Top Ten Underappreciated Planeswalkers for Commander

Reddit

Hello happy folks, I hope this article finds you doing incredibly well! Today I am knocking down my Top Ten Planeswalkers for all kitchen table play that don't get much play today but should. That means in multiplayer, Commander, Highlander, Type Four, Five Color, Peasant if they are uncommon too. None of these hit high on other folks' lists. Things like Elspeth, Sun's Champion or Oko aren't hitting.

Let's do it to it!

Honorable Mention #1. (#15 Overall) - Venser, the Sojourner

Venser, the Sojourner

At 1.45% this isn't played much. This five-cost Azorius three loyalty on arrival with a +2 to blink any of your stuff from planeswalkers to reset them to getting another ETB trigger of that Mulldrifter or Karmic Guide! Then you can -1 him to give your team unblockable for the turn, love that with Commanders in his color that have combat damage triggers like Brago or many others, and then you can get either based on what you need at the time, blink or win-con, for 5 Color 20 life or Commander damage in that format! Get him and love him!

Honorable Mention #2. (#14. Overall) - Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim

Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim

At less than 1.5% is this thing. This mono-Blue also five-drop one with four loyalty but gains it as you draw that card - very powerful in all of the good stuff. Then you can 0 him to draw, and then -2 him to make a dork with vigilance and 2/2 size and then as you draw toss a +1/+1 counter on it! Nasty great synergy there making a vigilance win-con and draw machine.

Honorable Mention #3. (#13. Overall) - Kaito, Bane of Nightmares

Kaito, Bane of Nightmares

At 1.58% play is this four-drop Dimir four loyalty with Ninjutsu three-cost and then when he's got loyalty on our turn he's a hexproof 3/4 Ninja! Then you can +1 him to pump all Ninjas by one permanently by an unanswerable emblem! On a +? Then you can 0 him and then surveil and then draw equal to each foe deal damage this turn! Brilliant! Then you can -2 him to tap a dork to swing past it for a few turns with two stun counters. Great early on a small board or later on nasty Commander to tap down.

Honorable Mention #4. (#12. Overall) - Jared Carthalion

Jared Carthalion

At 1.47% too is this five-color planeswalker five-cost with five loyalty that can +1 to make an all colors Kavu of the 3/3 size and then can -3 to toss up to five +1/+1 counters on up to two dorks equal to their color count, and he can be your Commander too! Love him in the Five Color format too.

Honorable Mention #5. (#11. Overall) - Vivien, Champion of the Wilds

Vivien, Champion of the Wilds

This final one before our Top Ten proper is at 1.45%! This three-mana lady with four loyalty can cast your stuff with flash if they are the crucial creature type! Then you can +1 her to make up to one dork vigilance and reach for a round of turns great with Commanders or one Type Four beater with its infinite mana but one spell per turn. Then you can -2 her twice with her starting loyalty to dig three, exile a dork and then cast it - card flow - and it's flashing out too! Love her so much...why aren't you running her because just one block from a dork that swung at you that was flashed out and then killed? They won't attack you again! Wowzer Bowzer!

#10. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

This is at 1.32%?!?!?! How? That's shocking! This eight-drop colorless seven loyalty can +2 on arrival to Bolt any target! From players to dorks or killing off planeswalkers! Then you can -X him to exile all stuff with colors of that cost or less! He's a removal king, both sweeping with mass stuff or targeted and then player kill too after! Then that's exiling rough to come back from too. Love this fatter guy, but with him being an ultimate answer and then in any color? Why aren't you running this bigger guy more? No clue here or there across the land!

#9. Chandra, Awakened Inferno

Chandra, Awakened Inferno

This uncounterable win-con is at just 1.29%! With six loyalty for six-mana too, and you can +2 her to give all foes an unanswerable emblem for +2 loyalty and then they get tinged each upkeep - slow but inevitable kill! Then you can -3 her to shoot each non-Elemental for 3 damage or -X to Disintegrate something! Great stuff for the win and removal tough!

