The Top 5 Best TCG Games to Play in 2026

Reddit

In this day and age, card games are everywhere. Some of them we've been playing for decades, others we may have only just started. Many of our favorite franchises now have card game counterparts that let us enjoy the things we love in new ways. Shiny cardboard can be irresistible after all!

Maybe you're a collector looking to snag all the different printings of your favorite card. Or perhaps you love to bling out your deck with the highest rarity cards. Regardless, your card game of choice should have ways to engage with the cards in ways that fans can appreciate.

With that in mind, I'm here to show you some games that do just that. If you're looking for a new card game or just want to see what's going on with some of the best TCGs to play this year, then look no further.

Best Trading Card Games of 2026

While the list is numbered, they are in no particular order. Also, this is just a small piece of the puzzle for TCGs. There are plenty of awesome TCGs out there that are not on this list. Everything below is a TCGs that are doing well and worth checking out if you haven't yet.

5. Riftbound: League of Legends Trading Card Game

Riftbound, the League of Legends card game, which was released last year, got off to a sizzling hot start and is showing no signs of slowing down. It's not just dedicated fans of the online MOBA who are playing. Fans of the animated series Arcane, K/DA enjoyers, collectors, and TCG players looking for a unique gameplay experience are also joining the fray.

Riftbound players have plenty to look forward to this year and it starts with the 3rd booster set release of Unleashed. Starting with Unleashed, Riot is bringing new mechanics to the game including XP, Hunt, and Ambush that will all give the game more depth and have you feeling more like you're duking it out in Runeterra.

Of course, there are plenty of new Legends and champions to deck-build with in Unleashed. Characters like Vi, Master Yi, and Diana get to show off some of these new mechanics through waiting for just the right moment to conquer territories.

Riftbound receives its first ever Ultimate Rarity card with Baron Nashor in Unleashed. These extremely rare cards are not a part of every set moving forward as they're being saved for special cases. Count yourself lucky if you're able to spot one out in the Rifts.

Vaults are something akin to the Elite Trainer Boxes from the Pokemon Trading Card Game and are also arriving with Unleashed. It's a great product for those who are looking for more bang for your buck than normal blisters, but may not want to spring for a full booster box.

4. Digimon Card Game

As one of Bandai's earlier TCGs, the Digimon Card Game has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent months. With the new anime Digimon Beat Break, the web comic Digimon LIBERATOR that just wrapped up, and the massively successful Digimon Time Stranger video game, more and more players are finding reasons to jump into the physical card game.

New players will find that any of the starter decks in recent years are a great place to start when picking up the game. ST-20 Protector of Light and ST-21 Hero of Hope use Digimon and Tamers from the original anime. ST-18 Guardian Vortex and ST-19 Fable Waltz equip players with the protagonists' decks from Digimon LIBERATOR. Finally, the Amethyst Mandala Advanced Deck offers a competitive deck right out the box.

Now is also a great time to be a new player because of the most recent set AD-01 Advanced Booster Digimon Generations. This set offers reprints of many powerful staple cards in the game as well as plenty of new cards to explore with deck-building. The main focus is on each of the series' protagonists, offering new upgrades to help strengthen their decks. It's a fantastic set for both new players and old.

There's plenty of upcoming things to look forward to as well. In May, a new card type known as "Dual Cards" releases within the next two starter decks and core booster set. Dual Cards act as both Digimon and Option cards, offering more flexibility in gameplay. The continuation of the Time Stranger cards continues in BT-25 Dual Revolution too.

New products are released nearly every month so there's no better time to jump into the Digital World.

3. Pokemon Trading Card Game

It shouldn't come as a surprise to see Pokemon on the list of best TCGs to play. As the world's biggest IP, the game is constantly attracting new players and collectors alike. Pokemon is a collector's paradise, with an ever-growing number of species to collect and new sets to spark attention. Playing the game is inviting too because it's so simple and new player friendly.

This year continues the Pokemon Mega Evolution series that was started last year with Pokemon TCG: Mega Evolution. We've already seen Mega Evolution - Ascended Heroes and Mega Evolution - Perfect Order release this year with all the wonderful new EX cards, Illustration Rare, and Special Illustration Rare cards you could ask for.

Next in the pipeline is Mega Evolution - Chaos Rising which releases in May. For all you Greninja fans, this is the set for you. Don't forget that Mega Evolutions now follow a more standardized evolution mechanic whereas traditionally you needed a specific Pokemon Tool to perform Mega Evolutions.

Lastly, we have the Pokemon 30th Anniversary Set coming later this year. The set will launch at the same time worldwide and have additional products releasing throughout the year. It's a celebration set, so you can be sure it'll be hot off the drop.

2. Yu-Gi-Oh!

Yu-Gi-Oh! has been picking up a lot of steam these past few months and 2026 is looking to be a great year for Duelists. Rarity Collection V marks the first set to release with extended art cards, cards with art that extend beyond the normal borders. These rare cards come in Ultra Rare or Starlight and are great for collecting and playing. There's no doubt these will become the new chase cards moving forward for new sets.

We're also hot off the heels of one of the best sealed products for players looking to jump into competitive action in Legendary Modern Decks. The product gives you three standalone decks packed with powerful staple cards to use in today's format. Sky Striker, Mitsurugi, and X-Saber are the three archetypes included and can all hold their own when piloted well.

Meanwhile, Konami continues to push Genesys format, which debuted last Fall, by officially supporting it at the local and YCS level events. In case you missed it, Genesys is a lower-powered format that uses a point system in deck-building. There're no Link or Pendulum monsters, or the Extra Monster Zone. It's great for those who miss earlier times in Yu-Gi-Oh! but still may want to use their favorite decks.

Genesys players and Advanced format players can both benefit from the upgrade to the tournament packs coming soon. We'll also see improvements to Starlight rares, further Legendary Deck products, and more later this year.

1. Magic: The Gathering

Magic has been one of the best TCGs to play in recent years and 2026 is no different. There's a bit of everything to enjoy, from multiple formats that cater to casual and competitive players, mass appeal due to Universes Beyond collaborations, and rich lore and storylines to follow along. Let's see how 2026 is shaping up for the grandfather of TCGs.

In 2026, Wizards of the Coast is debuting three in-universe sets in Lorwyn Eclipsed, Secrets of Strixhaven, and Reality Fracture later in October. Lorwyn had players return to the land of light and shadow but with the two planes now merged. Strixhaven takes players beyond the five colleges of the university and deeper into other research locations of Arcavios. Meanwhile, Reality Fracture looks to cap off the Metronome Arc.

The next few Universes Beyond sets are stacking up to be bangers. Marvel Superheroes, The Hobbit, and Star Trek are all juggernaut franchises so it's easy for fans to have high expectations. We're all hoping these sets release with as much care and attention to detail as many of last year's sets got like Final Fantasy and Avatar: The Last Airbender. Nothing feels off the table when it comes to Universes Beyond and that's a great feeling.

Conclusion

It's clear that 2026 will be another big year in the trading card game space. We have more reasons than ever to sit down across the table for some games with friends or people at your local card shop. Between all the new sets, mechanics, and product releases, I hope you're able to enjoy your favorite card game the way you like.
