Hello all and happiest of days to each of you! I hope your day finds you as well as possible. Today I am writing up a fun Jeskai Sokka and Suki brew to see if I can build it in my next Budget Commander brew. As a reminder, these tend to be in the $31.20 or so budget and then adding in a pricey leader we are starting with should really push my budget since they cost $4.49 near mint now here.
They are a cheap on-curve 3/3 body on three-mana, easy for recasting and then when they or other Allies arrive, we can make a free attach of our Equipment! Then when an Equipment arrives it brings a free Ally token for the free equipping too, neither of those are limited at once per turn too.
Now let's get started with fleshing this out!
Mana, Lands, Ramp
$4.49:
- 1 Sokka and Suki
$.75
- 1 Razortide Bridge
<$.50
- 1 Axgard Armory
- 1 Command Tower
- 1 Prairie Stream
- 1 Rogue's Passage
- 1 Secluded Starforge
- 1 Navigation Orb
- 1 Rustvale Bridge
- 1 Stonespeaker Crystal
- 1 All-Fates Scroll
- 1 Burnished Hart
- 1 Commander's Sphere
- 1 Evolving Wilds
- 1 Jeskai Banner
- 1 Mind Stone
- 1 Mystic Monastery
- 1 Path of Ancestry
- 1 Perilous Landscape
- 1 Starting Column
- 1 Terramorphic Expanse
- 1 Wild-Field Scarecrow
- 1 Scuttlemutt
- 1 Boros Cluestone
Total Cost So Far - $11.96
Secluded Starforge and Axgard Armory will get us started. The colorless one taps with five to make a 2/2 Robot! And then with two at sorcery speed to pump one dork's size by how many we tap! Since Equipment doesn't tap to use, they'll be able carve up someone, and then the ETB tapped uncommon taps for White, and then sacs with Boros mana to Tutor our brew for an Aura or Equipment to our hand.
Next up are these two fun things, I like the ETB tapped indestructible Boros tapping artifact land, but the third wasn't able to be here with cost. Then the fetching or cycling Jeskai colored one that also taps for mana too is nice for twice and here. I also tossed in Wilds and Expanse too.
Next up are artifact style things, and I'd love to add in Academy Ruins. Buried Ruin taps and sacs with two for Regrowthing an artifact to our hand. Then I tossed in tons of artifacts too sac like Sphere, Mind Stone and All-Fates Scroll too. We can tap and sac it for seven for one card drawn per different named land we got.
For mana ramp, I started with three-drops Burnished Hart and Wild-Field Scarecrow. And next up are two Baldur's Gate set stuff! Navigation Orb taps and sacs with two to Cultivate lands that can be Gates too. The Guildgates could be added for around 29 cents per. We could add them very cheaply and still not be in a bad place. Then the four-drop uncommon Stonespeaker Crystal taps for two and then with two too to sac and draw and exile opposing graveyards too.
The three-drop artifact dork Scuttlemutt taps for any color of mana and then with no mana to change colors around and was the first Manalith 2/2 on legs. Then the classic winccon in land form Rogue's Passage had to be here to make our dork unblockable for four tapped mana to win with my Commander and damage or elsewhere too.
Answers
Next up are my many answers to things to answer problems. In most of my articles this comes after themes and synergies and win-cons, but I always do them next, so here we'll do that.
0.99
- 1 Assimilation Aegis
<$.50
- 1 Hour of Reckoning
- 1 Abrade
- 1 Cancel
- 1 Citizen's Crowbar
- 1 Dismiss
- 1 Dissipate
- 1 Meteor Golem
- 1 Meteor Sword
- 1 Negate
- 1 Tuktuk Scrapper
- 1 Deconstruction Hammer
Let's start with answers to stuff with pinpoint answers here. That seven-drop uncommon Equipment arrives and Desert Twisters anything on arrival! You can equip for three for a nice-sized +3/+3 dork, and then that also costed seven-cost 3/3 dork above do the same. Argentum Armor used to be here but isn't that cheap anymore.
