Everything Revealed at the MagicCon Vegas Preview Panel

Reddit

This past weekend was MagicCon Las Vegas, with roughly 25,000 players and fans descending upon Sin City for three days of fun.

Among the festivities, Wizards held a special Preview Panel on Friday. As has become a tradition for events such as these, several early looks at upcoming sets were shown off.

This time around, we got to see art, cards, and additional insights into three sets: Marvel Super Heroes, The Hobbit, and Reality Fracture. The showcase was densely packed with all kinds of sweet stuff and today I'm going to cover it all.

The Hobbit

The bulk of the panel focused on The Hobbit, the upcoming Standard Universes Beyond set slated for an August 14th release. This serves as our first look and shows off several familiar sights, settings, and even cards from the world of J.R.R. Tolkien.

The Latest Cards

Things kicked off by showing a series of cards and art pieces, showcasing the return to Middle-earth through the story's progression.

The reveals started with the introduction to the Dwarven Company in An Unexpected Party. The Dwarf tokens that this creates are especially fun, as eagle-eyed fans may notice the return of the "Tolkien" flavor type line.

Thorin, the company leader, appears here as Thorin, Mountain-king. This new legend is perfect as a game-ender for all your favorite Equipment-based decks.

To celebrate the wood elves who make up a part of the story, Wizards has reprinted Wood Elves once again in this set. This marks the first printing of this card into Standard since Ninth Edition rotated in 2007.

Several legends were revealed as well. Naturally, Bilbo himself were shown in a couple versions, such as Bilbo, Luckwearer and Bilbo, Thief in the Night.

We also got to see Tom, Bert, and William - the trio of trolls whom the Company comes into conflict with. Eventually, the dawn breaks and they turn to stone.

And speaking of stones, one of the core Artifacts of the story, The Arkenstone, was shown as well. The priceless heirloom of the Dwarves is sure to be a backbreaking card whenever it's used in any game it appears in.

Gollum makes a return once again as well, alongside the Ring of Power. Only this time, the Ring is far less devilish, being used as little more than a tool for invisibility by Bilbo throughout the story.

As auch, the Ring is depicted in a much simpler form as My Precious. Riddles in the Dark depicts Bilbo finding the Ring and attempting to hide it from Gollum as he seeks to make his escape from Goblin Town.

Finally, as the story reaches its climax, the Company confronts Smaug the Magnificent. This powerful Dragon acts as the main threat and antagonist to the story and is represented in all his majesty through an equally strong card. Get ready to see this one at tables everywhere in the coming months.

Special Treatments

In addition to showing off several new cards during this panel, Wizards unveiled multiple special variant treatments you can find in The Hobbit.

The first of these is the Dragon Hoard card frame. This plays into the book's ultimate goal of facing the mighty dragon Smaug.

Observant fans may notice an interesting easter egg on the left side of this treatment for Smaug the Magnificent. One of the scales is missing, a nod to the missing scale that ends up becoming the downfall of this mighty dragon at the story's end.

The other special variant frame revealed was the Book Cover borderless treatment. This takes cards like Thorin, Mountain-king and The Arkenstone and gives them an appearance reminiscent of a well-read book. To many, this will be an all too familiar look, as many will have first read Tolkien's works through well loved and worn down books over the years.

The set's main headliner card was also shown off. As Smaug is one of the most iconic elements of this tale, Smaug the Magnificent gets the special treatment. Dubbed a "Gleaming Gold" headliner card, this version of Smaug is sure to be highly sought after, provided you can find one in a Collector Booster.

And, of course, what set release wouldn't be complete without the reveal of some Basic Lands?

Here, we get a set of beautiful full-art Basics featuring Thorin's Company as they journey throughout Middle-earth. Fittingly, they're called the Middle-earth Journey Basics and will be readily available in boosters everywhere.

In addition to the Middle-earth Journey Lands, a set of special Plains cards were shown off. Each of these depict Bilbo's home while he is away on his journeys and the various seasons that pass as he's gone.

It's unclear if we'll see versions like this for the other Basic Lands, but even if it's just this one-off batch, it's a brilliant idea all the same.

Each of the above variant treatments, excluding the headliner and the Middle-earth Journey Basics, will be available in Surge Foil as well. This fan favorite foil treatment returns once again for fans who may be eager to get their hands on some new ones for their decks.

Eternal Legal Goodness

Of course, what would a set based around the works of Tolkien be without some fancy special versions. After all, we saw plenty of them in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth.

In that set, we saw a set of special Elvish-language Sol Rings, in both serialized and non-serialized form. With The Hobbit, the non-serialized versions are confirmed to be returning. This time, however, they will feature Dwarven runes as seen on the Arcane Signet card above.

Several beloved cards from Tales of Middle-earth return once again in the form of special box topper cards. Much like the previous set, every Booster Box will come with one of these box toppers, bringing a cool new look to a number of cards from that first release.

One of these includes the infamously popular card The One Ring, a card so powerful that it was banned in the Modern format.

Unfortunately, the excitement behind this reveal was dampened as players noticed that the ring in this art, credited to Dan Frazier, looked awfully familiar. Indeed, it looked like a mirrored version of the Ring in the original Bundle Promo art done by Marta Nael, down to the shading within the Ring.

A message from Dan Frazier and Wizards of the Coast:

Initially, Dan's agent had claimed this wasn't Dan's fault. However, as the weekend went on, Wizards released a statement confirming that it was, with Dan stating how he traced over Marta's work. Dan has reached out to Marta to make amends and Wizards has committed to crediting her as well as compensating her for the oversight.

