Reign of Jafar Set Review: Amber

Reddit

Hello all! I hope you guys are excited by the changes occurring in our game right now.

I'm not here to tell you how much I love/hate these new policies. I am here to give you my two bits of opinion on the Amber cards in our newest set. It feels like I've done a different format for each set since I started adding content to the land of Cool Stuff INK. So, this time I will take another angle. I'm not doing all the cards again, that was too long winded. I'm not ranking them, too opinionated and manipulative. This time I am going by the ones that made me think the most, for good and bad.

I can't tell you how many times I read and reread this card. The first thing I noticed was the Static Trigger of his ability. It happens as long as he is in play, no matter what. The turn he's played, turns when he sings, turns when he quests, turns when he survives a challenge. ALWAYS! I'm mostly an aggro player at heart and my first read was I can exert all my guys and then double quest like you can with You Came Back. My first misread. You Can NOT quest once the end step has started. Sad Face. Then I read it again later. My second take (also wrong) was I would be able to just ready all my little early lore gainers to save them from challenges. Then my only concern would be cards like Grab Your Sword and Be Prepared. Wrong again. Only characters that were healed get readied and to have that happen they need to be damaged without taking lethal damage. Sure, Daisy can use him but Lilo, no way. And what's the point of Bodyguard then? There is some fun with Mr. Smee, Lawrence, and Chi Fu in Steel as well as Mother Goethel, Mulan, and Wreck it Ralph in Ruby. Of course, the tricks with Christopher Robin and Bolt can be played as well. In the end, Goofy is no Rapunzel but does have some fun plays of his own.

Since the first Bogo came out I've joked about how they make his ability like a Buy one Get one sale. (Get it? BOGO). Well, they must have bugged my local store cause here it is. Sure, it only gets one if you have a bodyguard out there but you still get your one most of the time. The question is can you find the right amount of Bodies to guard without over guarding? I can see this in play for the early style aggro decks where we dropped a Lilo followed by Simba to insure we were safe for a couple quests. Back then we feared an early Be Prepared. Now that Simba can turn into a Readied Daisy Duck with an empty field on the Ruby side.

Singer 6 is huge, as we have learned from Prince Naveen. But I can find many situations where Singer 5 is enough and the extra ink it took was not worth it as well. Now Tiana gives us another dilemma. How many songs should we have? Given the high number of songs that also draw a card, getting to three or four songs on a turn is doable, but at what cost? Now our deck is full of songs but lacking in a way to win. I've seen too many song decks that end up stuck with a handful of cards without any useful play since there are no viable targets.

I'm lumping these two together since it's nice to see Amber, the home of Aggro, get some "burn" in it. I've almost always played the Bodyguard Donald Duck when I've wanted a Guardian since he basically does the same as these two. Both are worth looking at since we have all seen aggro decks get to 18 and then just run out of gas.

I've had daydreams about this one. Classic aggro has to love this card! Turn one Lilo, turn two Simba, and turn three Lady plus a Piglet. That is a step or two above the current lore curve. It isn't fancy but it does get you to hand dump a turn faster and lets you out race Be Prepared a little easier.

Remember, this list is about what grabs my brain the most. This card along with some other puppy support will tempt me into spending hours testing and grinding out some casual puppy deck. Probably not a tournament worthy but for sure it'll be fun and funny.

Just getting three cards from your discard for one song is good in itself. The possibility of playing one of them for free? Even better. Of course, making your ink curve small enough to insure the free card makes Singing for 9 a bit of Challenge. But someone will make the curve work. Maybe you?

Well I'm heading off to a family Vacation tomorrow so it'll be a few days until I can write some more. Of course if it goes well you won't notice the break at all. So, as always, Remember, the coolest Ink can always be found at coolstuffinc.com.
