Hello and happiest of days to each of you!!! Today I'd like to give you my Top MTG Sets of an Expansion nature - not Core Sets. This is for limited, constructed, and casual stuff like Commander and Five Color. Ready?

Honorable Mention

Zendikar

Let's get started with this Adventure World with resonant concepts and then really hit it out of the park with the landfall mechanic as well. It gave us things like Expedition Map and Oracle of Mul Daya through Lotus Cobra today!

Stronghold

This second set of Rath Block is here not just for great good cards for tournament stuff here and there like Mana Leak and Mox Diamond, but beloved casual classics like Wall of Blossoms, Spike Weaver and Feeder, Volrath's Stronghold, Megrim, Grave Pact, Reins of Power, Horn of Greed, and don't sleep on Tortured Existence or Hermit Druid. See also Sliver Queen, the first Five Color dork and legendary leader too for Commander!

#5. Ixalan

Let's get started with this flavor-forward thing. It modernized Pirated and turned them into something major. It gave us the Dinosaur tribe still used today. It gave us Treasures a beloved casual or tournament thing. It's unique take on Vampires as Conquistadors is great too. It gave us tons of great cards too like Admiral Beckett Brass, Field of Ruin, Growing Rites of Itlimoc and Hostage Taker.

#4. Time Spiral

This was a love letter to me and my longtime player buddies and had the Time Spiral purple sheet with older things that were also now legal in their borders. I played this in draft and sealed, and at the prerelease opened a foil Sol'Kanar the Swamp King. It's also great with cards for casual like Draining Whelk, Stuffy Doll, and Saffi Eriksdotter.

#3. Invasion

This is the first set built around a mechanic rather than flavor other than, arguably, the poorly done graveyard-matters of Weatherlight. This gave us amazing gold-matters and an entire block of multicolored good stuff from Fires of Yavimaya to dominate Standard or Recoil for 5C and Absorb and Undermine to giving us the five Dragon cycle like Rith, the Awakener and more! It also gave us the beloved split card mechanic!

#2. Champions of Kamigawa

My favorite flavor-first set and 2nd favorite set overall is this winner!!! Please don't let the later bad stuff in the block distract you from this legendary-matters Japanese themed set. It's got the amazing Dragon Spirit cycle like Kokusho, the Evening Star; Azusa, Lost but Seeking; the all-formats classics like Sensei's Divining Top and Sakura-Tribe Elder, it had the first Cultivate with Kodama's Reach, the broken Gifts Ungiven, the color-shifted Ghostly Prison and Heartbeat of Spring, Hinder, a great 5C and Commander land in Forgotten Orchard - and triple Champions is a brilliant limited too. Don't sleep on this fun set!

#1. Visions

The first true block was Mirage. The first middle set was thus Visions and it modernized the era massively! It was the first set with playable cards at all levels! Fallen Empires was the first set with great commons, but this was playable everywhere at all commonalities rather than a few shout outs in previous sets! It also gave us ETB dorks - beloved now and then - like Uktabi Orangutan and Nekrataal. River Boa? Vampiric Tutor, Impulse and Fireblast in all formats! Ditto Tithe and Natural Order. This gave us Man-o'-War and beloved Desertion for multiplayer and Quirion Ranger for untapping your stuff and the awesome Relentless Assault. Undiscovered Paradise made landfall work. Prosperity made the first major combo deck of ProsBloom work and is a beloved casual card today. Creeping Mold was great removal, as was Crypt Rats and another combo and kindred enabler with Goblin Recruiter, Anvil of Bogardan, City of Solitude, Funeral Charm, Necromancy, Teferi's Puzzle Box, and many more.
