An Email from Nick

So we're getting more and more email and I figured it was time to begin sharing some questions and answers. So with Nick's permission here is his email and my answer.

Hi, I'm a semi new player not that new but at 16 its hard to have a long playing record. I have played for awhile mostly online from lack of people. I was wondering if you had any advice for some one trying to start playing in tournaments. I was planing to just start trying to find FNMs and work my way up. Let me know what you think :)

Hey Nick,

Trick here. Thanks for emailing us and watching the show! I remember being in your shoes. I started Magic a few years younger than you around 13 or 14 and I was real lucky – I was blissfully unaware of the competition of tournaments. I just played the game and went to Pre-releases. The transition to competitive play can be intimidating though. You’ve got the right idea though, FNM is a great place to start. Play in it for a few weeks and begin looking for other tournaments.

Don’t let yourself get discouraged. When I first began going to tournaments (and still to this day) I get really frustrated and down when I don’t win. But Magic is a tough game and it takes a long time to build skills and understanding in the game. If you play regularly and keep atop the game’s changing form, you’ll soon find yourself on the winning end more and more often.