This news has disheartened many fans who love Dan Frazier's works, were excited for a cool new print of such a chase card, or both.

Despite the problems at play here, it is still awesome to see such a special card back once more. Hopefully it will put more copies into players' hands, provided this incident hasn't soured them on the idea.

Each of these fancy box toppers will also come in a Surge Foil treatment for the most die-hard of collectors and will appear in Collector Booster Packs.

Promos for The Hobbit

Things wrapped on The Hobbit with the reveal of several upcoming promo cards.

Players will be able to get copies of special promos for An Unexpected Party, Bilbo, Luckwearer; and Wood Elves via events at your local game store.

Additionally, a special promo of Tom, Bert, and William will be given out at Gen Con. Similarly, participants at the Magic Spotlight: The Hobbit event will earn copies of a special art version of Riddles in the Dark.

Reality Fracture

While The Hobbit is certainly exciting as ever, the real excitement for many longtime Magic fans was the initial looks at Reality Fracture.

The core story elements were revealed, with the Planeswalker Jace Beleren having successfully created an alternate reality Multiverse. This is his attempt at rebuilding the Multiverse without suffering, knowing only peace and tranquility.

He seeks to do so from his base in the alternate version of Strixhaven known as Hexhaven, a school which focuses on allied color pairs instead of the enemy ones Strixhaven is known for. At his side is Tam, an artificial being he created to aid him in his goals.

This "What If?" world will see various characters facing new alternate versions of themselves. To highlight this point, we were shown Chandra, Torch of Defiance returning to Standard alongside a Blue Chandra counterpart - Chandra, Chill of Compliance.

Here, this Blue Chandra is one whose father never died and she ended up being a part of the Consulate on Avishkar.

The main gimmick and breakthrough for this set is that if you come across one of these mirrored cards in a Booster Pack, you'll get the other half as well. Wizards wasn't even sure if they could make this work, but it seems that they eventually managed to find a solution.

It was also revealed that the Prepare mechanic from Secrets of Strixhaven returns once more in Reality Fracture. While much of the story takes place in the alternate school of Hexhaven, it's more of a backdrop and thus only Prepare carries over into this new set.

The card shown off is the one which will act as the headliner for the set: an alternate reality take on Emeritus of Ideation. Rather than casting the famous Ancestral Recall, you'll instead get to cast Ancestral Craving. This acts as a sort of Ancient Craving that just happens to be missing a few mana in its cost.

The final card shown was Stingcaster Mage, a sweet looking alternate reality version for fan favorite Snapcaster Mage. Mark Rosewater has famously stated that if they made Snapcaster today, it would likely be in Red, and now we finally get to see how that might look.

This special "Shattered Mirror" frame break treatment shows the way reality is breaking apart. Here you can see the original Snapcaster Mage in the shards alongside the new Creature. You'll also be able to find a special accented Facet Foil version in Collector Boosters.

I'd highly recommend looking up what else has been revealed from this set art-wise because it's looking truly epic. It's going to be the marquee set of the year and is sure to be one that you won't want to miss.

The set is scheduled for a release on October 2, 2026. While nothing was stated regarding when we'll hear more, we'll almost certainly get more information at the next Preview Panel at MagicCon Amsterdam in just a few months' time.

Marvel Super Heroes

Last but not least we got a small glimpse into Marvel Super Heroes, the next release coming on June 26. We previously had a substantial early look at this set back in December, so only a few cards were shown off this time around.

Mark Rosewater hung back to talk all about "Vision Design," as he is frequently involved with both Exploratory and Vision Design on many Magic releases.

However, this time, this time it showed Mark being a bit goofy, as he is known to be, and we were treated to several tidbits involving the Marvel character Vision. Several pieces of art were shown featuring Vision, as well as a few cards.

While some of the pieces of art didn't have associated cards revealed, we did see two. The main set card The Vision was shown off, providing an interesting Artifact Creature for players to build around. We also saw a card from the Commander decks titled Vision, Synthezoid Avenger which acts as a sweet card to pump up or dodge critical removal your opponents may cast.

While these were the only Vision cards shown off, another surprise remained for the Preview Panel.

The Mind Stone enters the world of Magic: The Gathering placed by the hand of Vision himself, Paul Bettany! #MTGxMarvel

— Magic: The Gathering (@magic.wizards.com) May 1, 2026 at 9:07 PM

Wizards surprised everyone by bringing out actor Paul Bettany, who played Vision in the various Marvel movies. They pulled out an Infinity Gauntlet statue - likely for an upcoming trophy - and had him place The Mind Stone onto the Gauntlet. After doing so, the final card of the panel was revealed: The Mind Stone itself.

This mighty Artifact continues the trend of the Infinity Stones being powerful mana rocks with The Mind Stone. Not to be confused with a similar Colorless mana rock Mind Stone, The Mind Stone is the White equivalent of The Soul Stone.

As The Soul Stone has gone on to be a staple of Commander tables everywhere, you can bet that this will see similar amounts of play. That's especially true if you're a fan of Flicker strategies, as activating The Mind Stone will give you a free one every single turn. If you know just how to make use of that, it can prove to be a powerful threat, as we've seen in the past on cards like Conjurer's Closet.

The most devoted of fans may even find a super fancy version appearing in Collector Boosters. Another special Gauntlet art depiction featuring Thanos appears here once again, as does a special Headliner Cosmic Foil for the most lucky players.

Conclusion

As is usually the case, The Preview Panel showed off an absolute deluge of awesome things. That's to say nothing of the other awesome things revealed over the course of the weekend as well.

Mark revealed as well during a panel that the game would go on sale via Secret Lair on June 1st for $25.
