Story and Craft: A Magic: The Gathering Exhibition

Reddit

Today is the day I can finally formally announce the next Magic: The Gathering art show. The working title is:

Story & Craft: A Magic: The Gathering Exhibition

Who?

Myself, with Donny Caltrider and Brian Scott Walters, will be organizing an art, culture, and history exhibition of Magic: The Gathering at the Brooks Stevens Gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. The school, MIAD, is an integral partner in the creation of the exhibition. It is an official event.

What?

The exhibition will examine the creation of the brand, including elements of design, artist commission and creation, play-testing of a game, and art direction. It will feature over 20 pieces of original Magic: The Gathering art, along with process images to show how the art was made from play-testing materials, to video and more.

Where?

It will be located at the campus, in the Brooks Stevens Gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Milwaukee, WI.

How?

The exhibition is free to the public.

When?

November 11, 2019 - January 11, 2020.

Art will have to be shipped in October, returned in late January. Deadline to submit is June 30.

What's next?

A call for art. While I have a few confirmations in the community already, both the gallery director in Milwaukee and myself have a short list of wanted artist works from artists that live in the Midwest, plus Winona Nelson. Here is the list they are looking for:

  • Dan Scott
  • Arnie Swekel

  • Jim Pavelec
  • Tyler Walpole

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Story & Craft: a Magic: The Gathering Exhibition to open at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design

Exhibition Dates: November 11, 2019 - January 11, 2020.

Exhibition Location: Brooks Stevens Gallery, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, Milwaukee, WI

June 5, 2019 - The Magic Art Show team has announced their fourth exhibition of original Magic art, entitled Story & Craft: a Magic: The Gathering Exhibition, which will open after a semester of students projects leading up to the exhibition this fall in Milwaukee, WI. The show will run from November 11th, 2019 - January 11th, 2020.

The exhibition will explore the creation of Wizards of the Coast LLC's brand Magic: The Gathering, a subsidiary of Hasbro. The exhibition is the first of its kind for Magic at a college and will examine the creation of the brand, including elements of design, artist commission and creation, play-testing of a game, and art direction. It will feature over 20 pieces of original Magic: The Gathering art, along with process images to show how the art was made from play-testing materials. Visitors will be able to see how the game's beginnings have grown into an international brand translated into ten languages.

Students will have the opportunity, in select MIAD classes, to participate in projects influenced by commissioned Magic artworks. This includes displaying their creations in the Brooks Stevens Gallery, to hosting Magic artists, like MIAD alumnus Jeff Miracola, to live evening cosplay drawing sessions to hone skills of complicated character designs. By using a lens of a major international brand, students will gain perspective of a growing industry, and build the skills to prepare them for working within that industry, while also creating an exhibition open to the citizens of Milwaukee.

Story & Craft: a Magic: The Gathering Exhibition at Brooks Stevens Gallery will be open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m starting November 11. Admission to the galleries will be free.