The uncommon Citizen's Crowbar costs two up front, comes with a 1/1 Citizen dork and attaches for free. Then it gets +1/+1 in size taps for one to sac the Crowbar and Disenchant. Then the latter one-drop common Equipment Deconstruction Hammer arrives with a cheap one mana equip and a +1/+1 like Short Sword! Then you can tap this for three and sac it to Disenchant a thang. Because the first bring a dork it's nice and taps for one, but the latter is very cheap on-curve too.
Now let's turn to these fun thangs. The three-drop mythic Azorius one arrives and exiles something fun until this leaves like an Oblivion Ring. Just dorks though. This equips for two and then our dork becomes the exiled thang's copy - not bad, right? Then the four-drop Ally ETBs and can destroy an artifact. Then other Allies can do so too! Then the destroyed stuff's player eats damage equal to our Ally count, Ouchie I know, just do that a few times and they'll pull stuff off the battlefield until this is answered.
Card Draw
Who wants to draw?!?!?! Here we do them last in my brews and articles, but in order to make sure we can draw and refill our hand.
$0.75
- 1 South Pole Voyager
<$.50
- 1 Biorganic Carapace
- 1 Katara, Bending Prodigy
- 1 Mask of Memory
- 1 Rogue's Gloves
- 1 Sokka, Bold Boomeranger
- 1 Stone Haven Outfitter
- 1 The Mechanist, Aerial Artisan
- 1 Jet, Freedom Fighter
- 1 Sokka, Lateral Strategist
- 1 Stoneforge Acolyte
- 1 Tidings
- 1 Gran-Gran
Total - $20.96
We also have a rare or mythic Azorius costed Equipment like before, this four-drop one equips for two and auto equips on arrival! It gets a nice size boost of +2/+02 and then when it smashes damage we''ll draw for each modified dork we have! That could easily refill our hand with counters and Equipment auto-equipping as they arrive on tokens too. Then that Bear Rare White Ally has them all arrive with a life gain, or a card drawn in the second time it happens.
Next up are a fun trio of Azorius Allies that draw in various ways. That two-drop White rare Bear Stone Haven Outfitter pumps our equipped critters by +1/+1 and then as they die you'll draw to replace them. Then that three-drop vigilance Sokka, Lateral Strategist with a decent 2/4 size is next. When he and another dork attack? Draw! Not bad and not an Ally here either. Then that mono-Blue three-drop The Mechanist, Aerial Artisan is next. When we cast noncreatures here we'll make a Clue! We can tap for the Starforge too, or cards. Then tap it for no mana to make an artifact token a 3/1 flyer Construct.
Last are these two cheap dorks. The two-drop Izzet colored 1/1 legendary lad arrives and can discard up to two cards, and then draw them like rummaging. Then as we cast artifacts or Lessons toss a counter here for perma-growth. Then that one-drop 1/2 Kor arrives with the ability to tap themselves and another Ally to dig four and draw an Equipment. Nasty here!
Synergies and Win-Cons
And now here is where we win the game plus synergies too.
$1.79
- 1 Colossus Hammer
- 1 Puresteel Paladin
$.69
- 1 Wrecking Ball Arm
- 1 Sokka, Tenacious Tactician
<$.50
- 1 Hakoda, Selfless Commander
- 1 Horn of Valhalla // Ysgard's Call
- 1 Invoke Justice
- 1 Munda's Vanguard
- 1 Suki, Courageous Rescuer
- 1 Wartime Protestors
- 1 Wake the Past
- 1 Trusty Boomerang
I saved space for Hammer and the latter one which needed to be here, and are pricier here than other sites. This one-drop arrives and then equips for eight normally and drops flying but gets a nasty +10/10 game winning size. Then that two-drop legendary Equipment equips them for three or others for seven, and increases their base size to 7/7, and cannot be chumped blocked. Just drop them after our Commander to free equip.
The three-drop version of our leading lady on a 2/4 legendary body is Suki, Courageous Rescuer, which pumps our team's front by one. Then when another of our permanents leave play, we can make a free 1/1 Ally but just once per turn, to trigger our stuff! Then that one-drop uncommon one-equip Equipment Trusty Boomerang can trigger her or our Commander by giving what it equips the ability to tap for one mana to self-bounce the Equipment to trigger Suki and then recast too. I wish I could afford Sram.