#8. Dack Fayden

Dack Fayden

This three-cost Izzet planeswalker was designed for multiplayer play and yet just has 1.22% play...why? You can +1 him to Loot two cards, and then -2 to steal an artifact, like a Mana Rock that everyone plays, and not for the turn or until he bites it, but forever! So...again...tell me why you aren't running this card flow and artifact stealing powerhouse? I'm not sure, are you?

#7. Chandra Hope's Beacon

Chandra, Hope's Beacon

This amazingly awesome six-drop with four abilities and five loyalty is at 1.13%! Really? Why? The static alone to copy a spell once/turn is worth it! Fact or Fiction to Swords to Plowshares to X Spell burn targeted at our foe! Then you can +2 her to make two mana in any color with no restrictions for how it's used! Then you can +1 her to exile the top five and then cast an instant or sorcery from them. Card flow! Then you can -X her to double Blaze two targets. Let's be honest, did you forget she existed? You did, right?

#6. Vraska, Relic Seeker

Vraska, Relic Seeker

This amazingly awesome, lady in Golgari colors six-drop too also has more loyalty at 6. She's in 1.11% of decks though. Her +2 can make a sizeable 2/2 menacing evasive Pirate. Then you can destroy most of what you want with that sweet -3 and then make a Treasure for ramping too. Great stuff in all of the places!

#5. Sorin Markov

Sorin Markov

Barely at 1% at 1.01? Come-on Commander fans! Your format...alone...should make this heavily played. He costs a rough triple Black on six-mana, but can +2 to Shock a target and then gain its life too. Great later to keep up after your life starts to dip. He's here for that -3 to reduce someone's life to 10! Commander from 40 life made him a classic there. You could easily finish someone. Great answer to infinite life brews in 20 life formats like Five Color too to drop them down and then get their smash on. Love it! You will too. We are now leaving the Top 100 planeswalkers, shocking I know when you see them!

#4. Ob Nixilis Reignited

Ob Nixilis Reignited

Not even in the Top 100 and not at 1%? This five-drop with five-loyalty in Black is next! You can +1 him to draw and lose a life or -3 him to Murder too if needed. Love that all up and down the block. You should be running it more!

#3. The Wandering Emperor

The Wandering Emperor

Barely at three-quarters of a percent? This flashing four-cost three loyalty can use its abilities once on the foe's turn as a combat trick to +1 her and then give your blocker a +1/+1 counter and then first strike, or a -1 to make a chump blocking 2/2 with vigilance Samurai or -2 her to exile a tapped dork and gain two life too. Amazing in defense, she can play tons of roles.

#2. Teyo, Geometric Tactician

Teyo, Geometric Tactician

.85%?? This was made for multiplayer! This three-drop three-loyalty planeswalker White one arrives with a 0/4 flying Wall that's got defender to protect him and your friends and you too for a good long while! Then you can +1 him to have you and another each draw that sweet sweet card! Or you can -2 him to force everyone, you too, to attack either left or right for a round of turns. He's great for political, Group Hug, Pillow Fort, Defender, Toughness, Planeswalker to make a flying blocker and more! He's worth that playing all up and down the block.

#1. Liliana Vess

Liliana Vess

Not in the Top 100 at all and not even 1% Also at 0.85%...shocking. For multiplayer, she was the best of the first five in Lorwyn by bunches! Only Garruk Wildspeaker beat her in for formats like Standard and such. This five-cost five loyalty lady can +1 to force someone to discard - that's brilliant when it's on a +1 since your foes will start casting their stuff the moment you start using her. Then you can -2 her twice and survive to Imperial Seal any card to your library top, but no loss of life. That's great to get two halves of a combo or just the right answer to a problem or a win-con like Craterhoof Behemoth. She's great in discard, midrange, combo, any Highlander format to get your best card, and then loads more. Get her, run her, break her, make your foe's respect the original Liliana once more!
