Dragons are some of the most fearsome creatures in basically any fantasy setting. From as simple as How to Train Your Dragon and Mushu from Mulan to Shenron in Dragon Ball or Drogon in Game of Thrones, dragons set the stage for being a crucial and important creature, both good and bad! Even one of the original RPG's, Dungeons and Dragons, has them in its name! Magic is no different, bringing some of the strongest creatures into the wonderful 100-card format of our game. Today, we're gonna be highlighting the Top 10 Dragons for Commander! We're also gonna skip honorable mentions today, but as usual, we've also combined a few that have similar vibes. Remember, this is my personal list, so if you have something to say about it, reach out to me on socials (@mattynewns everywhere)! I've got my own biases here, but overall, I think this is a great list. Let's get into it!
#10 - Summon: Bahamut
Starting this list off with Final Fantasy, we've got Summon: Bahamut. Bahamut is iconic for being one of the strongest summons in most of the Final Fantasy games and it shows well in Magic. Probably the only controversial dragon here, just based on EDHREC ratings, Summon: Bahamut is also the only colorless dragon on this list! As a colorless dragon, cost-reducing cards like Urza's Incubator and Dragonspeaker Shaman will work well with it. It's a Saga Dragon, which means that it's only around temporarily, but it packs a huge punch. The first two chapter abilities destroy any nonland permanent, the third draws two cards, and the last one hits each opponent for your total mana value of your other permanents! As a 9/9 flier, Bahamut is already hitting for a ton, but its last ability can straight up win you the game! In a dedicated dragons deck, you're likely going to have a ton of high cost permanents in play already, so you'll be able to dome your opponents for a ton. I personally have it in my colorless deck; it's just a generally great card to include! Try it out!
#9 - Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient
Next up is Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient! Coming from the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms: Commander decks, this 7-drop Dragon is designed to give you a ton of mana! When it attacks, you get to add X mana in any combination of colors, where X is your total power of your attacking creatures. That mana lasts for your whole turn, so you can use it post-combat too! By itself, it only adds 4-mana, but even that can cast a decent midrange creature. Klauth is a 7-drop though, so you're likely attacking with other creatures also by the time it comes down. Hopefully, it sees a reprint soon; we need more Klauth!
#8 - Dragonlord Dromoka
Dromoka first appeared in Fate Reforged, but it's much better form, Dragonlord Dromoka, released with Dragons of Tarkir. Since then, it's held its position as a strong protection dragon for your spells. It's a 5/7 with Flying and Lifelink for 6, which already has solid stats, but it also can't be countered! Most importantly though, it acts as a Voice of Victory as well. This means that you can include it in any ![]()
deck and it will benefit all of your spells. Oddly enough, Voice of Victory likely inherited the ability from Dragonlord Dromoka, coming from the same plane! cEDH and Standard players are quite familiar with how powerful Voice of Victory is, and putting it on an attacking dragon is no joke in the right deck!
#7 - Lathliss, Dragon Queen/Utvara Hellkite
Sitting pretty together on the lucky #7 slot are the duo of Lathliss, Dragon Queen and Utvara Hellkite! These both fit the same role of having your dragons create dragon tokens! Both make rather large tokens with flying for their abilities, and both are worth including in any dragon-themed deck. I probably wouldn't include them in non-dragon decks, although Utvara Hellkite at least makes tokens by itself, because it only requires a dragon to attack. It essentially doubles the amount of dragons you have (provided that they're all attacking). Lathliss, Dragon Queen creates dragons whenever another nontoken one enters (it has to say nontoken or else the game would end in a draw). Lathliss is great with our next entry, because even just dragons entering play can do a ton in the right deck!
#6 - Scourge of Valkas/Terror of the Peaks
Our next duo are a pair of dragons that deal damage whenever another dragon enters the battlefield! Both of them sitting at 5-mana, Scourge of Valkas will deal damage based on the number of dragons you have and Terror of the Peaks will deal damage based on the creature's power! Terror of the Peaks is especially nice because it counts all creatures entering, not just dragons, but it still pairs quite nicely with our token makers in #7. They both have different merit in various decks, but I would include both of them in a dedicated dragons deck!
