Tarkir Dragonstorm: The Five Face Commanders & How to Build Around Them

Reddit

Tarkir is back, and the clans are roaring with new life. These five face commanders from Tarkir: Dragonstorm are more than callbacks - they're thematic engines ready to lead explosively flavorful builds. If you're into massive creatures, reanimation loops, or spell-copying trickery, there is definitely a legendary creature that offers power, flavor, and spicy deck potential. Let's break each one down - with the best card types to support their strategy.

Eshki, Temur's Roar

A 3-mana 2/2 that grows with every creature spell and rewards you even more when that creature is beefy? Yes, please. Eshki plays like a rhythm game: you drop a creature, she pumps herself; if it's got 4+ power, you draw; if it's 6+, she blasts every opponent equal to her power. And since her power keeps growing, that burn damage gets real scary, real fast. She naturally fits in a creature-heavy deck, especially with mid-to-high power creatures that replace themselves or come in at flash speed. Get her out early, and she turns every big body into card draw and a finisher.

Card Suggestions:

Felothar the Steadfast

Felothar is your stoic wall-commander with a secret: his 0/5 might hit harder than most dragons. He makes creatures deal damage based on toughness and gives them pseudo-vigilance by letting defenders attack. The kicker (no not that kicker)? His sac outlet draws cards equal to toughness and discards power - perfect for toughness-heavy creatures with low power stats. Abzan offers tons of recursion, tokens, and walls that suddenly become terrifying attackers. It's a tough-love deck with serious grind potential.

Card Suggestions:

Kotis, Sibsig Champion

Kotis is a graveyard lover's dream. Cast one creature per turn from your graveyard by exiling three other cards - simple, flexible, and powerful. Every time you do, Kotis gets bigger. He turns your graveyard into a resource and your value plays into win conditions. He's like Underworld Breach but for creatures! He's not as open-ended as Muldrotha, but the synergy is smoother - you want self-mill, low-cost creatures, and ways to abuse ETBs. His strength lies in consistent recursion and a snowballing threat you can't afford to ignore.

Card Suggestions:

Zurgo Stormrender

Zurgo traded his bell for... lightning? He's all about Mobilize, creating temporary Warrior tokens when he attacks. The twist? If a creature you control leaves the battlefield, you either draw (if it was attacking) or drain opponents. That means every token death, blink, or sacrifice becomes value. You'll want token makers, death triggers, and free sac outlets to cash in your board for draw, drain, and general mayhem. Mardu Aristocrats just got faster - and meaner.

Card Suggestions:

Shiko and Narset, Unified

A flying, vigilant 4/4 that gives you value every time you cast your second spell? That's peak Jeskai energy. Shiko and Narset copy targeted spells (think removal, pump, flicker), and if the second spell doesn't target, you draw instead. This opens up a flexible tempo shell - stack your turns with cheap instants and sorceries that always hit something or cantrips. The trick is to make every second spell matter twice as much. Bonus points for flashy responses and classic Jeskai nonsense. Oh, and lumping in some permission spells to save your scales is also part of the Jeskai Way.

Card Suggestions:

Five Stormy Paths to Glory

From draw-hungry walls (er defenders) to graveyard-casting zombies and second-spell storm triggers, these five commanders offer flavorful ways to wreak havoc on the battlefield. Each one has a clear identity and a satisfying strategy that can win in a variety of ways - and you don't need infinite combos to make them shine (but hey, you do you). Tarkir Dragonstorm is a flavor hit and many Magic: The Gathering players the world over are chomping at the bit to represent their clans.

Feeling that sinister Sultai itch? Check out my deep dive on Teval, the Balanced Scale, for another graveyard-centric spirit dragon from Tarkir: Dragonstorm who turns recursion into raw power.

Until next time - brew bold, play clever, and may your commander always survive the board wipe you definitely saw coming.
