New Capenna Tier Legendaries Tier List

Reddit

Hello everyone! I'm Levi from The Thought Vessel Show, and today we're revisiting Magic: The Gathering's take on the Mafia genre with Streets of New Capenna. The five crime families not only reintroduced the color combinations of Alara's shards into Standard but also brought us many fascinating legendary creatures. Today, we'll be ranking this batch of potential commanders in a tier list. As always, we'll start from the lowest tier, E Tier, and work our way up to the top, S Tier. While it's not easy to make it into S Tier, Streets of New Capenna actually has several commanders worthy of that rank. So, let's dive in - beginning with E Tier.

E Tier: Barely Usable in Commander

Falco Spara, Pactweaver

Falco Spara, Pactweaver - It feels strange placing a crime family boss at the bottom of this list, but this is somewhat thematic for the Brokers. While Shield counters are flavorful, other crime families just offer more value from a commander's perspective.

D Tier: Decent, But Nothing Special

Errant, Street Artist
Jaxis, the Troublemaker
Toluz, Clever Conductor

Errant, Street Artist - Designed for a niche strategy, Errant can copy a copy effect but lacks the ability to initiate the copy effect alone, requiring extra setup. Adding a color like Red could've enhanced this design, so D Tier feels fitting.

Jaxis, the Troublemaker - With an efficient copy ability for a single Red mana and a discard, Jaxis can be strong. However, Mono-Red offers better options in Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Feldon of the Third Path. Jaxis is solid in the 99 but lacks enough to shine as a commander.

Toluz, Clever Conductor - Toluz offers an interesting approach to mitigate Connive's downside, storing discarded cards in exile until Toluz dies. Unfortunately, opponents can easily disrupt this with exile or bounce effects, limiting its reliability.

C Tier: Cool, But With Drawbacks

Urabrask, Heretic Praetor
Mr. Orfeo, the Boulder
Ognis, the Dragon's Lash

Urabrask, Heretic Praetor - Best suited for the 99, this Praetor can be impactful early on with card draw, though having it in the command zone often paints a target on you from turn one.

Mr. Orfeo, the Boulder - A prime example of the trade-off between adding more colors and power. Compared to the mono-Green Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus, Mr. Orfeo falls short. Still, adding Red and Black for this effect has its perks for damage enhancers, evasion, and likelink.

Ognis, the Dragon's Lash - A haste-themed deck! While it's ironic that the treasures come into play tapped, I appreciate this design's potential.

B Tier: Solid, But Missing Something

Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second
Lord Xander, the Collector
Rigo, Streetwise Mentor

Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second - A Naya token commander that can swap 1/1 tokens for 2/2 cats or 3/1 dogs, making cards like Smothering Tithe more versatile.

Lord Xander, the Collector - Another iconic Grixis villain, Xander can cause significant card disadvantage for opponents when cheated out early. The deck feels like a mono-Black strategy but with added Grixis flair.

Rigo, Streetwise Mentor - Reminiscent of Edric, Spymaster of Trest, Rigo enables substantial card draw from 1-power creatures, with the main twist being access to White. While Edric likely still runs this strategy better, Rigo offers a fresh angle.

A Tier: Fun, Interesting Designs

Ziatora, the Incinerator
Queza, Augur of Agonies
Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer

Ziatora, the Incinerator - Our third-highest crime family boss, Ziatora excels at flinging creatures and generating treasure, a perfect fit for Jund colors.

Lagrella, the Magpie - Finally, a commander with mass exile that reverts on leaving! I love that you can target other players' creatures as well, adding depth to its versatility.

Queza, Augur of Agonies - A fresh take on the wheels archetype, Queza eschews red and leverages lifegain to mitigate life loss from cards like Glacial Chasm and The One Ring.

Cormela, Glamour Thief - A Grixis mana dork is unusual, but as a spellslinger commander, Cormela makes sense. Her ''going-away gift'' of an instant or sorcery on death is particularly valuable.

Evelyn, the Covetous - A unique twist on vampires, Evelyn introduces a new color combination to the archetype with flavorful, theft-themed abilities using collection counters.

Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer - Once a cEDH staple before Dockside Extortionist's ban, Rocco essentially allows any creature to be your commander. I've even seen it run as a hidden Norin the Wary deck, stacked with Cabaretti ETB effects.

S Tier: Trendsetters in Their Archetypes

Raffine, Scheming Seer
Jetmir, Nexus of Revels
Giada, Font of Hope

Raffine, Scheming Seer - Borderline cEDH-worthy, Raffine's Connive ability can support flyers, combos, and more, making it a potent choice.

Jetmir, Nexus of Revels - The ultimate finisher. Unlike most decks, Jetmir's deck typically saves him for the endgame, where he delivers his knockout punch as ''The Great Catsby.''

Giada, Font of Hope - Currently the top angel-typal and Mono-White commander on EDHREC, Giada recently received a reprint in Foundations, which could boost her popularity even more. A strong card, and our top S Tier commander for Streets of New Capenna.

And there you have it! These are the top commanders from New Capenna, ranked from E to S Tier. If you'd like to try out any of these commanders, you can find them here on Coolstuffinc. Until next time - happy gaming!
