Brian Braun-Duin Leaves His Legacy on Grand Prix New Jersey

Reddit

With 4,003 competitors, Grand Prix New Jersey clocked in as the third largest Grand Prix of all time. Day Two, with 446 players, was larger than many of the early Grand Prix. At the end of the second day two well known players remained with a chance to win a trophy in one of Magic's largest formats. Tom Ross was piloting Infect against Brian Braun-Duin and his Jeskai Stoneblade. Both decks featured new additions from Khans of Tarkir, with Treasure Cruise making a four-of appearance in Braun-Duin's deck while one copy joined a singleton Become Immense in Ross' weapon of choice.

The finals were decided in a tense game two where Braun-Duin's Meddling Mage wielding an Umezawa's Jitte made short work of Ross' trio of Inkmoth Nexus. The win gave Braun-Duin his second Grand Prix title (the other being Grand Prix Louisville 2013).

Lam Phan made top 8 with a deck that was more at home in 2004 than 2014. Piloting Blue-Red Standstill, Pham was able to mimic Ancestral Recall in an entirely different fashion.

Joseph Santonassino eschewed colors entirely. Running a deck comprised entirely of artifacts, Santonassino borrowed a page from the Vintage Championships and ran MUD. This deck wants to stop its opponent's from casting spells with Chalice of the Void and Trinisphere to buy the time to power out huge machine-like threats.