That two-drop metalcrafting with free equips is next and is pretty pricey here but not elsewhere. That's great as a backup leader or for later too, and you'll draw too as Equipment arrive, another combo with the Boomerang above. Then that four-drop Jeskai version 3/3 size legendary take on our leader is here with menace and prowess. He'll also give them both to our Allies and then as we cast noncreatures make an 1/1 Ally too! Love him here.
That four-drop 4/4 haste Red Rebel Ally Wartime Protestors will turn other Allies that arrive with haste and a counter on them too for a fast win-con. Yay! Horn of Valhalla is next with a spell to make 1/1 Soldiers for XWW and then a two-drop three Equipment that pumps them in size equips to our creature count. Nasty here I know!
Would you like some recursion other than Buried Ruin? Sure! Wake the Past is ideal at returning all of our artifacts back, and then they arrive with haste too. We could toss in Triumphant Reckoning for 75 cents but out with cost. And then Invoke Justice can return one of anything from dorks to lands and then tosses a quarter of counters on our stuff.
Now let's finish with these two Ally enabler rare White dorks. The five-drop 3/3 smaller one can tap himself and one for no mana to grow the entire team with a counter! Note that's not just Allies either. Then that four-drop legendary Ally 3/5 vigilance one can cast them from the top of our library as a Future Sight, and then can sac for no mana to give all of our dorks (again, not just Allies) a big toughness boost and indestructible too.
We have 15 slots left and then are at 29.11 with 2.09 left.
And now time to finish this brew!
The Final Cut
<$.50
- 1 Bonehoard
- 1 Katara, Water Tribe's Hope
- 1 Blade of Shared Souls
- 1 Master Piandao
- 1 Aang's Journey
- 1 Barbed Spike
- 1 Bladehold War-Whip
- 1 Boots of Speed
- 1 Brass Knuckles
- 1 Forebear's Blade
- 1 Glider Staff
- 1 Kyoshi Battle Fan
- 1 Shimmer Myr
- 1 Concentrate
- 1 Ancestral Blade
Total - 33.72
That puts me two dollars and 23 cents more than my budget, so I call it there.
I forgot to add a flash engine for my artifacts; enter Shimmer Myr. Then I added some two-drops that arrive with a dork attached. Kyoshi Battle Fan makes an 1/1 Ally and then a +1 power and equips for two, and then Ancestral Blade arrives with 1/1 a Soldier and +1/+1 size here for just one mana.
And then these three thangs are next. That five-drop 4/4 first strike uncommon legendary Ally has an attack trigger to draw an Ally, Lesson or Equipment from the top four of our library. Then the three-drop Blue Equipment has a 2/2 dork it arrives equipped and then that's a copy of another of our dorks. Everyone loves Clones! It equips for two. Then those four-cost Equipment arrives with two and then equips with one mana and as long as two are there we can double strike them.
Bonehoard arrives as living weapon and then has everyone's graveyard creature count added in size or boost is equipped for two! Then that Azorius five-drop legendary Katara, Water Tribe's Hope that makes one on arrival is next and waterbends X to pump our team to that spent. Then don't forget about Forebear's Blade, that gives +3/+0 and gives vigilance and trample and then when it dies, we can free equip it to another dork of ours!
Actually, I found a 15-cent version of Rogue's Gloves called Goggles of Night to swap in. They also scry first. It drops me to 33.38.

We could add in tons like the Guildgates, or Two-Handed Axe, Distant Melody, Jasmine Dragon Tea Shop, Triumphant Reckoning, Voyage Home, Sword of Vengeance, and Aetherize, Civic Saber and tons more, each at or under a buck and some very cheap too, and then all of the Treasure-making Equipment too are cheap but I wanted other stuff. The other Bridge too. That would be probably another 8 or 10 bucks or so. If you have Academy Ruins that's the big one, and it costs 7.169 for the cheapest version, combine them and that should be around 50 dollars. Nim Deathmantle is 4 bucks and White Lotus Tile for tons of mana at 6.30 are great here too. Skullclamp for 7 dollars a good addition too. Sokka, Swordmaster is sold out here but 4 bucks elsewhere. I hope you enjoy this Budget Commander Brew!
