Budget Commander #75: Naya Morph Matters with Kaust

Reddit

Hello awesome Budget Commander fans! I hope that your day is going super mega well! Today I am going to knock out my 75th Budget Commander deck. This series started with the idea of actual, proper, budgets not those in the triple digits. The first deck came in at $37.71. Then I have wanted to come in under that budget ever since, and last time in December, I was at $32.13. I built my first Group Slug brew. You can find the Appendix below.

Today, with the heavy leaning on Morph Matters with disguise in the latest set, I wanted to knock out my first guy. I was looking at both Yarus, Roar of the Old Gods in Gruul and Naya's Kaust, Eyes of the Glade. Both are under a buck! I preferred Yarus in the Command Zone but in a budget brew, maximizing your color options is awesome. So, I am running the 99-cent Kaust.

Kaust, Eyes of the Glade

Here's my Commander! This two-drop three color with hybrid 2/2 can be dropped every second turn without ramp. Then when you dealt damage from a dork that was turned face up, draw that card. There are no limits on that. Then you can tap him for no mana to flip up an (attacking only) face down dork to draw that card. There are no other cards here. Now let's turn to the meat of the article, and as a reminder, when prices are cited here, those may shift from the writing to the editing to the publication to when you read it. But the key point remains.

Mana, Ramp, Lands, and Rocks

Let's start with the best ramping Green stuff. Nervous Gardener can get a dual land or Cave - pretty strong in any three-color brew like this one! Trail of Mystery costs two as well, when your face-down stuff ETBs you search for a basic for your hand and then no ramp there either. Then when you flip something, it gets +2/+2 for the turn, so that's a big combat trick when timed well.

Stonespeaker Crystal
Bonder's Ornament
Branch of Vitu-Ghazi

Now let's turn to mana rocks and lands. The Crystal costs four, taps for two, can be tapped with two sacrifice and draw one and exile all opposing graveyards! The Ornament costs three, taps for any color, and then you can tap it with four mana to draw and each player who controls it also draws that card. Those both are cheap. The land taps for colorless and then can be dropped with disguise and then turned up for three generic mana and then you make two free mana when you flip it. I am also running land morph Zoetic Cavern!

Now let's turn to more lands! Kessig Wolf Run taps for colorless, taps with X mana to grow a dork by that mana spent in power and then gives it trample as well as a useful mana sink and win con. Access Tunnel taps with three to give a small dork you control unblockage. Nasty! I am also running win-con land Rogue's Passage as well. Love this win-con trio loads!

I adore Exotic Orchard in many of my budget brews and elsewhere since it's bulk-rare cheap and then you can make any mana your foe's can. I love this since you will often gain control of opposing stuff or Clone it and you want to ensure you have that mana. Tomb of the Spirit Dragon taps with two to gain life equal to your colorless dork count, so that's a lot of recursive life gain there to keep your rock rollin'.

Total coming out of ramp and lands and rocks and such with my commander is $8.93.

Answers

Boltbender
Join Shields
Lorehold Command

Next let's turn to answers, which is often my last one, but I need interaction! Let's start with answers to answers, which are often pricey in Naya like Heroic Intervention, Boros Charm and Teferi's Protection. Enter this trio! The creature has disguise, flips for two, and redirects any abilities or spells from your stuff to opposing stuff. I am also running disguise answer Essence of Antiquity to give your stuff hexproof. The Selesnya instant gives your stuff indestructible, hexproof and untapped for a surprise block out of nowhere. The Boros colored Command costs five, you can give your dorks indestructible, haste, and a power boost, or make a 3/2 dork or Lightning Helix something or sac one to draw two cards. Those are all strong options here!

Now let's turn to morph-based removal. Ainok Survivalist has megamorph for two, and when it's flipped you get a free Naturalize. Then I have two more of those here. Hidden Dragonslayer has megamorph too, this time for three, and when it flips up, you destroy a big dork - pretty likely in Commander mid- or late game. Temur War Shaman costs six for a 4/5 that manifests your top library's card when it ETBs, so that's 6/7 on arrival. Then when a dork is flipped up you get a free fight for recursive removal, and it's got "may" language so you don't have to worry about it when you don't have options.

Austere Command
Mizzium Mortars

Every deck needs emergency mass removal, and we have these two. The mono-White Command costs six, you can destroy two options - enchantments, artifacts, cheap stuff or pricey stuff. You use this to best sculpt your battlefield. The overload sorcery also costs six for that, and will shoot each opposing dork for four damage each to kill many things! Love this removal pair loads!

At the end of the Answers section, I have spent 14.51 of my budget. Next is card draw, which we need to ensure we can draw the goodies!

Card Draw

True Identity
Lifecrafter's Bestiary

Now let's turn to card draw since this usually waits until the end, but I want to ensure we are drawing those cards! The White enchantment costs two with disguise. When it or another thing flips, you scry 1 and then draw. But just once/turn. Then the Green colored artifact is next with a three cost. You get a free scry 1 in your upkeep. When you cast that dork, spend Green to draw. Both are brilliant card flow over time!

