Weekly Sale Commander: Final Frontier

Reddit

Hi folks! Welcome to the Weekly Sale Column! This column will be aimed at showing you some cards on sale that could give you some new ideas for your lists. They will *usually* be Commander lists in Bracket 3 as well so you'll be able to play these in any Bracket 3 (or higher) pods. If you want to play in lower pods, just swap out the Game Changers for other choices and/or add more along with some other competitive combos if you want to compete with Bracket 4 and 5 pods! Remember that the weekly sale ends on Sunday night at 11:59 PM EST, so you have until then to get your cards ordered!

Tannuk, Memorial Ensign

Today, we bring you a bold voyage into the Final Frontier: Space! Tannuk, Memorial Ensign, our Captain (serving as the Kirk to our Enterprise) into this wondrous world of ramping out basic lands! This week's sale is all about basic lands, and Tannuk is a great captain when we're ramping out lands. Tannuk's ability reads: Landfall - Ping your opponents for 1. On the second time, you also draw a card, but no matter what, you're always pinging for 1. We've loaded this deck up with a billion different ways to ramp out lands into play along with other payoffs for landfall. Let's get into it!

The Continuing Mission

Our main goal in this deck is to get lands into play with some kind of payoff or pinger. We wanna whittle our opponents down, while also ramping so that we can build our board up. We're emphasizing basics in this list, so instead of cards like Farseek, Skyshroud Claim, and Nature's Lore, we're opting for cards like Cultivate, Rampant Growth, and Entish Restoration. We've also included some cards to recur lands from the yard (that's definitely needed more than you think!), like Aftermath Analyst, Walk-In Closet // Forgotten Cellar, and Wrenn and Six. Finally, there are plenty of ways to play lots of extra lands.

Oracle of Mul Daya

We've got Loot, Exuberant Explorer, Oracle of Mul Daya, and Mina and Denn, Wildborn. From just the recent Final (Frontier?) Fantasy set, we've also got Traveling Chocobo, Zell Dincht, and Gladiolus Amicitia. Having all of these ways to put extra lands into play is going to be important for our mission on this voyage.

To Explore Strange New Worlds

Horizon Explorer
Edge of Eternities has given us lots of new ways to help Tannuk shine, being from EOE as well!

To start, we've got cards that create the new Lander tokens. These tokens are the brainchild of the Treasure token and Rampant Growth. They are artifact tokens that you can pay two generic mana to sacrifice and search out a basic in play tapped. Unsurprisingly, they are great with Tannuk! Biotech Specialist, Dauntless Scrapbot, Horizon Explorer, Bioengineered Future, and Seedship Impact all give us Landers while also giving other relevant payoffs, so those are the kind of 2-for-1's we like in Commander.

There are also a couple Spacecraft worth playing here. Exploration Broodship is a Spacecraft with an easy access Station ability of the same namesake, letting you play additional lands once you've accrued only 3 charge counters. Once you've gotten 8, though, it becomes a 4/4 flyer that lets you cast a permanent from your graveyard once a turn by just sacrificing a land (which you'll have plenty of) in addition to its costs. This will be great for one famous snake named Sakura-Tribe Elder because you'll be able to repeatedly trigger your landfalls each turn by just using the land the Elder brings in to recast it next turn! Larval Scoutlander is the other Spacecraft we play here; this one lets you either turn one land into two, or even turn a Lander token into two lands, basically bypassing the cost of the Lander's ability before harrowing it away!

Finally, the true Explorer of Strange New Worlds, Icetill Explorer. This little 2/4 4-drop bug has so many great words on it for this deck. It's an Exploration. It's a Ramunap Excavator. It fills the yard up by milling a card when you play a land. It does it all! This card is going to be paramount to so many lines in this deck that you'll be able to pull off, be sure to pick this little guy up.

To Seek Out New Life and Civilizations

Icetill Explorer

Let's take a look at our payoffs for getting lands into play. We obviously have the king pinger himself, Tannuk. We also have Sabotender, Tunneling Geopede, and Spitfire Lagac. There are many more pingers, but these specifically hit EACH opponent. This way, you don't have to discriminate; you can just defeat all of your opponents simultaneously! Along with pingers, we also have some token generators. These range from Spingheart Nantuko and Scute Swarm to Omnath, Locus of Rage and Rampaging Baloths. Titania, Protector of Argoth is a great payoff for playing lands from the yard (also doing so herself) and both Avenger of Zendikar and Phylath, World Sculptor will give us good payoffs for playing lands after them, especially if we had a lot of lands at the time of them entering. Phylath is especially good for this deck because we want as many basics as possible for Phylath's ability.

To Boldly Go Where No One Has Gone Before!

Exploration Broodship

Let's talk about lands! In this deck, we're mostly playing basics! 24 of our 37 lands are basics. We have 5 fetch lands, 2 fetchable duals, 2 destroy-your-stuff lands, and one empty town. Of note, our two destroying lands, Dust Bowl and Boseiju, Who Endures, are great lands to recur to our hands and reuse, and Dust Bowl can even just be used to put lands in the yard when we don't have anything except a Crucible effect, like Ramunap Excavator. Ghost Town and Shifting Woodland are the odd choices here. Ghost Town gives us some extra landfall when we need it, we just have to bounce it on our opponent's turn. If you add a card like Burgeoning in this deck, then you could combo that quite well with a Landfall ability! Shifting Woodland gives us a way to use the cards in our yard without having to recur them, provided we have Delirium active, of course.

Live Long and Prosper!

Finally, let's talk about our Game Changers. This deck could have easily been a bracket 2 or less, but I like consistency in my decks, and most of my lists are B3. We've chosen Crop Rotation, Jeska's Will, and Deflecting Swat! Crop Rotation helps with an extra landfall trigger, while also finding Dust Bowl, Shifting Woodland, or even a Commercial District to help with our top deck. Jeska's Will gives us more steam in the early game or gives extra options in the late game. Deflecting Swat will help protect Tannuk from a timely Swords to Plowshares/Path to Exile or even keep our Avenger of Zendikar alive so we can trigger it more! As always, feel free to sub out any Game Changers for other cards you like. In this deck, Crop Rotation can be Sylvan Scrying, Jeska's Will can be Valakut Exploration, and Deflecting Swat can be Reiterate/Wild Ricochet! If you want to jump up to higher brackets, Zuran Orb is the key to most land-based combos. Here's a short, but sweet, list if you're looking for a few.

*inserts the Vulcan salute somehow* - Earn Spock's approval! (He won't ever approve, FYI, he'll just understand as your opponents concede to you ramping up faster than the USS Enterprise engaging)

Make sure you let your opponents know that resistance is futile and most of all: DON'T WEAR A RED SHIRT. Thanks for reading, see you next week!
