White has always been the color of discipline, teamwork, and coordinated battlefield tactics... which are three things the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles know a thing or two about. With Magic: The Gathering's latest Universes Beyond set, all of the heroic scenes like fighting side-by-side against the Foot Clan or rallying allies in the heat of battle, White's philosophy lines up nicely with the themes present in the TMNT set.
Mechanically, White in this set leans into +1/+1 counter production, token generation, and clever recursion plays that help keep your board presence strong even after things go sideways. Especially when things go sideways, rather. That makes several of these cards surprisingly natural fits for Commander decks that want to attack, rebuild, and keep the pressure on your opponents.
Today we're taking a look at some of the most interesting White Commander cards from the TMNT set and how they might find a home in your 99.
Time to sharpen the katanas.
Surgical Removal with a Political Exit - Splinter, Aging Champion
Even in his later years, Master Splinter still knows how to control the battlefield.
When Splinter, Aging Champion enters the battlefield, you destroy up to one target tapped creature. In Commander, that tapped clause matters more than it looks. Most threatening creatures eventually attack, meaning Splinter can act as a tidy piece of removal that also leaves behind a body.
But the truly politically interesting part of this card happens when Splinter leaves the battlefield.
When he does, you and another target player each draw a card. That little bit of political upside can go a long way in multiplayer games. Maybe you strike a deal. Maybe you reward an ally. Or maybe you simply soften the blow before bouncing or sacrificing Splinter for additional value. All this for three mana on a 2/2 body.
White decks that enjoy blinking creatures or recycling (or doubling!) ETB effects will find plenty to like here.
Cards that Synergize with Splinter, Aging Champion
- Ephemerate - Repeatedly blink Splinter to control opposing attackers.
- Teleportation Circle - Generate removal value every turn and get a mix of bad and good will from the table.
- Tataru Taru - This Dwarf Advisor's passive ability plays well with Splinter's card draw for opponents.
Instant-Speed Resurrection - Continue?
Few things swing a Commander game harder than creatures returning from the graveyard at the perfect moment. Continue? lets you choose up to four creature cards in your graveyard that were put there this turn and return them directly to the battlefield. That's a powerful effect that rewards careful timing and an eye for board wipes.
In practice, this card shines when someone wipes the board clean expecting to reset the game. Instead, you simply hit the Continue? button and bring (most of) your team right back. Even better, it works with sacrifice strategies and combat trades as well.
If multiple creatures hit your graveyard during a single turn, Continue? can instantly rebuild your battlefield.
Cards that Synergize with Continue?
- Wrath of God - Why wait for others? Clear the board and immediately rebuild yours.
- Out of the Tombs - Dipping into Black gives you self-mill... which Continue? can definitely profit from.
- Altar of Dementia - Sacrifice creatures for value and bring them back.
Combat Snowball Engine - Endless Foot Assault
If your Commander deck enjoys attacking, Endless Foot Assault can turn a battlefield into complete chaos... pronto!
When this enchantment enters the battlefield, you create one Ninja token for each opponent. That's already a solid start for go-wide strategies. Whenever you attack an opponent, you create another 1/1 Black Ninja token tapped and attacking that player. Over the course of several turns, that adds up to an impressive army.
But, the cherry on top is its Squad ability as it scales up the more mana you have. This being an enchantment makes it harder to deal with as board wipes for enchantments are rare... unless you run afoul against a player who packs Farewell in their 99.
White decks that generate extra combat steps, token synergies, or anthem effects will love the scaling pressure this card provides. Oh, and flavor-wise, it perfectly captures the feeling of the Foot Clan appearing from every shadow.
Cards that Synergize with Endless Foot Assault
- Cathars' Crusade - Turn every new Ninja token into a massive board-wide buff.
- Windcrag Siege - Double down on aggressive token production by triggering the attack condition twice with the Mardu mode.
- Anointed Procession - Multiply the number of Ninja attackers entering the battlefield.
Graveyard Combat Specialist - Leonardo, Sewer Samurai
Leonardo has always been the tactical and disciplined leader of the turtles, and this version rewards careful battlefield tactics cleverly.
Leonardo, Sewer Samurai brings double strike and the Sneak mechanic, letting you deploy him in combat situations like a surprise attack. But the static ability is where I'm in the market for him.
During your turn, you may cast creature spells from your graveyard if they have power or toughness 1. Those creatures gain a finality counter, meaning they'll be exiled if they die-but the ability still allows you to squeeze additional value out of creatures that have already fallen in battle. Two things to note here: there is no hard limit to the number of creatures you can cast on your turn (unless restricted by mana) and they need to only have 1 power OR toughness.
In Commander, graveyards fill up quickly. Leonardo effectively turns yours into a temporary second hand.
Cards that Synergize with Leonardo, Sewer Samurai
- Voice of Victory - Ensures you don't get bothered on your turn as you assemble your recursion engine.
- Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh - A zero-cost creature to combo with. You can also run Ornithopter if you're not in Red.
- Reveillark - Create loops of creature recursion and value.
Watch Dinosaurs Fly - Triceraton Commander
Among the White cards in the TMNT set, Triceraton Commander might be the most explosive for those who are Dinosaur inclined.
This creature scales with mana investment thanks to X in its casting cost, and it immediately produces a small army by creating multiple 2/2 Dinosaur Soldier tokens when it enters the battlefield. The real threat is on the second half of its text box though.
Whenever Triceraton Commander attacks, each Dinosaur you control gets +1/+1 and flying until end of turn. Suddenly that ground-based army becomes an airborne strike force. Given that Dinosaur decks tend to have already massive beasties, casting this creature for two and not getting tokens is still worth the slot in your 99.
White has no shortage of ways to produce additional tokens, and Triceraton Commander turns them into a coordinated aerial assault.
Cards that Synergize with Triceraton Commander
- Anointed Procession - Double the Dinosaur army you create.
- Pantlaza, Sun-Favored - Hands down the best Dinosaur kindred commander.
- Mirror Entity - Turn your entire team into massive flying dinosaur finishers.
Co-white-bunga!
White's contributions to the TMNT Magic: The Gathering set feel right at home in Commander. Between token swarms, graveyard recursion, and cool combat triggers, these cards are what savvy combat strategists want in their decks.
Some of them help rebuild after a disaster. Others steadily grow an attacking army. And a few (looking at you, Leonardo, Sewer Samurai and Continue?)-give your creatures another chance to finish the fight.
Flavor-wise, they capture the spirit of the turtles close to a T - teamwork and the resilience to keep fighting even after you've been knocked down.
Which, if you think about it, is basically the Commander format in a nutshell. Excuse me, in a half-shell.