#5 - Tiamat
Starting out our top half is the Chromatic Dragon of Dungeons and Dragons, Tiamat! Tiamat is a 5-color 7/7 flying Dragon God that ETB's to search for up to five other non-Tiamat Dragons and put them into your hand. Essentially, in a 5-color dragons deck, it's a 5-mana attacking Draw Spell for 5! Tiamat has recently gained popularity with the release of Tarkir: Dragonstorm, due to the printing of Dracogenesis! Dracogenesis is similar to Omniscience in that it lets you cast spells for free, but Dracogenesis has two key differences. The first is that it specifies Dragons and the second is that it doesn't restrict the free spells to your hand! This means that with Tiamat in the Command Zone, a Dracogenesis almost assuredly wins your game! With cards like Terror of the Peaks, Dragonlord Kolaghan, and Atarka, World Render, you can usually wipe out the rest of your opponents' life totals!
#4 - Atarka, World Render
Speaking of Atarka, World Render, next up is the Gruul Dragonlord from Tarkir from Fate Reforged! This Dragon is notorious for being a game-ending Dragon, since it gives your attacking Dragons double strike! While this may seem trivial and simple, Atarka is the basis for many different wins with Dragon-based Commander decks, and slots into the 99 of many decks well! In the Command Zone, it still commands two of strongest dragon colors, giving you access to ramp to play it faster and Red for the aggression and damage that will close out your games! Atarka would see play in basically all of the Dragon-decks we've featured here, provided that we're playing ![]()
!
#3 - Ancient Copper Dragon/Goldspan Dragon/Old Gnawbone
Fun fact about Dragons in the majority of storylines. They LOVE treasure! According to Scryfall, there are 18 dragons (at the time of this article and not counting Sidequest: Hunt the Mark) that have the word "Treasure" in their oracle text. Our #3 spot highlights what I believe to be the 3 best: Ancient Copper Dragon, Goldspan Dragon, and Old Gnawbone! Ancient Copper Dragon pairs well with Atarka, World Render, making treasures each time you connect based on a d20 roll. Goldspan Dragon makes a treasure each time it attacks or gets targeted by a spell, and it also doubles the amount of mana that each treasure makes! Old Gnawbone is similar to Ancient Copper Dragon, but it makes treasures based on any creature you control dealing combat damage! Each of these has the capability to generate tons of treasure, which will help pay for more and more dragons!
#2 - Ureni of the Unwritten/Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm
Unfortunately for some of us longtime players, Intet, the Dreamer was dethroned long ago as the premier Temur Dragon in Commander. Fortunately, though, Ureni of the Unwritten and Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm both hold that spot quite well, in both the 99 and in the Command Zone! Ureni of the Unwritten (from the Tarkir: Dragonstorm Temur precon) has a nifty trigger that cheats Dragon creature card into play whenever it enters or attacks. Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm makes a non-legendary token copy of any non-token Dragon that enters into play under your control, effectively doubling all of your dragons! Both of these have similar vibes in Commander, acting as big Temur dragons that give your more dragons. In the Command Zone, they can both lead a strategy of overwhelming the board, but in the 99, they basically act as full-on combo pieces, especially in the hands of our capable leader...
#1 - The Ur-Dragon!
The Ur-Dragon! Not to be confused with Scion of the Ur-Dragon, the literal actual Ur-Dragon has Commander's most busted ability, Eminence! This means that it functions in the Command Zone or the battlefield, and The Ur-Dragon's version of it discounts all of your Dragon spells by 1! Along with that, it's a 9-mana (so eight if it's in the Command Zone) 10/10 with flying and an insane triggered ability! Whenever one or more dragons you control attack, you draw as many cards as dragons that are attacking, and then put any permanent into play. On top of getting to draw cards the turn it drops by just attacking with other dragons, getting to cheat something (likely another big Dragon) into play is no joke. The Ur-Dragon takes the crown as the Number One Most Popular Commander on EDHREC, cementing itself in Commander Pods forever. Even through quite a few reprints, it's held a solid price over the years, and will probably need twice as many more reprints for it to finally come down, because it's that awesome. I highly recommend it if you wanna sling Dragon spells at your opponents. Give it a shot!
Thanks for reading!
