashing 5/3 five-drop above, since it's a Murder that's instantly so folks cannot play around and it'll mill someone three too. Then the same cost 3/3 flying menace also ETBs and then kills too! Here though, they'll lose three life.

Avatar of Woe is an eight-drop at most, but easily two mana 6/5 feared dork ran multiplayer for ages. You can tap it to destroy, not bad to use with Koh too. Then the three-cost enchantment Attrition will sac a dork for a mana instantly for taking out a nonBlack dork too. Nice for twice, right?

Next up is mass removal! That five-drop 3/2 can either Murder a dork or Infest their owner. Note that stuff is normally me too, but not here! Ditto that six-drop 6/5 dork that arrives and Infests all other stuff here too, more than the Eliminator and then as they die you can force them to lose 2 life per if you don't exile them with Koh. Then that five-cost sorcery will swap all in play dorks with ones from other places too. That's a fast and nasty win con when timed right and you used sac stuff to fill it up.

Card Draw

The four-drop indestructible God with 5/6 size and devotion to Black can turn deaths to card draw if you spend two life. That's a may, though, so not if low on life. You can also spend mana to sac and Weakness stuff too. Then that six-drop planeswalker with six loyalty also turns deaths of our creatures into card draw. Then she can +1 to make a 2/2 Zombie and -4 to have everyone Barter in Blood to clean out stuff and get triggers too. Those count as sacs too on our turn.

This three-drop legendary Ayara, First of Locthwain has an ETB trigger for her and other Black dorks to drain a life from foes. Then you can tap her for no mana to sac a Black dork and draw, also good to copy. Then the Nightmare Dread Presence is next. When a Swamp arrives, we can draw and lose a life or Sorin's Thirst something as removal or player kill too.

The on-curve 8/8 flying Demon Vilis, Broker of Blood force can spend a mana and turn two life into getting something -1/-1ed this turn. Then when we lose life from anything? Gain that much life! No brakes there. Then June, Bounty Hunter cannot be blocked if we've drawn at least two this turn! Then she can spend one to sac a dork for a Clue, so that's two death triggers this turn if both are used. Finally, Nyla, Shirshu Sleuth has an ETB to exile a dork from our graveyard to make its cost in Clues, and we'll lose life too. Then when all Clues are gone from our stuff we can bring back what was exiled to our hand. Good stuff.

There we go! I hope that you enjoyed this brew for the Mono-Black Koh Machine. It has tons of great and different avenues here to head down. We could toss in Grave Pact or Helm, All-Fates Scroll and Sheoldred, super-secret tech like Moonstone Eulogist or High-Society Hunter? Black Market?
