I can’t lie to you guys: This week was another very busy week IRL for me, and I wasn’t able to listen to any podcasts.

Sound off in the comments with your favorite shows of the week!

Format staples are my favorite shows and the shows I believe are the most important for someone interested in Magic: The Gathering and podcasts to be listening to week in and week out. You want these in your seventy-five.

Limited Resources #93 – Default Settings

Running time 1 hour 8 minutes

  • Show notes:
    • This week on Limited Resources, Marshall and Jon talk about your default settings. That is, what your base mode of operation should be in limited Magic. Only after understanding what the default settings are can you figure out when to stray from them appropriately. We also do a clan update, and read a story from Ryan about a play he saw at Card Kingdom a few weeks ago. Thanks for listening!

    • We take a peek at the interesting UBW “Night Shift” decks starring Gravitational Shift that took 8th and 9th at SCG Pittsburgh.
    • We also briefly mention that Aaron Forsythe gave the official nod to the Modern format at SD:CC and makes Overextended less likely to be official for the near future.

  • Show notes:
    • This week, Joey and Bigheadjoe are joined by the big winner of the weekend, Gerry Thompson, to discuss his historic back-to-back wins at SCG Pittsburgh!

The Sideboard

The Sideboard includes shows that may or may not record every week but are quality podcasts that you may be interested in. At a minimum, I will provide the show notes, but in the case of better-than-usual episodes will provide recap or commentary. You don’t run them in every deck, but they are often a great metagame call.

    • This episode, our guest is CJ Shrader, L2 from Atlanta. He’s got a judge conference coming up. You should go. Also, now we know what it takes to become a L3 Judge. Riki helps us cover the checklist and explain some of the rationale behind it. A few crazy-weird rules questions later, we find ourselves reading a great response to our last episode sent to us by the amazing Pete Jahn. It’s an awesome show, and we’re glad to have you join us. Send us your questions: judgecast@gmail.com, or find us on Facebook.

Judgecast #32.5 – Women in Magic, with Lindsey Brown

Running time 19 minutes

  • Show notes:
    • In this short interview, Sean interviews his wife Lindsay about her perspective on Magic, judges, and how the game can be more accessible to women. Some of the interview questions were blatantly stolen from the guys over at RedSiteWins in their interviews with their significant others (http://redsitewins.com/2011/08/09/2286/). We’ll look for more opportunities to bring in women who judge Magic as future guests, so stay tuned. Enjoy!

The Mana Pool #191 – Bigheadjoe and the Mechanics

Running time 1 hour 59 minutes

  • Show notes:
    • We are joined this week by the highly entertaining Bigheadjoe of Yo! MTG Taps and formerly of SCG Live. He fits right in as one of the dorks, and I think you’ll enjoy having him on to take Mike’s place this episode. Hold out until the end to hear an announcement from Joe about his new wrestling podcast.
    • We begin with Brian’s experience at a recent FNM, followed by a massive bout of nostalgia. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I remember it was pretty awesome. Then we have a nice discussion about the M12 Event Decks, FNM promo cards, and have a bizarre example of M12 print runs. Blood Ogre, Angel’s Mercy, Garruk’s Companion, Child of Night – in that order, first four cards of all three packs I opened on the air. What the hell?
    • Oh, and we finish the episode off with a nice big discussion about our favorite mechanics, a topic Dirk came up with a long time ago that we’re finally getting around to. Yeah, we’ve been putting it off for at least a couple months.
    • I want to apologize for my (Chewie’s) voice doing the Max Headroom thing this episode. It starts around a third of the way through, and it lasts the entire damn episode. I have no idea what caused it, but since it’s just me and I wasn’t speaking as much as usual this episode, I just let it go. Sorry again, hope you can make it through.

Stick around because we’re also taking a look at results from Nationals around the world to keep you up to date on the latest developments in Standard. Also, we got very drunk towards the end. Like, really drunk.

Voice of Seraphim #31 – Always a Bridesmaid, Never a Bride

Running time 1 hour 11 minutes

  • Show notes:
    • Welcome to Episode 31 of the Voice of Seraphim: Daydream Believer. The Voice of Seraphim is your source for all the news and information related to Magic Online and the Seraphim Clan! In Development

Shows in development are newer podcasts. I will keep you guys up to date on new shows as they arrive on the scene, at a minimum providing show notes and possibly providing recap and analysis (I'm more likely to start writing about new shows once they've made it through five episodes and have begun to hit their stride). Consider these shows the cards you play with for the first time at the prerelease: You are excited to try them out but no one is sure how much play they will see.

Fatal Flaw #3 – Day of the Dead

Running time 1 hour 48 minutes

  • Show notes:
    • This week we didn’t have a lot of playing going on so we decided to focus on cards instead. We discuss color choice and player personality: Why do some players enjoy certain colors and not others? Are there benefits to staying with one choice vs. playing the color-field?
    • After a visit to the local card shop we picked up some random gems that we share. We also give you the skinny on the history behind our podcast name.
    • I (Aadel) share my Mono-Black Smack legacy deck that I built and have been tweaking for the last 6 months. We break it down and discuss some of the experiences it has encountered.
    • Then we ramble for about 20 minutes at the end.
    • I have no idea whether the messing around on Audacity helped the audio quality or made it horribly worse.
    • Jay’s blog that we mention can be found here. You can find our deck-lists there.

Public Enemies #9 – Substitute Troll Fills Tiny Shoes

Running time 1 hour 11 minutes

  • Show notes:
    • Tangent and Dr. Jeebus are joined by Chris Lansdell from Whores in Motion to discuss Jay’s absence, Chris bailing on his original podcast idea, Tectonic Edge promo cards, M12 Event Decks, and more!
