Dan Lanthier Vanquishes Grand Prix Vancouver!

Reddit

Over a thousand mages traveled to Vancouver this weekend to duke it out in the latest Modern Grand Prix. All eyes were on the west coast of Canada to see how Modern had evolved in the wake of Pro Tour Fate Reforged. Burn, Blue-Red Twin, Abzan, and even Amulet-Bloom Combo came out to play.

At the end of the Swiss rounds on Sunday eight remained including Pro Tour Gatecrash Champion Tom Martell and Pro Tour Avacyn Restored Champion Alexander Hayne, well known for his ability to win Grand Prix on his native soil.

The finals pitted Robbie Schmidt, who had gone undefeated with Affinity on Day One, against Dan Lanthier, piloting Blue-Red Twin- the very deck which won the most recent Pro Tour. Game one Schmidt's clockwork army worked, well, like clockwork and reduced Lanthier's life total in a timely fashion. Game two was another brief affair, this time with Lanthier's Ancient Grudge and Shatterstorm rendering Schmidt with no board.

Game three began with a sporting handshake between the competitors before Schmidt managed to play an Ornithopter and Signal Pest on turn one thanks to Springleaf Drum. Lanthier kept a one land hand but the second was resting on top of his library. Schmidt continued to mount an offense with Etched Champion while Lanthier tried to stem the bleeding with Deceiver Exarch. With a Splinter Twin waiting in his hand, Lanthier just needed to find a fourth land. A second Serum Visions let him place the required mana source on top, and with an Ancient Grudge on Springleaf Drum to turn off Schmidt's only source of colored mana, Blue-Red Twin was able to take home another trophy.

Congratulations to Dan Lanthier, your Grand Prix Vancouver champion!
