Nine Throne of Eldraine Decks for Nine Days of Standard

Reddit

Nine days more. Nine days more of seeing Teferi, Hero of Dominaria on turn five or Goblin Chainwhiler on turn three. Nine days until an all-you-can-eat Food token buffet. Nine days more until Standard rotation, the arrival of the Historic format, the release of Throne of Eldraine. Nine more days until my favorite day of every year; new five-set Standard, day one.

To celebrate the demise of Nexus of Fate and other obnoxious cards while simultaneously celebrating our new Fae and Knight friends from fairytale land, I am dumping my crazy deck ideas for the new Standard upon you. At the time I am writing this, we have 158 out of 269 Throne of Eldraine cards spoiled. These lists will be missing some cool cards that are currently unknown. Some of these ideas will fail miserably. Some might be good. Overall, this article is a celebration of imagination gone wild. My hot combos and ideas haven't been given an ice bath by Teferi, Time Raveler yet. They still could be the next big thing.

Deck #1

Sometimes a great idea presents itself.

Irencrag Feat
Sundering Stroke

In the right time and the right format, this play can be gamebreaking. When I need something else to dump the mana into, you have Bag of Holding and Cavalier of Flame (they make a nice combo themselves). If you want to deal more damage directly to your opponent, consider targeting your own Chandra, Fire Artisan to point more damage at the opponent's face. Bonecrusher Giant might be insane. If the 2 damage effect kills a good amount important cards in the format, this brute might be found in every single red deck.

Deck #2

I want to know the joy that is a one-sided Timetwister, and you get that for putting a mere twelve hour counters on Midnight Clock. Fortunately I have an Izzet shell lying around that abuses the proliferate mechanic to help me achieve such a feat. Once Saheeli, Sublime Artificer uses the [-2] ability to turn a Servo token into a second Flux Channeler, the deck can easily proliferate a dozen times in a turn. Runaway Steam-Kin makes the mana you need because each proliferation adds more and more counters to the little guy. The deck can win with large attacks from Servo tokens and giant Runaway Steam-Kins, but in my beautiful dreams we win by targeting our opponent with Shock over and over and ultimating Chandra, Fire Artisan while flying through our deck with Midnight Clock. We could run out of Blue mana while going off, and Guild Globe is a potential fix that triggers Flux Channeler and Saheeli, Sublime Artificer.

Deck #3

Here is out first appearance by Once Upon a Time, the controversial "free" spell from Throne of Eldraine. I play a lot of best-of-one on MTG Arena, and anyone who cares about this sort of thing knows the shuffler in that format favors certain hands and land/spell ratios in your deck. I am very curious how Once Upon a Time affects best-of-one deck-building on MTG Arena, and I plan to start off by shaving a few lands from my lists. Once Upon a Time may also change the need for dual lands. No aggro deck wants to play a guild gate to make the mana work and Once Upon a Time might make a more basic mana base viable. I will gladly try a spell that helps me curve out with my aggro decks more often.

Robber of the Rich
Questing Beast

These are the two creatures that I want to see in action. I don't know how impactful Robber of the Rich will be. You might exile a land and get brickwalled for the rest of the game. On the other hand, this could be Thief of Sanity with haste. Questing Beast looks like a slam dunk to eliminate planeswalkers and run right through hordes of Zombie tokens from Field of the Dead. I believe these cards will live up to the hype.

Deck #4

These knights are on a holy quest to make 2/2 humans for two great again. I love a good tribal strategy, but I am not sure if playing some dorks and some lords to pump them will be good enough. The equipment is the X factor for me. We haven't had good equipment in Standard in a while, and I may be underestimating the impact that Steelclaw Lance and Embercleave can give. This mana base scares me, even with Tournament Grounds. I may never want to play an aggressive multicolored mana base without Once Upon A Time for the next two years.

Deck #5

Mono-Blue Tempo and it's annoying Curious Obsession play patterns are rotating, but this deck remains to drive us crazy. Once Upon a Time may be at it's very best here because the card helps find key creatures like Nightpack Ambusher and counterspells like Frilled Mystic and Hypnotic Sprite. Wildborn Preserver looks great for this style of deck, giving the fox-rider's controller more power in the late-game.

Deck #6

I have a feeling we haven't seen all the pieces of this strategy yet. Cards like Banish into Fable, Emry, Lurker of the Loch, and Dance of the Manse hint at a deck built around enchantments and artifacts, but this doesn't feel complete yet. Still, I want to make something of Emry, Lurker of the Loch in Standard and this is a fun starting point. We have the Karn, the Great Creator combo with Wishclaw Talisman. Karn, the Great Creator's static ability turns off the Wishclaw Talisman so you get a three mana tutor and your opponent gets nothing as long as your planeswalker stays alive. There are more copies of Wishclaw Talisman in the sideboard if you want to fetch them with the [-2] ability and run it all back again.

Karn, the Great Creator
Wishclaw Talisman

Oh yeah, you can also bounce Wishclaw Talisman with Teferi, Time Raveler or Banish Into Fable for further abuse.

Deck #7

There's a new food truck in town! Check out Oko and Korvold's pot pies from hell! This deck has too many new things going on for me to know what's good. Oko, Thief of Crowns is the only Blue card while Korvold, Fae-Cursed King is the only Red card. The deck could certainly pick a direction and stick with it, but I want to see how hard I can push a mana base with Once Upon a Time and Gilded Goose. This deck doesn't exist to get Feasting Troll King out of the graveyard early for free, but you could build in that direction. Instead I want to cast Korvold, Fae-Cursed King and then get Feasting Troll King back, drawing three cards and making a giant dragon in the process.

This deck probably needs its own article. I don't know where to begin explaining how Trail of Crumbs, Witch's Oven, Wicked Wolf and Gilded Goose fit together. Let's just say this deck is one big, spicy, synergistic meatball that may have more flavor to stir in because of cards that have yet to be spoiled.

Deck #8

Rankle, Master of Pranks might be the truth. In this deck all the modes can be good. Making the opponent sacrifice a creature while you only give up a Burglar Rat is a nice play. Making them draw a card only to force them to discard it with Burglar Rat is just as nice. Karn, the Great Creator returns to fetch the right tool at the right time, and if you don't know what to grab just get Wishclaw Talisman and keep tutoring until you have all the good stuff.

Deck #9

Get used to Golos, Tireless Pilgrim and Field of the Dead. The cards make a powerful duo that isn't going anywhere. What you may not see coming is the infinite mana combo lurking in this beauty.

Faeburrow Elder
High Alert
Theater of Horrors

The members of my totally free and totally public Discord server really outdid themselves on this one. Faeburrow Elder can tap for five mana if you control all five colors of permanents, and High Alert can untap Faeburrow Elder for four mana, netting one Black, Red or Green mana for each cycle. Theater of Horrors can take that mana and go face as many times as you like. Throw in Samut, Tyrant Smasher and you can make this play the turn you cast Faeburrow Elder. As if it were destiny, Niv-Mizzet Reborn can help you find all the combo pieces. If the dragon doesn't kill you, the combo may. Fires of Invention does more for the deck than Chromatic Lantern could, because you can cast Niv-Mizzet Reborn for free and then cast a spell you find with the dragon's ability.

From upgrades to existing contenders to wacky crazy waving arm-flailing tube-brews, Throne of Eldraine already offers something for everyone. This week we will see over a hundred new cards get revealed, but I already feel like I could gobble up these Food token brews for weeks and never be satisfied.

What did I miss? What cards and decks are you most excited to play on Throne of Eldraine Standard day one? Only nine days more...
