Quandrix Previews Break Brains with Secrets of Strixhaven

Reddit

Secrets of Strixhaven previews have begun anew. Our first few days of previews saw a huge deluge of cards, including the Debut Stream, the reveal of all five Commander decks, and a look at both the Prismari and Lorehold schools.

The second week of previews kicks off going all in on showcasing the Blue and Green Quandrix cards of the set. There's a ton to cover, so let's break out our calculators and get right into it!

Who Are The Quandrix?

The Quandrix are the math centric students of Strixhaven. If there's a math problem to solve, they're the ones doing it and taking it to an extreme. After all, their founder, Quandrix, the Proof, taught them to do so.

This math fuels their magic, leading to some stellar visuals as well as both massive spells and creatures alike. Previously, Quandrix cared about reaching eight lands for bigger effects. This time they care about simply casting bigger spells to make their creatures bigger.

Zimone, the young prodigy of Quandrix, was a major player in the original Strixhaven: School of Mages storyline. Not only did she help save her school, but she would go on to play a big role in the Duskmourn: House of Horror story as well. Here, we see her once again, though she now struggles to adapt in her post-graduate life on Arcavios.

The spell Planar Engineering was shown off as a part of her new side-story that was posted to Wizards' website today. This powerful card acts as a sort of super-Harrow that can trigger Landfall effects multiple times in a single turn. If only there was a deck in Standard right now that could take advantage of such an effect...

Powerful New Spells

Flow State, despite appearing to depict a Prismari student on it, was shown off today via Tobby the Magic Sheep to go along with the Blue cards of the day.

This instantly drew comparisons from many to the powerful Expressive Iteration from the original Strixhaven. That card was banned in Pioneer and Legacy and this one may be just as good, if not better, with the right setup.

Mind into Matter is the first of two cards previewed by CNet and it's a sweet one. It quickly draws comparisons to famous spells like Braingeyser and Stroke of Genius, though at Sorcery speed. The tradeoff for this smaller casting window is that you get to put something big into play from the cards you drew.

That's a card with tons of potential, even if it only makes a big splash in Commander.

Speaking of Commander staples, Echocasting Symposium - the other CNet preview - is sure to be an instant staple for the premiere Casual format.

I've been around long enough to remember how big of a card Progenitor Mimic was and how long it's remained a staple of the format. This continues the Legacy of that card via a spell that's difficult to interact with turn after turn.

If you want a similar one-time effect, look no further than this Japanese spell. While we don't know the name, it's been translated and noted that it makes a token copy of a non-Aura permanent. The difference is that it enters as a 0/0 Fractal Creature and gets six +1/+1 counters on it. Not a bad deal for four mana.

Incremental Growth

The big thing about the Quandrix is they love casting big spells and making their existing stuff bigger. Nothing makes this clearer than the set's new Increment mechanic, which makes Creatures with the ability even bigger if you cast a spell with mana value greater than their power or toughness.

Fractal Tender is a great example of this. Previewed by Limited Resources, this outstanding Creature not only gets bigger while being difficult to deal with, but fills your board with more Creatures in the process. No wonder Limited Resources got to show it off!

The other Increment creature we got to see here is Ambitious Augmenter, previewed by cara_mtg on Instagram.

This creature immediately set off alarm bells from those who remember the power of cards like Voice of Resurgence. It's not hard to power this up fast and then leave your opponents in the dust. Even if they can deal with it, you'll end up with another Creature left behind in its wake, making it a veritable threat for Constructed play.

This Japanese card, titled Adaptive Evolution, was shared by Wizards' Japanese socials. It makes a 0/0 Fractal token with three +1/+1 counters when it enters. Every upkeep you then put a +1/+1 counter on a creature and give it Vigilance, thus fueling your creatures further.

Prepare For Trouble

Today we got a look at two more Prepare cards, both shown off by Magic head designer Mark Rosewater in his regular Making Magic column on DailyMTG.

The first, Harmonized Trio, is another card featuring Prismari on it, though that's fine when it provides you with the opportunity to cast Brainstorm in Standard. This card instantly drew jokes comparing it visually to KPop Demon Hunters but it's no joke that this card seems quite excellent.

The second card brings us the next in the Emeritus cycle of Mythic Rares, presenting us with yet another spell from Alpha on a creature.

Regrowth was at one time banned from Constructed play for getting back plenty of powerful spells that could break the game. These days abilities like this bring back permanents specifically, disallowing you to grab these impactful spells.

Will this new Emeritus of Abundance allow players to break Regrowth once again like it's 1993?

Conclusion

That wraps up today's round of previews. We've still got three more days left of individual previews followed by the complete Card Image Gallery reveal.

This week's WeeklyMTG stream will cover all of the remaining Mystical Archive cards, showcasing some of the most bombastic spells from Magic's history. After that, we get Silverquill and then Witherbloom.
