Hello everyone. Lorwyn Eclipsed is here, so it's time to take a look at some decks featuring cards from this new set. I have a few 3-color decks for you this week that you can use for fun against your friends or at your local tournaments. Let's get started.
Temur Meek Attack
We'll start things off with a deck that tries to break one of the new cards, Meek Attack. Let's take a look at the deck.
Temur Meek Attack | ECL Standard | Ayase, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (33)
- 1 Oviya, Automech Artisan
- 2 Fierce Empath
- 3 Prime Speaker Zegana
- 3 Spider Manifestation
- 4 Badgermole Cub
- 4 Bloom Tender
- 4 Famished Worldsire
- 4 Formidable Speaker
- 4 Llanowar Elves
- 4 The Wandering Minstrel
- Enchantments (4)
- 4 Meek Attack
While you have Meek Attack on the battlefield, you're able to put a creature that has a total power and toughness equal to 5 or less from your hand onto the battlefield. That creature gains haste, but it will be sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step. The perfect creature to put into play with this effect is Famished Worldsire. While it's sure to come into play as a 0/0, it can grow to immense size due to its devour land ability.
Famished Worldsire also brings with it some additional land cards, which normally will enter the battlefield tapped. However if you happen to have The Wandering Minstrel in play, all of your lands enter play untapped. So those lands that were just put into play by Famished Worldsire can be used to activate Meek Attack again, or to play other creatures from your hand, hopefully giving you enough power to attack for victory this turn.
Bant Merfolk Combo
Next, I have a Merfolk typal deck that uses a card that's been in Standard for a while to go very wide. Let's take a look at the deck.
Bant Merfolk Combo | ECL Standard | HelloGoodGame, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (22)
- 2 Adept Watershaper
- 4 Deepchannel Duelist
- 4 Deepway Navigator
- 4 Enduring Vitality
- 4 Mindspring Merfolk
- 4 Wanderbrine Trapper
- Instants (3)
- 3 Three Steps Ahead
- Sorceries (3)
- 3 Sygg's Command
- Enchantments (10)
- 2 Sheltered by Ghosts
- 4 Deeproot Pilgrimage
- 4 Seam Rip
- Lands (22)
- 1 Forest
- 1 Island
- 1 Plains
- 3 Cavern of Souls
- 4 Breeding Pool
- 4 Hushwood Verge
- 4 Temple Garden
- 4 Willowrush Verge
When Deeproot Pilgrimage is on the battlefield, you'll create a 1/1 Merfolk creature token with hexproof whenever one or more of your nontoken Merfolk become tapped. While this naturally creates additional creatures whenever you attack, you risk those attacking nontoken Merfolk being blocked and destroyed. This ability becomes less dangerous to use while you have Enduring Vitality, as you can now simply tap those Merfolk to create mana.
The ability to tap your creatures for mana becomes even better once you flash in Deepway Navigator. You get the option to use those creatures again for mana generation, but this might be difficult if you find your hand running low on cards. For those times, you'll want to cast Mindspring Merfolk, whose exhaust ability can be used to help refill your hand as well as putting a +1/+1 counter on each Merfolk you control (regardless of whether they are a token creature or not).
Grixis Omnithrone
The final deck I have for you benefits greatly from having Shapeshifters in Standard. Let's take a look at the deck.
Grixis Omnithrone | ECL Standard | Capricorn, aetherhub.com user
- Creatures (23)
- 1 Kirol, Attentive First-Year
- 2 Omni-Changeling
- 2 Staunch Crewmate
- 2 Trumpeting Carnosaur
- 4 Bloodletter of Aclazotz
- 4 Floodpits Drowner
- 4 Mischievous Sneakling
- 4 Taurean Mauler
- Enchantments (8)
- 4 Corpses of the Lost
- 4 Unholy Annex // Ritual Chamber
- Artifacts (6)
- 1 Mox Jasper
- 1 Thrumming Hivepool
- 4 Throne of the Grim Captain
In order to craft Throne of the Grim Captain into The Grim Captain, you must have it in play alongside a Dinosaur, a Merfolk, a Pirate, and a Vampire (or these creatures can be in your graveyard). Normally, this can be difficult to accomplish, but with the help of Shapeshifters, it's pretty easy. Doing this results in your four creatures being exiled, and you receiving The Grim Captain, a 7/7 creature with a host of keywords that help you win games quickly.
You can also get a boost for The Grim Captain if you happen to have Corpses of the Lost in play. This enchantment gives a +1/+0 boost to all Skeletons you control, plus it provides them haste. Since Shapeshifters have the Changeling keyword, they count as every creature type, and will therefore benefit from any bonuses provided to Skeletons, like this one.
Wrapping Up
Lorwyn Eclipsed brought us a lot of new cards and with those new cards come new strategies. These decks barely scratch the surface, so I'm sure to have a lot of new decks for you in the immediate future.
What do you think of these decks? Feel free to share this article with your friends anywhere on social media. And be sure to join me here again next week as I continue my search for innovative decks in Standard. I'll see you then!
