The Top 20 Elementals in Commander!

Reddit

Hi folks! We've got another Top X list for you today, and today, it's for Elementals! There have been so many printed in Magic's history so I've decided to bring a full 20! We've got a lot, so let's get into it! There also won't be any honorable mentions (just a secret best #1, spoiler alert), if it doesn't cut it in the top 20, it's not good enough for me! There are some cards grouped together if they fit similar niches or are part of a cycle, though, so you've still got over 20 cards to look at here!

#20 - Solitude/Subtlety/Grief/Fury/Endurance

Solitude
Subtlety
Grief
Fury
Endurance

The free-spell evoke elementals from Modern Horizons 2 have cemented themselves well in 60-card formats and are decent in Commander. While the interactive ones like Endurance, Subtlety, and Solitude see play as free interaction in higher brackets, these 5 as a whole are just okay, in my opinion, but they still made the list!

#19 - Lumra, Bellow of the Woods

Lumra, Bellow of the Woods

Momma bear made the list and won't argue about it. She's big, she's useful, she's got utility, and you're totally surprised that she's an elemental, aren't you? For that reason alone, she's lower on this "Top Elementals" list, but she's still awesome as both an include in land-based decks and as a Commander of a massive land-count list too!

#18 - Maha, Its Feathers Night

Maha, Its Feathers Night

Continuing the trend of Mythic Mothers from Bloomburrow, we have Maha, Its Feathers Night. Check out the Bloomburrow story if you want to learn about Maha's history, or just jam it into a deck with a Goblin Sharpshooter or Toxrill, the Corrosive and call it a day. Maha is aggressively-costed as a 5-mana 6/5 with Flying, Trample, and a relevant Ward cost, and then on top of that, you're making your opponent's creatures small. What a nice little Elemental bird!

#17 - Wistfulness/Vibrance/Emptiness/Deceit/Catharsis

Wistfulness
Vibrance
Emptiness
Deceit
Catharsis

The mythic evoke Elementals from Lorwyn Eclipsed have made their way on to this list within less than a month of existing! They all can be evoked for two mana, and the color you choose will determine the ability you get! They're all flexible and can fit in most decks of those colors, however, you have to cast them with mana in order to get their abilities, which is why they're lower on this list than they could be. I personally think Vibrance is the best one, but what do you think?

#16 - Yarok, the Desecrated

Yarok, the Desecrated

We've got Panharmonicon in the Command Zone! Yarok is 5-mana 3/5 with Deathtouch and Lifelink, and doubles your ETB triggers for any permanents entering, even on your opponents' board! Use it with cards like Sire of Stagnation, Hostage Taker, and Agent of Treachery for a particularly mean deck, or with cards like Eternal Witness, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, and Wood Elves for a fast, ramping deck!

#15 - Muldrotha, the Gravetide

Muldrotha, the Gravetide

The cooler of the Sultai Commanders on this list, Muldrotha lets your play one permanent of each type (including land) from your graveyard on each of your turns. In Sultai colors, you can do some nasty things with this, from using Buried Alive/Entomb early on to setup a great later turn, to just replaying the Maha, Its Feathers Night and Toxrill, the Corrosive that your opponents worked so so hard to get rid of. Redundancy is good, folks!

#14 - Animar, Soul of Elements

Animar, Soul of Elements

This is a colorless Commander. If you don't believe me, then sit across from an Animar player as they use Animar to cast every Eldrazi you've heard of and then some. From the very first precons in Commander 2011, Animar has protection from all the colors it isn't, it gets bigger whenever you cast a creature spell, and it discounts your creatures by how big it's gotten! It combos with so many cards in the format and it has so much versatility from its colors. Play cards like Peregrine Drake, Forgotten Ancient, Artisan of Kozilek, and Hydroid Krasis for maximum power!

#13 - Mulldrifter

Mulldrifter

The original Blue evoke elemental from Lorwyn, Mulldrifter is an iconic card, even still seeing play in formats like Pauper! It's also the reason that some newer cards exist, spawning out Wavesifter, Nulldrifter, and Hulldrifter, and probably also the inspiration for Thought Monitor and Cloudblazer! ETB flyers that draw 2 cards in some way are powerful in their own right, and Mulldrifter is iconic!

#12 - Maelstrom Wanderer

Maelstrom Wanderer

The first Magic card that had Cascade printed on it more than once, Maelstrom Wanderer is a great late game finisher, giving you two other possible threats alongside it while also giving all of your creatures haste! This popularized other cards a few other cards having multiple instances of cascade, from Zhulodok, Void Gorger and Call Forth the Tempest having double Cascade to Apex Devastator having quadruple Cascade! Cascade is one of the most fun mechanics in the game, so play this Elemental!

