Building Garnet, Princess of Alexandria in Commander

Reddit

While we are a bit removed from the Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set. There are still so many amazing cards that we can build decks around. I've been trying to build a commander deck from every viable commander card. One of my favorite decks has been Garnet, Princess of Alexandria. What I am going to do is give you some advice on making an incredibly fun, and powerful deck with this fantastic uncommon legendary.

Garnet, Princess of Alexandria

Garnet, Princess of Alexandria is a devious Simic legendary Human Noble Cleric with the lifelink ability. Now, the icing on this 2/2 creature is that every time Garnet, Princess of Alexandria attacks, you may remove a lore counter from each of any number of Sagas you control. Put a +1/+1 counter on Garnet for each lore counter removed this way. This means we are going to go heavy on Sagas.

When looking for Sagas, it's important to keep in mind the interactions they will have with the rest of the board. Wording is important. For example Battle at the Helvault can be a massive liability as it will exile a permanent per player. That means that if you run out of sacrificial fodder, it will eventually need to target Garnet. The name of the game here is to "lock" your Sagas onto their step that benefits you most. That will mean that Garnet, Princess of Alexandria is going to need to attack every turn.

To keep our Commander in the fight, we are going to need to find ways to keep blockers away from her, as well as keep spells from removing her. There will be Sagas that can help with this, for example Tale of Tinuviel can be used to make her indestructible. Artifacts will help a ton with this as well, with Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots keeping her from being targeted. Of course, Commander's Plate Commander's Plate is a good option too and can make her a lot harder to block too. Dolmen Gate is a card that puts in work a lot of work that will protect your attackers too.

Next up, we will want to find useful pieces to keep the advantage. These will be Sagas that give you extra mana and remove threats. The Saga creatures from Final Fantasy are extremely good at providing bodies and also massive amounts of utility. Cards like Summon: Fenrir will allow you to get extra mana out, plus have a decently powered creature. Summon: Good King Mog and Summon: Knights of Round will provide plenty of creature tokens and extremely effective attackers. Finally, cards like Summon: Yojimbo, Summon: Primal Garuda, and Summon: Ixion provide amazing removal options.

Summon: Bahamut

While we are looking at Sagas to support Garnet, Princess of Alexandria there are quite a few different cards that can keep your deck cooking. Ondu Spiritdancer allows you to copy each enchantment that enters the battlefield. Herald of the Pantheon will discount enchantment spells and give you a little life each time you cast one. Eidolon of Blossoms and Verduran Enchantress will keep you with cards in hand while you are pumping Sagas out onto the board. Power Conduit is a decent backup if something happens to your commander, as you can continue to keep a lore counter off of an important Saga. Finally, Heroic Intervention is a fantastic "ace up the sleeve" if any opponent has kill spells that could set you back.

While Garnet, Princess of Alexandria has a lot of flexibility based on what you want her to do, there are a few cards that will really just create a disastrous mess for your opponents. Fall of the Thran is a wild denial Saga that can effectively lock out opponents. As it destroys all lands (including your own) it isn't recommended unless you are readying up for the kill. However, you can absolutely abuse this to your advantage. If you also include Summon: Titan and park it on step 2, you can return all the destroyed lands in your graveyard to the battlefield tapped. If you also have Tiller Engine they will also come in untapped. That means you get to do whatever you want, until the game ends. Also, if you can pull off Summon: Bahamut you can just start indiscriminately deleting threats as you'd like.

As you can see, when I said Garnet, Princess of Alexandria was a devious Commander, I wasn't joking. Not only is she going to drive up your like total when she is working as intended, but the Saga cards you have out will be providing a ton of distractions while you set up your path to victory. Of course, the literal scorched earth combo is a hilarious threat that will catch your opponents off guard just once before you find yourself hard focused if you try it again. Overall, Garnet, Princess of Alexandria is extremely fun and absolutely worth the build. I can't recommend her enough!