When Hystrodon smashes face, you draw that precious card! It's the Thieving Magpie of morph since it has evasion. Mentor of the Meek costs three, has a 2/2 Grey Ogre, and then when another small-powered dork arrives, you can swap 1 mana for a card. Nasty! Love this card flow pair loads!

Duskana, the Rage Mother
Fugitive Codebreaker

Let's turn to Red card flow options! The Naya colored legendary dork costs five for an on-curve 5/5 beater. When she ETBs, you draw equal to your 2/2 dork count! Nasty! Then when your 2/2s swing, they'll grow to 5/5s for the turn! Nastier! The mono-red one costs two base, for a prowess hasted 2/1 which is pretty good right there. Or you can disguise it and reveal for not more than 6 mana and then discard your hand and draw three. Great late game when you are topdecking or early game on the second turn for pressure.

After card draw we are at 19.40! Next is the biggest part of this deck!

Synergies and Winning Conditions, First Run

Yedora, Grave Gardener
Den Protector

Now let's turn to my first run of Synergies and Winning Conditions! We'll start with recursion! The legendary one above costs five for an on-curve 5/5 beater. When your stuff dies? Return it face down as a Forest instead! Then you can flip it back over with your three abilities! Then the non-legendary one has megamorph for two, and then nothing smaller in power can block it. When turned face up, it's a free Regrowth. I am also running recursive dork Deathmist Raptor.

Panoptic Projektor costs four, taps to drop a face down dork for free. Then when you flip up and trigger an ability once, you can do so again, so this is a reverse Panharmonicon for flips. Note colorless so you can always drop it turn 4 no matter what colors of mana you have! Printlifter Ooze costs two for a Bear with deathtouch. Then it has disguise for four mana, and that alone is awesome as morphs with deathtouch can trade out of nowhere. Then when it or another dork flips up, you make an X/X sized Ooze equal to your dork count, and that will grow fast and fat. It's a broken alternate win-con here.

Now let's turn to two red zone bigger beaters to morph up and win with. The classic is Exalted Angel which dominated Standard when released, and morphs up into a 4/5 lifelink flyer for four mana, so drop her turn three, swing and morph turn four, have an eight life swing. Akroma, Angel of Fury cannot be countered, has a strong 6/6 flying body with trample and two protections and fire breathing. Or you can morph her up for just six mana and smash two turns earlier, or drop her turn 3 like the White one, and then tap your Commander to flip her up and smash on turn 4. Nasty pair!

Now let's turn to Selesnya stuff. Salt Road Ambushers has megamorph for five and then when your other stuff flips up, you toss a pair of +1/+1 counters on it to grow into beaters fast! Mastery of the Unseen also costs two, when your face down stuff is turned up you gain life equal to your dork count - that's a lot here, and then you can spend four mana to manifest the top card of your library!

Pyrotechnic Performer
Master of Pearls

Let's finish with this Boros colored two-drop base duo! The Assassin disguises for one red mana. When it or another dork flips up, you shoot each foe equal to its power - a backup non-red zone win con here! The Monk morphs for five and pumps the team by +2/+2 for a backup win-con or combat trick. Good stuff to end this section with!

Alright, I have 51 cards done and my current budget is 27.16, so for the last 10ish cards I have left 4.97, so around 49 cents per card.

Fun Morphs and Morph Caring Cards

Cybership
Lightform

Now let's knock out the last 10 cards or so! The Vehicle costs six, has a nasty 8/8 flying body. It crews for 4, which is two morphs. Then when it smashes face, you get two free facedown Cyberman of the 2/2 persuasion from your foe's library. The enchantment costs three, manifests your library for a card and it gains flying and lifelink after this turns into an aura. I am also running the double strike giving one in Red called Rageform.

Scroll of Fate costs three, taps to manifest a card from your hand for free. That's nasty synergy here! Hide in Plain Sight costs four, you dig five and cloak two and the rest head to your library 's bottom randomly. Nasty duo there!

Showstopping Surprise
Whisperwood Elemental

Let's finish with this Gruul duo! The instant costs five. You turn up a face down critter and then deal damage equal to its power to every other dork, so it's an instant speed mass removal spell. The dork costs five as well for a 4/4 dork that manifests in your end step each turn. Then you can sac it to make your face up stuff die into manifests. Love this synergy here loads!!!

With a full 61 cards I am at 29.18 out of 32.13. That leaves me 2.95. So that's a few dollars under. What could I add? How about some fun lands?

Most morph stuff is pretty cheap so there aren't any great cards I'd add in the morph genre. You could add in Skullclamp or Toski, Bearer of Secrets to draw those cards or the aforementioned Heroic Intervention and Teferi's Protection for Rootkin Defenses and Join Shields. Maybe you could toss in Delney from last week's Commander brew. That's pretty much it though, this is a self-contained brew that runs all of the good morph stuff.