#11 - Ancient Greenwarden

Ancient Greenwarden

For the longest time, I had this card confused with Ulvenwald Hydra, as a 6-drop Green card for a landfall deck. When you actually read it though, you realize that it's a Crucible of Worlds with hands that your opponents will catch. This big boy also doubles land-based ETB triggers, which elementals have plenty of! You'll see a few later in this list, too, but just know that guy is worthy of the list!

#10 - Nyxbloom Ancient

Nyxbloom Ancient

If this card doesn't get a reskin in Marvel Super Heroes for Groot, we riot harder than the Gruul ever could. This tree triples your mana for any permanent. No, not plus 2. TIMES 3. Have a Forest? ggg. Have a Sol Ring? Six Colorless! Don't even get me started if you have two. It's not legendary and the replacement effect stacks, then you get NINE TIMES THE MANA. WE ARE GROOT.

#9 - Bane of Progress

Bane of Progress

Wrath effects are plentiful in Commander. Mass Naturalization though? On a creature that attacks? Bane of Progress will fit in any Green deck, provided that you're not on a heavy artifact/enchantment strategy! It will almost always work in your favor too, so it's an easy include if you're looking for another generally good creature to put in your deck. You can even clone it if you need to keep someone at bay (looking at all you Voltron players out there).

#8 - Ashling, the Limitless/Mass of Mysteries/Horde of Notions

Ashling, the Limitless
Mass of Mysteries
Horde of Notions

Want to play every Elemental you can? Want to have a good 5-color Commander to do it with? Play any one of these! Put the other two in the 99 if you want! In my opinion, they're all interchangeable in a Typal Elemental deck, but I'll probably always go with Ashling, the Limitless. Did you know that you can reduce that Evoke cost even more? Urza's Incubator and Herald's Horn come in handy here!

#7-4 - Incandescent Soulstoke, Flamekin Harbinger, Risen Reef, Smokebraider/Flamebraider

Incandescent Soulstoke
Flamekin Harbinger
Risen Reef
Smokebraider
Flamebraider

These next 4 are what I call the "Auto-Includes". These cards fit into almost any elemental strategy and I'd include them in any typal Elemental list! Incandescent Soulstoke is the premier Elemental Lord that also Sneak Attacks any Elemental! Flamekin Harbinger sets up your next turn with a tutor for any Elemental card on top of your deck, including non-creature Kindred cards! Risen Reef is an Elemental Coiling Oracle that turns all your other Elementals into the same! Finally, Smokebraider and their slightly stronger descendant, Flamebraider, are fast ramp spells for Elementals, which can also apply to abilities, like Horde of Notions ability!

#3 - Avenger of Zendikar/Phylath, World Sculptor

Avenger of Zendikar
Phylath, World Sculptor

In our third spot is the almighty Avenger of Zendikar joined by his legendary counterpart, Phylath, World Sculptor! Avenger is ultimately stronger, but they both make plants equal to the number of lands you control (Phylath specifies basics, sadly). Both of them also have landfall triggers (that you're totally doubling with Ancient Greenwarden) to make plants larger, and are great finishers in both Landfall and Elemental decks!

#2 - Omnath, Locus of... Mana, Rage, Roil, Creation, and All!

Omnath, Locus of Mana
Omnath, Locus of Rage
Omnath, Locus of the Roil
Omnath, Locus of Creation
Omnath, Locus of All

Rounding out the Silver Medal is Omnath! Omnath has 5 forms, each one with another color of mana added! Locus of Mana stockpiles Green mana as a Mono-Green Commander. Locus of Rage makes 5/5 Elementals and Lightning Bolts when it or an Elemental die. Locus of the Roil is probably the best for a typal Elemental deck, having an ETB and a Landfall trigger that relates to Elementals. Locus of Creation (my personal favorite!), can propel you extremely fast in mana with its landfall trigger, and Omnath's Compleated form, Omnath, Locus of All, stockpiles mana as Black mana and also draws an extra card each turn, potentially adding even more mana! They're all great as Commander options, try them out!

#1 - Ashaya, Soul of the Wild

Ashaya, Soul of the Wild

Ashaya takes home the gold medal today as arguably the strongest Elemental in the format (totally in my opinion of course, I welcome other lists!). Ashaya is as big as the number of lands you have and makes all of your creatures Forests in addition to their other types. This works with so many land-based strategies! It makes all of your creatures trigger landfall when a new one enters, since they're also forests. It's only one color, so you can slot it into probably any Elemental deck (you better be playing Green!). Try it out, Ashaya is awesome!

Tier 0 - Floral Spuzzem

Floral Spuzzem

If you've made it this far, I will bless you with the knowledge of Floral Spuzzem. Real pods don't use the oracle text box (minus the creature type of course), only the printed text box. Floral Spuzzem will decide if it wants to destroy artifacts or deal damage, and only Floral Spuzzem gets that choice!
