Epic

Reddit

'Epic' was introduced in the Kamigawa block and it currently appears on a number of cards including Enduring Ideal and Endless Swarm.

702.47. Epic

  • 702.47a. Epic represents both a static ability and a delayed triggered ability. "Epic" means "For the rest of the game, you can't cast spells," and "At the beginning of each of your upkeeps for the rest of the game, copy this spell except for its epic ability. If the spell has any targets, you may choose new targets for the copy." See rule 706.9.
  • 702.47b. A player can't cast spells once a spell with epic he or she controls resolves, but effects (such as the epic ability itself) can still put copies of spells onto the stack.

Translation:

  • 702.47a. Epic, in game terms is actually two things. The static ability is that you cannot cast spells for the rest of the game, once it becomes active. And then the delayed triggered ability is that during the beginning of your upkeeps for the rest of the game, you copy this spell.
  • 702.47b. Not being able to play spells does not mean you can't play abilities.
